Yes, I was also forgetting that one.

Any rubber mounts / bushings / flex discs that are older than ten years are
suspect according to the late Dr Marshall Booth.

Rubber mount for differential?

Maybe start with engine mounts and then replace every piece of rubber back to
the differential mounts, if your budget allows.

My indy was of the mind that it was a waste of his time and my cash to fix just
one flex disk when I came in with vibrations. His book time to do the front

disk. Just the cost of parts with the mark up. I never pushed him not to do
his best. He fixed the SD, E300D and the 220D, as well as the R107 when things
got harmonic.

Being off one spline WILL cause vibration.

I have not done it but it should be fairly easy to replace the center
support. The big thing is to be absolutely sure that you mark the
parts so that they can be put back in the same relationship to each
other. The drive shaft is balanced as a unit and if you are out by a
spline or two, it will likely be a problem.

Center bearing support bushing is bad. I'd replace the front flex disk if the
rear was bad too, they are under the same conditions and if one was iffy the
other is too. Worth the time to replace the center carrier bearing too.

What happens is that under acceleration the bad bushing will allow the
driveshaft to go just very slightly off center and shake (as will a bad flex
disk). Acceleration forces are much greater than deceleration drag so little
or nothing happens when you are coasting.

You will have to carefully mark the driveshaft before you take it apart, not
all of them were marked for proper alignment in 1980.

Yes, this is true... its likely the center support, not the bearing
itself. Its a good idea to replace the flex disc as well. Both can look
fine visually and cause issues with vibration.

That's a good start point, and usually the solution. Start with simple / cheap
known wear items.

Are the boots on the half axles still intact? If they've failed, time to
replace those.

The U-joints can get stiff / notchy with time, and I understand a good mechanic
can feel the movement when they are off the car, and ID a bad u-joint.

Once you've experienced it, driveline vibration is much higher pitched
than wheel-related noise. (Due to the gear ratio in the differential.) Seems
to me that it would be unlikely to be the center bearing, but it could be the
front flex disc or the center support bushing. Or, the U-joint. Of course,
one replaces the bearing too once you have it all apart. It could be possible
that the slip joint is loose.

a lady doctor when new and she kept it meaning to give it to one of her
kids...but they didn't want it. Anyway, right before we got it from a small
car lot, she had had it to the local MB dealership in Atlanta for a complete
service (around $900 in 1996). We've taken it on numerous trips and my wife
drove it daily to work for many years. Now that we are retired, it has been
sitting mostly for the past several years. I'm getting ready to reactivate it
with new brake lines, hoses, belts, valve adjustment just to start. Later, I
plan a complete front suspension work, a new AC kit, and new rear axles. It
will cost a little, but the car is still great inside (had the leather seats
and pads replaced after we got it) and the body is solid. I replaced the
transmission 2 years ago with one that had 95,000 miles on it. The engine
starts quickly and it has great power. I installed new tires last year. It's
a great road trip car and the mileage is good (28-30mpg). As I tell people,
it's just getting broke in. I could see it going to a million.

Thanks for asking and pardon my long reply.

Roger

Thanks for the kind words on my wife's car. I'm getting ready to do some much

It only has around 420,000 miles and on dino oil no less.

Re: [MBZ] 1980 300SD W116

2019-04-28 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
That’s part of the deal, Max. It’s been almost 20 years since I’ve touched a
W110/111/112, and I wanted something I could dive into that would let me go
through just about everything without a major expense. Certainly, I’ve dropped
more than I paid into it at this point, not including my labor, but I’ve also
learned a great deal about the chassis and restored some of the knowledge I had
previously.

I don’t think I’m upside down on it yet, but by the time I’m done I’ll be at or
near the break even point, I’m sure. If the market is up it might make sense to
pass it along and find another nicer example with the proceeds. If not, no
harm, no foul, it will have a place here in the garage for sure.

I don’t know about you guys, but after a while I’ll get bored with stuff and
want something new to do. As long as I can find other things to direct my
energies at I’m good.

Nope. Far too much to be done. I was hoping that I might use this car to
“crowbar” up to a nicer example, but as I watch the market it seems unlikely
that will be an option. Of course, people are paying stupid money for this sort
of thing on BAT, but I’m not convinced it would work in my favor.

When I get it nearly done I’ll probably run it by them to see if they’re
interested and what sort of reserve they would want on it. Again, I really
doubt it would be worth it. If I could get north of $12K I might consider it,
but I really doubt they would price it at that level. It’s a great car, and
while it does have it’s warts, it’s a solid example and even more so with all
the work I’ve put into it.

I could swing another car around here if I wanted to. I’ve got a buddy who
lives a few blocks away that’s TDY in Monterey for two years starting in May,
so I have free storage if I need/want it.

