[MBZ] plastic oil sucker
About 6 months ago, someone posted info on a big plastic oil sucker, similar to the top-sider, but all plastic. It was fairly expensive, IIRC. I think someone had been involved in a group purchase. I can't locate the posting. Can someone list the brand name, etc.? I want this for my boat diesel--I don't like carrying the metal-topsider around and think the plastic will work better. I was just looking at the specs for some new small marine diesels, from Yanmar. I noticed that they list two different horsepower ratings for different fuel temperature. For example, the engine I was looking at produces 20 HP with the fuel temp at 25 centigrade and 22 HP with the fuel temp at 40 centigrade. RPM etc are all equal. This is listed as temperature at the inlet of the fuel injection pump. That's a 10% increase in horsepower! Curt-- You probably have a block heater--just not the cord. Check on the passenger side of the engine--about where the block heater is on a 240D. I did notice this morning at 20F that the 190D started easier than the 240D, I barely turned the key and it was running, not that the 240D started hard but the 190D just seemed easier. [MBZ] Thanks and an OT insurance question
I also say Thanks to everyone on the list. And I have an insurance question (boat not car). I've never made an insurance claim in my life. But my sailboat (in storage at a boatyard for the winter) blew over in a windstorm 10 days ago and sustained considerable damage. My insurance company and the boatyard's insurance are currently arguing over who's responsible. I'm expecting to get an offer from one of them for damages. I'm pretty sure it won't be totalled. I'm estimating that the damage will cost about $15K to fix and the boat is worth maybe $25K to $30K. My feeling is that I would prefer NOT to repair it, since I probably wouldn't trust the boat in harsh conditions and we've been thinking of changing boats anyway. So, what kind of offer am I likely to get? What are my options when I do get the offer. Any suggestions would be appreciated, as I don't want to walk into this deal blind. Thanks again, Ron Dwelle

When I changed the one on my 190D, I had to go to a rent-all place and rent a socket that would fit. It was a big mother--can't remember the size though. I am not sure I have a wrench that will fit it. It looks like it is 1 1/2 to 1 3/4, and a 3/4 inc drive socket that big won't fit in there, above the differential. My 12 adjustable won't go that big. It looks like a job for an offset box wrench, but I don't have one that big. Hm. I will go out and try what i have, but it looks like i may need to buy or build a wrench of some form. Loren

Re: [MBZ] W124 charging system fails, how far can you drive, lots....
That's not quite right. You probably have 50-60 hours of life at 1 amp. When the battery gets much over 50% discharged, it probably won't have enough juice to run the starter, and the lights will be noticeably dim. The radio will probably run a lot longer, but not much else. Re: [MBZ] battery chargers
LTD-- I think the correct answer is, it depends on the charger. The problem with leaving a cheap charger on--if it keeps pumping juice into the battery--is that the battery will continue to gas or boil. Over time, the electrolyte level will lower eventually dry out and destroy the battery. Overnight, the amount is probably not significant. You might want to check and top up the electrolyte level a little more regularly, if you leave the charger on a lot (assuming it's not a sealed battery. The other thing that happens, again depending on the charger, is that the battery will sulfate a little faster. You can de-sulfate a battery by driving a very tiny current through the battery at a very high voltage (16 volts or so), but the lower voltages of a cheap charger will just cook the sulfate onto the plates. You need a charger capable of equalizing the battery to avoid this problem. The Trojan battery site, www.trojan-battery.com, has a good explanation. I'm not so sure that the Battery Tender is a lot better than other cheap chargers. Ron Dwelle On Nov 15, 2005, at 10:35 PM, LT Don wrote: Yes, I know the correct answer is Battery Tender -- it is on my Christmas wish list. But here is my question. Is there any significant damage done by leaving a normal battery charger on overnight, where it might get to zero amps but stay attached for a few hours? This is not a fancy battery charger that shuts off or kicks into trickle mode or such. I did leave it on overnight routinely last winter with no apparent damage, but am curious about the long term impact of doing this. We're talking in my case one of the Interstate Battery mega-mothers under the hood, not a cheap off-brand battery. [MBZ] oil money
A good story on the obscene profits being taken on fuel right now, in the Wall Street Journal: The Wall Street Journal, Russell Gold, 25 Oct 2005 (access ain't free) . The five largest are expected to reap a record $28 billion in collective earnings this quarter, and all signs point to a lucrative six months to come, but they can't brag about it -- at least not publicly. If they did, people might ask inconvenient questions, like: Why are we making you rich by paying so much for gasoline right now? Or: Why is an industry at the peak of profitability getting gajillions in handouts from Congress? To avoid this kind of unpleasantness, according to the story, firms may accentuate the negative in their upcoming financial statements, loading up on special charges like hurricane-related repairs and possible marketing losses, although higher prices for oil and gas are expected to more than make up for the costs of fixing damaged Gulf Coast oil and natural-gas infrastructure. Re: [MBZ] Studded snows
Everyone in Michigan thinks studs are great, but that's probably because they are illegal. Not sure what happens if you get caught driving through the state with them on your car. I've found my HakkaQs on the 240 and the Nokian NRWs on the 190D are adequate for anything I've seen here, without studs. Ron Dwelle On Oct 4, 2005, at 8:41 AM, ned kleinhenz wrote: What is your experience with snow tires? In planning for this winter, I notice Nokian seems to offer more serious options in studded tires. The studs actually decrease traction on wet and dry pavement above feezing temps. 4. In many states you are required to limit the use of studs to a few months of the year. So, unless you drive on ice a lot, studs are probably disadventageous. Are my assumptions correct? [MBZ] SRS brake fluid change
My new 190DT has SRS brakes. I've changed fluid in earlier Benzes (without SRS) with a pressure bleeder. Is the procedure different with SRS? Anything special that needs to be done? Can someone point me to the cd-rom section (PDF file). (I use a Mac and can't use the index on the cd-rom.) Thanks for suggestions. Ron Dwelle
[MBZ] fuel prices jacked
Here in Grand Rapids, diesel fuel went up $0.35/gallon in one day. Prices at all stations is $3.19/gallon, except the nearby Amoco. They're usually $0.10 to $0.20/gallon higher, but they haven't yet changed their price from $2.99/gallon. This is the first time I've seen such a huge jump in prices in a single day--and at all stations simultaneously. Can you say collusion??? Ron Dwelle
Re: [MBZ] here we go again
I called around town the other day to check on fuel prices. Every station I talked to said, Sorry, we cannot give out prices over the phone. I asked a couple of them why not, and they didn't know--just said it was the rule. Don't know if this is universal or just a recent development locally. [MBZ] 201 ball joint
I've got a bad ball joint on my 190D euro. I think that RRing it, along with the alignment, is beyond my capabilities. My good local indy wants $270, using MB parts. The local mcparts shop wants half that, using NAPA parts. Is the MBparts alignment worth twice the mcparts? Thanks, Ron Dwelle

