Re: [MBZ] 116 300SD starter

2021-05-08 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
The click _is_ the starter relay, on the starter. Either the starter is bad,
or the wiring to it is feeble. The latter can be diagnosed with a voltmeter.
(Feebleness can include the battery itself. The voltmeter is all you need,
but of course wielding it properly counts.) Especially do not forget to
check the grounds.

Because it's clicking, you know the key and neutral safety switches,
and the wiring to the starter relay, are all good.

You measure:

1) Voltage of battery, both off and with starter 'engaged'.
2) Voltage across starter, both off and with starter 'engaged'.
3) Voltage across each of the 3 (4?) big battery cables, with starter engaged.

Thanks. I may have to pull the air cleaner to get a better view of it. I
thought maybe the battery I put in it was low but. It appears to test good.
It’s on the charger and will try it again later.

There is no starter relay. You either have connection issues with the
battery or ignition switch, or a bad starter. There is no easy place to
jump the starter terminal 50 like later cars, you need to go directly to
the starter

I'd think it would be very similar to a 123 diesel since they both use

[MBZ] 116 300SD starter

2021-05-07 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
In moving some cars around this afternoon, I plopped a battery in this
300SD and went to start it and just click.  It does not sound like a
click from the starter but a click from a relay perhaps. Car ran when
parked, yea yea I know.  It has been sitting about 6 months and not sure
if something is going on with the starter solenoid or something else.
When I hold the key in the start position and move the shifter out of
part and back, you can hear that relay or whatever it is clicking.  I
tried banging on the starter but could not get a good whack on it so
that was not effective.  Do these have a terminal somwhere to hook up a
remote starter switch like the 123 and 126 does?

Re: [MBZ] 116 300SD

2013-08-08 Thread rogerhga
Mitch,
I'm not totally familiar with all the CA, National differences. It's not real
easy to put an 81-85 engine in a 78-80 300SD. The 78-80 had different glow plug
relays (even within those years, but definitely different than the 81-85).
There is also a difference in the transmission vacuum structure so you'd
probably have to use the 81-85 tranny also. Battery is located differently so
different cables, and on and on. I'm not sure the effort would be worth it. But
then after reading a lot of emails on multiple Benz lists, I've come to believe
that some people will attempt anything just for the macho buzz of having
accomplished it.
But to Kaleb, this car is still probably worth more than $1800 in parts. I just
had to replace the tranny in my 1980 300SD (around 425,000 miles and just
finally quit) and I had a time finding one. I lucked into a low mileage (I
hope, not that recyclers would bend the truth) used one at Catalina Recycle in
AZ. So far, it's good. And don't think about finding the rebuilt rear half
axles, etc. etc. About 3yrs ago the number of parts for the 116 started
dwindling on eBay and elsewhere, so if you want to buy it for maybe $1200 and
part it out, you would probably make a profit.

Well that rusty green 116 on ebay has all the breather lines that
run from the valve cover to the u pipe on the front of the turbo,
as well as the exhaust line from the vacuum pump rerouted. Seller
says he was told because it had the EGR removed. I do not recall
ever seeing egr on those. I say the reason is because it has so
much blowby it is dumping oil into the intake.

Kaleb,
My 1980 300SD does not have an EGR. There were differences between the CA
versions and the rest of the world, so don't know about the left coast. Don't
know about dumping oil from blowby, mine doesn't. An EGR on a 617 diesel is a
very lame addition. My Indie plugged the vac. line on my 83 300D over 12 years
ago and I've never missed it or seen any problems from it not being there.

Don't know about dumping oil from blowby, mine doesn't. An EGR on a 617 diesel is a very lame addition. My Indie plugged the vac. line on my 83 300D over 12 years ago and I've never missed it or seen any problems from it not being there.
Best Wishes,

So, if a 116 SD had EGR, it would be a sign of an engine swap, or maybe a CA
model?

[MBZ] 116 300SD wiring aux fan to run when AC is on

2009-06-20 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Getting ready to work on a 116 300SD which has been converted to 134.
Doing a compressor etc. I want to rig it so whenever the compressor is
kicked on, the fan runs. As it is now, it will only run when the temp
sensor kicks it on which sitting at idle does not cool very good. If I
simply jumper the wires at the switch, the fan will run as soon as the
key is turned on. I just want it to run when the compressor turns on.
What is the best way to go about this? Probably going to add a can of
that arctic boost stuff Zippy loves as well.

It sounds undercharged. When sitting at idle, the temperature
(AC receiver) ought to go up to the point where the fan kicks
on and cools it back down, incidentally improving the cooling.
You could try a little more juice to see if it improves the
situation.

Add an ice-cube relay. Wire the coil in parallel with the compressor
clutch. Wire a set of normally-open contacts in parallel with the
temperature switch.

Well darnit, I had become under the impression that 0W Mobil 1 was not
harmful. The bottle doesn't list any precautions, and I've been told that it
only acts as a 0 weight oil when cold - so no problemo.

It isn't harmful. The amount of bad information and boneheaded opinions on
 this subject are positively cosmic.

The biggest detriment to using M-1 0W-40 is that the viscosity when hot
(rated as 40) is actually at the very low end of the range for 40 weight
oils (there isn't one value but a rather large range). It's much more
like other M-1 xW-30 weight oils than the other M-1 5W-40 weight oils.

All of the M-1 oils have additives that will dissolve most sludge and
will result in seals that have already swollen to shrink toward their
original size. This CAN result in increase oil leaks. In addition, ALL
of the Mobil 1 oils have additives that will inhibit leaking at soft
seals, BUT it takes time for them to work so it is usual when changing
from conventional to Mobil synthetics, for oil leaks (that already
exist) to first increase and then decrease over about 5-10kmi. If you
remove the M-1 and replace it with some other oil before the additive
works, you will of course NOT benefit from the seal swelling effect and
the leaks may actually get worse.

my former 300SD.

[MBZ] 116 300SD radiator and Bendix front calipers.

2006-06-20 Thread John Berryman

OK Folks,
Here's a chance for someone to pocket some of my hard earned cash.
The radiator in our 79 300SD has a leak and the left front caliper is
frozen up.

The radiator may be repairable or maybe not.

I am looking to purchase a radiator and 2 Bendix front calipers
(LR) used. Anyone wanting to sell said items, please contact me here
or privately.
My intention is to return the 300SD to daily-driver status and take
the Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo (which is for sale for $3000) off the
road. This should get us by until I can bring the white 300TD,
located in Tn. back to life. I plan on using the wagon as my daily-
driver from that point on.

I am also offering for sale at this time a 1984 300TD. It has some
rust but nothing structural, mostly surface. There is a small leak in
the hydraulics of the SLS that I have not yet identified and it needs
a driveshaft center bearing to be able to be driven anywhere.
202,000mi engine and trans are real good. $1800 takes it right now,
as is where is. I have a few pics that I will send to anyone interested.

I am pressed for time and space, something has to go. I have not
advertised locally yet.

Thanks,
Johnny B.

[MBZ] 116 300SD Axle

2006-02-07 Thread Bob DuPuy
Sorry if you've seen this before. I sent it yesterdayand thought it
might have slipped off into the either when it seemed the list might
have been down for awhile.

It looks like my new to me 1980 300SD needs a new right side
axle. By the looks of the boots someone has been here before. Is the
consensus still to look for a decent used set because rebuilds don't
hold up? What vehicles would make suitable donors?
Could I swap in the whole rear section of a later 126?