Re: [MBZ] 1980 300SD W116

2019-04-28 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Dash appeared to be a really dark brown, much like the dash in my finnie. It
wasn’t black.

Dang it, now I’ve got the “new car” bug. Poop. Going to look at this for a
possible acquisition if I could get the price down a little. Roll up windows!

Very convincing. If you could get a donor interior, it might be worth some
trouble.

Re: [MBZ] 1980 300SD W116

2019-04-28 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I looked at it.

Not my kind of car, although I would say it has good bones. If I had a place to
park it and just tinker with it over time I would have dropped the $1300 for
it. A repaint, but a good one. Minor rust in the left rear fender behind the
wheel in the usual place. A little bit of rust on the rocker on the right
front. Paint is solid and would probably polish up nicely. Whoever did the
repaint did a good job - no signs of overspray or masking.

Car drives straight and true, transmission shifts properly. Nearly no boost to
speak of, but the owner says they removed the air cleaner to check the turbo
and it spins freely. They obviously don’t know these cars, as the line to the
ALDA is clearly clogged up from the looks of things. I didn’t remove it, but I
would bet dollars to doughnuts that it just needs the ALDA line cleaned out to
get turbo operation again. ALDA is still sealed.

The engine and other bits appear to be untouched, that is, nearly everything
appears to be original or if replaced, done so with the correct stuff.

Interior is tired.

Servo/ACC is non-operational. Servo appears to be the original and shows signs
of leaking. Dash wood is tired/cracked. Windows work. Cruise is non-operational
(surprise!!!)

Rear window is delaminating. Anodized aluminum trim around the windshield is
missing, owner says it just flew off one day when he was going down the
highway. The right headlight door is screwed to the headlight assembly.

Chrome is solid and intact, no damage to speak of. Rubber strips on the bumpers
is intact and solid. Belt trim is intact and solid, with the small pieces just
behind the rear door missing on both sides. Anodized aluminum is in good
condition and not cloudy, which was surprising considering how badly the
upholstery is toasted.

Dash is cracked, upholstery is toasted in the expected places from exposure to
the sun. Tachometer is intermittent (another surprise!) but the tach amp is
intact and appears to be original. I pulled it and plugged it back in and it
started working.

Good temperature drop across the radiator, about 30 degrees or so between inlet
and outlet at operating temperature. Same with the oil cooler. Solid oil
pressure.

I didn’t get under it but took a few pictures and the undercarriage appears to
be clean and unrusted for the most part.

Can’t think of anything else.

[MBZ] 1980 300SD W116

2019-04-28 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Dan,

I would go for it before someone else. The car looks great. The servo
is a 1/2 hour replacement. If the fan is bad, it's an easy replacement via the
glove box. Check the front suspension and the rear axles. It might need a
valve adjustment. If the power is low, it's probably filters or the overboost
switch gets carboned up. My 80 300SD has over 425,000 miles and will still
crank up and run although it spends most of its time in the garage these days.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email me.

Good luck and best wishes,

Roger

I suspect the best place for transmission throttle rod and vacuum information is
that 1978 mechanic's introduction to 116.120 book that's somewhere at my
parents' house, but if I could find the right transmission .pdf it should be
there too.

Anybody remember the exact designation for the 116.120's transmission?
There should be a repair manual for it.

Re: [MBZ] 1980 300SD Transmission Problem

2015-10-14 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
Roger, My '79 TD had the rod arrangement but (not being a turbo) there was
no vacuum circuit for the transmission.

I have a paper 917.95 engine service manual that may have some clues (or
maybe not). I found this vacuum diagram for a non EGR setup that may (or
may not) reflect your setup: <http://pt709.synology.me/0.7.1.8-150_3.jpg>

I think the valve/cam-plate thing (on the right) is the vacuum engine stop
circuit in the key switch. The vacuum control valve appears to have 3
ports.

That is quite different from the setup on my '82 SD where the vacuum control
valve only has two ports, the restrictor is external, and the transmission
vacuum modulator is on the left. On my 82 SD vacuum to the transmission is
totally independent from the switchover valves (which only effect EGR).

This next diagram: <http://pt709.synology.me/14.8-050_8.jpg> illustrates
the function of the switchover valve in the extended and depressed positions
and this diagram: <http://pt709.synology.me/14.8-050_4.jpg> shows the
internal workings of that valve.

The way I read the diagram, the tranny vacuum modulator gets full vacuum at
idle/low power but that vacuum gets modulated by the vacuum control valve at
higher power settings.