I just filled up with B20 locally--price was $0.19/gallon less that petro diesel. This was at the local (Michigan) Crystal Flash station, about the only place I can get biodiesel in Grand Rapids. Ron Dwelle
[MBZ] 201 CD manual Cruise?

Re: [MBZ] 201 CD manual Cruise?
Thanks, Marshall. As I feared, this requires removing the steering wheel. I'm a bit hesitant to do that, considering that there's an air bag there. Has anyone done the airbag? Is it a project not for the middlin' do-it-yourselfer? Any advice on handling the airbag? Or should I just take it to the local stealer? Thanks, OK Don. Apparently the seller is full of sh*t. I asked him at least twice if he was sure it was a 4 cylinder, if he was sure it was an 86, if he was sure it was the original engine. Re: [MBZ] 86 190D
Thanks, Marshall. It sounds as though it's nearly identical to my euro 190D 2.5 5-speed, which is an 85. This has been my wife's car, but my son has been driving it more and more and recently has claimed it as his own. So my wife wants another (she doesn't like our 87 190D turbo nearly as much). Unfortunately, I called the guy and told him I was interested in the car and would like to make an offer. He immediately raised his asking price $500. He'll be a challenge to deal with!!! He's full of bull about the car and obviously doesn't know much about it. By the way, regarding mileage, we recently drove the 190D turbo on a 980 mile trip and in two tanks averaged 39 mpg--our best ever by a long ways. We usually get 31-34 with that car. I'm guessing it was a combo of some good summer fuel and not using the air. Ron Dwelle On Sep 17, 2005, at 3:23 PM, Marshall Booth wrote: The WDBDB26D4GF235928 identifies the car as an '86 or later (may have been MANUFACTURED i late '85 but model yar 1986+) 201.126 having a 2.5 liter 5 cylinder normaly aspirated engine. I'm in VA without my books so can't be SURE it's a factory 5 speed (that's part of the VIN information). If it's a a 5 speed with a 2.5 engine - that makes a WONDERFUL economical highway car. 40 mpg is possibe (38 more usual) on the highway. I was amazed that my 5 spd 2.5 did almost as well as my 5 spd 2.2 and 2.0 190Ds (with an automatic, it was NOT nearly that good). Marshall -- Marshall Booth Ph.D. Ass't Prof. (ret.) [MBZ] 190D tires
My son has taken over my wife's 85 190D 2.5 Euro and taken it off to college. It's in need of new tires. Currently, I have on it Nokian NRWs which have been excellent, but replacing them would be quite expensive and probably overkill for his needs (which are to drive 15 miles 4 days a week, to work, occasionally in snow--in Michigan. And, I suppose, picking up girls or whatever). Looking at Tire Rack, the best deal may be the Kumho Solus KH16. Anyone have experience with them? Any other suggestions for a good but cheap all-weather tire? Thanks, Ron Dwelle
