> So, what actually failed that lost the rod, which lost the block etc etc

My Camaro 'spun a bearing', and started with a barely perceptible knock
that got rapidly worse, over a 90 mile road trip, to the point where I was
putting it in neutral and coasting down hills, engine off, and keeping the
revs as low as possible when it was running.

Had I put many more revs on it, I'm sure it would have thrown the rod.
I was just trying to get to a town, a safe place to park and also to my
performance commitment. After the performance, I dealt with the car.

On the diesel, perhaps he didn't notice the extra knocking, and revved
it up 'one last time', like usual?

The 190D I bought for parts, converting my 190D to stickshift, had also
thrown a rod.

The older pumps were designed to shut down and lock out if they ran too long
(e.g. a leak) so they wouldn't burn out or run down the battery. Common leak
points are the diaphragms in the pods the soft rubber Ts and Xs that connect
the hard tubes, and the vacuum reservoir. Recommend you research your pump to
see if it has a reset and check fuses.

IF you had one, and you definitely do not, it'd be inside the vacuum/pressure
pump that lives in the foam football inside the trunk. It was part of the 126
cars that could only be opened from the driver's door. The later ones have
voting circuits, also inside the pump, that allows opening the whole car from
any of the three keylocks.

The Lake Isle of Innisfree

I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,
And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made;
Nine bean rows will I have there, a hive for the honey bee,
And live alone in the bee-loud glade.

And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow,
Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings;
There midnight's all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow,
And evening full of the linnet's wings.

I will arise and go now, for always night and day
I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore;
While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements grey,
I hear it in the deep heart's core.

In unrelated news, I seem to have an extra w123 sls pump. I guess there is
a rebuild kit for it, so maybe I will shine it up and put it on ebay.
Unless someone here wants it.

Interestingly I thought the 603 ran the sls from the PS; wondering if I can
sub one of those pumps onto the 648 motor in the euro wagon at some point.
Custom bracket or something. I have no idea what the relevant pressures and
volumes would be, or if it is a single pump vs two pumps in one housing.

2019-10-23 Thread Clay Monroe via Mercedes
SWMBA thinks along those lines. New cars are “more reliable” so cost less to
keep on the road.

Steaming Pile

She has not taken the thing she drives to the shop for other than oil changes
in the past six years and 50k miles. Tossing $20k + paying it off all that
time and no visit to keep it running right?

She gets the jeep from her co-worker who claims it had all dealer service. The
thing comes with close to 140k miles and gets no service these past four years.
Now she wants to send it to the crusher, as it is falling apart from lack of
service. The solution she came up with was to spend $10k to get a teenaged car
with 100k on the clock last autumn. This spring she changes her tune to
needing something with less than a decade of wear and maybe $18k. Which has
changed to five years old, under 50k miles and maybe $25k this past month.
This week the car has to be same new, but under 30k miles and the price has
jumped to around $30k. Then add the $2500 to ship it up from teh lower 48.

All I wanted was to be allowed to drive my ’82 SD, bring up my tools and spend
enough to fix the OM617.

$20k can buy a brand new car if you're willing to buy a base model.
I chalk it up to the "I deserve it" culture where every penny earned ought to
go right back out because "I deserve it."
I mentioned to Angie the other day that I'd been thinking about buying a new
snowmobile, the base model is right in the $8,000 range. She heard "I'm going
to buy a new snowmobile" and wants to know why I haven't done it yet. She knows
I can afford it but the reason I can afford it is that I've never done it...

Can you tell us each test you performed and the voltage of each test

If you will do that, it will help to get to the root of your problem.

You have been treating symptoms and guesses, but not the problem.

Is that the same place that diagnosed the alternator?
Like Jim said, a bad switch that stays in the accessory position could kill
your battery overnight, but won't prevent the battery from charging normally
with the engine running.
13-14V with the engine running and less than 12.6 with the ignition off means a
parasitic loss like leaving accessories on with the key out.
Less than 13V (should be about 13.4V with a factory voltage regulator) with the
engine running means the battery is dead flat or the alternator can't keep up
with the load.

What does "I have done all battery tests" mean? If you mean "don't tell me to

already done so we don't tell you to go over it.

'91 SDL is still a 126 right? The IS a fuse for the glowplugs, otherwise a
wiring short sets the car on fire. The fuse will be in-line with the relay.
I know I'm going to come off as curmudgeonly here but I really hate it when

My guess is that the ignition switch is leaving on accessories, causing
constant battery drain.

If you're going to have old(er) cars, you need a minimal level of tools. For
the electrical
system, you need a battery charger and a good multimeter. Bonus points if you
also
have a clamp-on DC ammeter, but it's not strictly necessary. (Just makes it a
lot easier.)
An old-fashioned test light (12V bulb in an awl handle, with a clip) is also
cheap, and useful.

Another thought. On my tractor site there are a surprising number of battery
cable failures where the conductor corroded inside the insulation (so still
looks fine). Often the process of moving the cable to change/charge the

Re: [MBZ] (no subject)

2019-01-16 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
Diagnosing this kind of problem takes a little understanding of simple DC
circuits, a meter, and patience. It sounds like your dealer is missing at
least one of those. IMO, you have been ripped off.

