[MBZ] 190DT outside temp sensor

Does anyone know where the connecting plug for the outside temperature
sensor (located behind the front license plate) is, on a 190DTurbo?

[MBZ] plastic oil sucker

2006-01-14 Thread Ron Dwelle
About 6 months ago, someone posted info on a big plastic oil sucker,
similar to the top-sider, but all plastic. It was fairly expensive,
IIRC. I think someone had been involved in a group purchase.

I can't locate the posting. Can someone list the brand name, etc.?

I want this for my boat diesel--I don't like carrying the
metal-topsider around and think the plastic will work better.

Thanks,
Ron Dwelle

Maybe the shocks?

[MBZ] horsepower

2005-12-09 Thread Ron Dwelle
I was just looking at the specs for some new small marine diesels, from
Yanmar. I noticed that they list two different horsepower ratings for
different fuel temperature. For example, the engine I was looking at
produces 20 HP with the fuel temp at 25 centigrade and 22 HP with the
fuel temp at 40 centigrade. RPM etc are all equal. This is listed as
temperature at the inlet of the fuel injection pump.

That's a 10% increase in horsepower!

Maybe we should be increasing the fuel temp on our old Benzes

Re: [MBZ] 190D Block heater

2005-12-05 Thread Ron Dwelle

Curt--

You probably have a block heater--just not the cord. Check on the
passenger side of the engine--about where the block heater is on a
240D. There may be a plastic cap on the block heater--you just need to
buy the cord from Rusty. I had to do that on two 190Ds.

Okay I've been going through Rusty's site and making a list, he had the

The thing I didn't see and haven't seen anywhere yet is a block
heater. The block heater on my 240D has been a savior many times, at
-20F the 240D doesn't have a chance. So I'm keen to get a heater for
the 190D. I did notice this morning at 20F that the 190D started easier
than the 240D, I barely turned the key and it was running, not that the
240D started hard but the 190D just seemed easier.
So do I not need a block heater on this car? Its gotten to -20F every
winter since I've had a diesel MB so I would bet it'll do it again this
year.

[MBZ] oil test interval?

2005-11-30 Thread Ron Dwelle
I did two oil-sample tests on my 240D and two oil-sample tests on my
190DT, and decided to extend the oil-change interval to 7,500 miles.
(I'm sure I could have gone to 10K miles, but I chickened out.)

Now, I've gone through 2 oil changes on my 190DT and I'll have to do
the 2nd oil change on my 240D in a couple weeks.

Question: is there a reasonable length of time, or number of miles, or
number of oil changes, that I can confidently go before I do more oil
sample tests? (The tests are a little pricey.) What do you think?

Thanks,
Ron Dwelle

[MBZ] Thanks and an OT insurance question

2005-11-24 Thread Ron Dwelle
I also say Thanks to everyone on the list. And I have an insurance
question (boat not car).

I've never made an insurance claim in my life. But my sailboat (in
storage at a boatyard for the winter) blew over in a windstorm 10 days
ago and sustained considerable damage. My insurance company and the
boatyard's insurance are currently arguing over who's responsible.

I'm expecting to get an offer from one of them for damages. I'm pretty
sure it won't be totalled. I'm estimating that the damage will cost
about $15K to fix and the boat is worth maybe $25K to $30K.

My feeling is that I would prefer NOT to repair it, since I probably
wouldn't trust the boat in harsh conditions and we've been thinking of
changing boats anyway.

So, what kind of offer am I likely to get? What are my options when I
do get the offer.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, as I don't want to walk into this
deal blind.

Thanks again,

Ron Dwelle

Re: [MBZ] W124 charging system fails, how far can you drive, lots....

2005-11-17 Thread Ron Dwelle
That's not quite right. You probably have 50-60 hours of life at 1 amp.
When the battery gets much over 50% discharged, it probably won't have
enough juice to run the starter, and the lights will be noticeably dim.
The radio will probably run a lot longer, but not much else.

Re: [MBZ] battery chargers

2005-11-16 Thread Ron Dwelle

LTD--

I think the correct answer is, it depends on the charger. The problem
with leaving a cheap charger on--if it keeps pumping juice into the
battery--is that the battery will continue to gas or boil. Over time,
the electrolyte level will lower eventually dry out and destroy the
battery.

Overnight, the amount is probably not significant. You might want to
check and top up the electrolyte level a little more regularly, if you
leave the charger on a lot (assuming it's not a sealed battery.

The other thing that happens, again depending on the charger, is that
the battery will sulfate a little faster. You can de-sulfate a battery
by driving a very tiny current through the battery at a very high
voltage (16 volts or so), but the lower voltages of a cheap charger
will just cook the sulfate onto the plates. You need a charger capable
of equalizing the battery to avoid this problem. The Trojan battery
site, www.trojan-battery.com, has a good explanation.

I'm not so sure that the Battery Tender is a lot better than other
cheap chargers.

But here is my question. Is there any significant damage done by
leaving a

normal battery charger on overnight, where it might get to zero amps but
stay attached for a few hours? This is not a fancy battery charger that
shuts off or kicks into trickle mode or such.

I did leave it on overnight routinely last winter with no apparent
damage,
but am curious about the long term impact of doing this. We're talking
in my
case one of the Interstate Battery mega-mothers under the hood, not a

In my experience (6 Mercedes 4 of them diesels) I think this estimate is
pretty low. I have only had one transmission failure on one of my cars.
It was a 1971 250. When I bought it, the transmission was slipping, so I
knew it limited life left in it, but it had over 340,000 miles on it.

The following cars never needed any transmission work:

1982 300D 489K

1983 300D 342K

1981 240D 290K

1990 300D 244K

1984 280E 290K

The only thing I ever did with these cars is service the service the
transmission every 25-3.

I would bet that most cars on the road (even our American-made cars from
Detroit) will get better than 150,000 out of the transmissions.

I guess I also had a transmission fail on my 1981 Oldsmobile 98. Those
transmissions were bad back then. Mine still lasted 140,000 miles.

Over the last 3 years, the cost of crude has represented about 50% of
the cost of a gallon of diesel (give or take a little). Taxes have
dwindled from representing about 37% of the cost in 2002 to representing
less than 20% today. Distribution and marketing has dropped from more
than 10% of the costs in early 2002 to about 5% now.

What HAS really gone up? The cost of refining has gone from close to 5%
in early 2002 to more than 20% in the fall of 2005. And remember that 5%
of the cost of $1.50 diesel in 2002 was 7.5 cents a gallon, while 20+%
of $3 diesel is about 60 cents!

[MBZ] oil money

2005-10-25 Thread Ron Dwelle
A good story on the obscene profits being taken on fuel right now, in
the Wall Street Journal:

The Wall Street Journal, Russell Gold, 25 Oct 2005 (access ain't free) .

The five largest are expected to reap a record $28 billion in
collective earnings this quarter, and all signs point to a lucrative
six months to come, but they can't brag about it -- at least not
publicly. If they did, people might ask inconvenient questions, like:
Why are we making you rich by paying so much for gasoline right now?
Or: Why is an industry at the peak of profitability getting gajillions
in handouts from Congress? To avoid this kind of unpleasantness,
according to the story, firms may accentuate the negative in their
upcoming financial statements, loading up on special charges like
hurricane-related repairs and possible marketing losses, although
higher prices for oil and gas are expected to more than make up for the
costs of fixing damaged Gulf Coast oil and natural-gas infrastructure.

2005-10-04 Thread Ron Dwelle
Everyone in Michigan thinks studs are great, but that's probably
because they are illegal. Not sure what happens if you get caught
driving through the state with them on your car. I've found my HakkaQs
on the 240 and the Nokian NRWs on the 190D are adequate for anything
I've seen here, without studs.

What is your experience with snow tires?
In planning for this winter, I notice Nokian seems to offer more serious
options in studded tires.

But I have always avoided studded tire because I thought:

1. Studded tires are definitely benficial on ice.
2. The studs provide little, if any benefit on snow.
3. The studs actually decrease traction on wet and dry pavement above
feezing temps.
4. In many states you are required to limit the use of studs to a few
months

of the year.

So, unless you drive on ice a lot, studs are probably disadventageous.

Are my assumptions correct?

changed their price from $2.99/gallon.

This is the first time I've seen such a huge jump in prices in a single

Unfortunately, I called the guy and told him I was interested in the

By the way, regarding mileage, we recently drove the 190D turbo on a

ways. We usually get 31-34 with that car. I'm guessing it was a combo

highway. I was amazed that my 5 spd 2.5 did almost as well as my 5 spd
2.2 and 2.0 190Ds (with an automatic, it was NOT nearly that good).

[MBZ] 86 190D

2005-09-16 Thread Ron Dwelle
I called on a 190 D for sale in N. Carolina. The guy insists that it's
a 4 cylinder, 5-speed, and 1986. He claims it's a rare model--one of
only 200 made. I thought the 4 cylinder ended in 1985. Does anyone
have info on this?

Thanks,

[MBZ] 190D tires

2005-09-14 Thread Ron Dwelle
My son has taken over my wife's 85 190D 2.5 Euro and taken it off to
college. It's in need of new tires. Currently, I have on it Nokian NRWs
which have been excellent, but replacing them would be quite expensive
and probably overkill for his needs (which are to drive 15 miles 4 days
a week, to work, occasionally in snow--in Michigan. And, I suppose,
picking up girls or whatever).

Looking at Tire Rack, the best deal may be the Kumho Solus KH16. Anyone
have experience with them?

Any other suggestions for a good but cheap all-weather tire?

Thanks,
Ron Dwelle