If you want to do this DIY and stop writing checks I'm sure several here will
advise. I would start by measuring the battery voltage AT THE POSTS with the
car off. Maybe you just have a bad battery. Battery testing at FLAPS is free
and easy. With a known good battery, what happens to the voltage at the posts
when you connect the cables? There should be almost no voltage drop when you
connect the cables but there will be some current draw if your car has
computers that boot up when power is applied. What happens to the battery
voltage (at the posts) when the glow plugs fire up and when you try to crank?
If there is a small parasitic load draining the battery overnight you can
locate it using an ammeter and pulling fuses until you find the offending
circuit.

By the way, it's a bitch to replace the whole key switch/interlock assembly but
the electrical part is a separate piece that's not hard to remove/replace, at
least if it's like 123s and 126s.

Good luck.

Your car still has this problem? That sounds like bad connector at the
alternator end of the alternator harness. See my earlier post.

The idiot lights comes on and goes off when engine is running and idling.
Once the battery is charged for a few minutes, the engine fires up. When
key is turned to off and engine stops, car won't start again because the

I lived on the water in Seabrook TX (south of Houston, near NASA) from
1969-1973. The land there sank 2-3 ft. (WRT sea level) during that time, which
was attributed to pumping too much fresh water out of the aquifer.

I believe that before "climate change" became popular, a study had
determined that Miami was sinking due to Man's actions that reduced the
amount of fresh water in the everglades. Basically less fresh water in the
everglades was drying out the structure under Miami, and so it was
shrinking and subsiding.

Determining the root cause of sea level change in any location requires a
careful study of all the factors. When we visit the Charleston aquarium, I
make a point of showing my daughter the map that shows South Carolina's
coastline in present day and in past ages, I think they show a coastline
from 10,000 years ago and several million years ago. They show the
coastline has been further out on the continental shelf where we now have
ocean, and also much further inland, like 100 miles inland. THAT is climate
change, and it has occurred and will continue to occur no matter what Man
does or does not do.

I don't believe the Seattle area was directly subject to the Pleistocene
glaciation. The ice sheet advance stopped further to the north.

More than likely a small assistant.

When the northern U.S. was under miles of ice, the ground under the ice,
under a pressure of roughly 2289 psi per mile of ice (neglecting any
compression of the ice), was pressed down and the southern half of the
U.S. was forced up.

Now that the ice is gone, the ground in the respective areas are moving
to their original altitudes, the north moving up and the south moving
down.

Karl,

The Miss. is trying to go back to Texas like it swaps every 10-20,000
years. The Corp. is trying to keep it where it is because of shipping.
Erosion builds the coast and the Gulf takes it away during hurricanes. You
can't fight Mother Nature, but we arrogant humans keep thinking we can.
Louisiana should give the Miss. back to Texas, then they could go back to
smuggling like the old days and make some real coin :-))) Just some extra info.

Anyone know of a shop that rebuilds rear ends? I'm putting a wavetrac lsd
into a 91 500sl diff. Apparently pretty straightforward except some of the
shims are nla so need to grind down to suit. Pinion does not need to come
out.

Anyone rebuild one of these things? It is non asr non lsd now. Going into
the 124.

Thanks

Folks,

If you ever receive a request to go to a link that you don’t recognize, there
are some great free tools online you can use to check it out:

Urlquery.net

Virustotal.com (has provisions for scanning files and checking URLs)

Great easy to use resources, and trusted by us cyberguys.

Just drop your web address into one of these and they will return a report
showing if it’s recognized as a source of nasty stuff.

I had the same problem. Typically, it's the hatch seal and rear quarter

would suspect the window gasket in your case. Get a new one, re-

I sent this a few days ago, but it never went out.

The tailgate on my 85 Wagon is filling with water when it rains. A new
behavior. Is it usually the window seal, the wiper nozzle seal, the wiper
stalk seal, or the main door gasket? Some water in the footwell of the 3rd
seat also.

I guess the first step is reinstall the glass. The door gasket looks good,
but perhaps I could tighten the latch position a bit.

Thanks.

2016-02-06 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Toward the end of my college career I had an early 386, or maybe it was a 286,
laptop which actually had an internal hard drive. The drive aged badly and
would get "sticktion" where the platter wouldn't spin up. You could tell it had
happened because there was no sound on bootup, the drive was fairly loud in
operation. The failing drive was one reason I'd gotten the laptop for cheap,
really cheap, like $20 cheap.
I found that if you held the computer about 4" off the desk and dropped it the
drive would free up and everything was fine. I used it like that for a couple
years until I graduated. When I left I sold the laptop (for considerably more
than I'd paid for it) to a younger student with instructions on how to deal
with the sticktion issue. A month or two later he called me, the computer had
quit and nothing he could do would bring it back. I didn't live far away so I
stopped by for a visit. When he powered it up the drive made the most gawdawful
grinding noise that clearly said "this is the end", I also noticed a big crack
in the screen.
When probed he said "I did just like you said" and picked up the laptop and
dropped it from waist height on the floor...

In many older computers all the chips were socketed.  They eventually
figured out that this was a reliability nightmare unless one used
sockets that cost near as much as the chips in them, and then
sockets went away.  Except for sometimes the CPU itself, and maybe
the RAM devices, once SIMM came along.

But sometimes a good thump does plenty of good.

That was one of the beauties of the Amiga computers. You could swap
out a lot of of the chips for various upgrades. (another was that
you could run the Mac OS on them)

But the standard was for the stealer to hold the box waist high and
drop it to "seat the chips" before unpacking.