Of course, your '80 SD could be entirely different

Thanks for the diagrams, but still no joy. The first one is somewhat close, but

Re: [MBZ] 1980 300SD Transmission Problem

2015-10-13 Thread rogerhga--- via Mercedes
Curly,
Yes, Mark and others have advised me that the tranny is getting too much vacuum
to shift properly. And it seems the most obvious culprit is the vacuum
modulator on top of the IP, but I won't know for positive until I can get the
vacuum checked. I hope it's not as the last time it went, the MB dealership had
to order the correct one from Germany. No, my setup doesn't even have the
little plastic vacuum switches on top of the valve cover, although my 1983 300D
does have that setup. The 1980 was an odd car, different vacuum setup,
different glow plug relay, the old servo on the climate control, etc. etc. It
is a great car to drive. Rides and handles fantastic. And it has lasted, except
for the tranny, it is all original down to the exhaust system with around
425,000 miles using the cursed dino oil :-
Thanks again,

Re: [MBZ] 1980 300SD Transmission Problem

2015-10-13 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
If memory serves, the switches on top of the valve cover and thermo valve
are only for the EGR. You are better off without EGR (unless you are an
urban tree hugger) and many owners have disabled the EGR by various means
for that reason. The vacuum line to the gizmo on the IP should have a
restrictor in it. Make sure that is there. There are restrictor various
sizes (color coded) to tweak shift performance. The gizmo on the IP is a
variable vent that bleeds off more vacuum at higher throttle. The idea is
to simulate manifold vacuum of a gasoline engine (lots of vac at idle and
almost none at full throttle). The modulator valve on the tranny is also
adjustable but get the vacuum right first. Does yours also have a
mechanical cable from the accelerator linkages to the transmission (probably
a cable)? That cable adjustment sets the shift points and can also cause
problems. With older transmissions, considerable adjusting may be needed
for smooth shifts.

2015-10-13 Thread rogerhga--- via Mercedes
Scott,
My car has the rod to the tranny and not the cable. Again, per Mark at Sun
Valley, it's an "early, simplified" version. The switches on top of the valve
cover are tied to both the IP and the EGR circuit, so I don't think you could
bypass them. My car does not have the EGR, but my 1983 300D does and it also
has the same vac diagram as it appears in the 1980 MB Service Manual. But my
setup is NOT diagrammed in that manual. I have a call into the local MB
dealership to see if they have a correct diagram for my car. As best I can
determine from a good bit of good input, it is probably the green restrictor in
the line going to the IP modulator valve or the IP modulator valve itself. I
hope its the restrictor as the IP modulator valve will be almost impossible to
find for this car.

[MBZ] 1980 300SD Transmission Problem

2015-10-12 Thread rogerhga--- via Mercedes
So...an update. It seems that my 1980 300SD has a "simplified, early version"
vacuum setup for that model year. I have the 1980 MB service manual and the
vacuum diagram does NOT match. I spoke with Mark again at Sun Valley and he
advised me that my setup is the simplified, early version. To clarify, it does
NOT have: an EGR, a thermo-vacuum valve on the thermostat housing, vacuum
switches on top of the valve cover, an extra "Y" between the vacuum pump and
the vacuum modulator on top of the IP. So, tomorrow I'm going to get a vacuum
gauge and install to start testing the vacuum per Mark. He says my setup is
more simple than the later versions, but the amount of vacuum should still be
the same. It's odd that my car has an earlier version when it was made in May
1980 towards the end of the model production. In fact it has 126 calipers and
rotors on the front. The vac diagram in the 1980 service manual shows the setup
that appears on my 1983 300D and I think on the 126 models. I guess MB
was mixing and matching to complete the 1980 300SD model production for the
116 series and already into the 1981 300SD 126 series production. I imagine
they assumed the dealerships could figure it out even though they produced an
incomplete service manual.
If anyone has a correct diagram or can provide additional info, please let me
know. The tranny still shifts better (stiffer with no flare or slip) if I just
disconnect the line to the transmission vacuum modulator and plug it off. I'm
told I can run it that way without harming anything and it's better for the
tranny to shift too firm than to slip which harms the clutches.

You are getting too much vacuum at the transmission. if it happened
suddenly, I doubt the problem is the modulator, but I don't know the
modulator failure modes, so maybe someone here can tell us or Mark at
Sun Valley can tell you. Anything that restricts the vacuum before
the modulator could be the problem.

It seems close to my 81 240D, with no cables or rods. only the
little plastic valve/switch thing on top of the valve cover.

So...an update. It seems that my 1980 300SD has a "simplified, early

When my 1977 Saab was made, the spec was SAE 70 gear oil, I forget the GL

By the mid 1980s, the recomendation had changed to SAE 30 (or maybe 10W30, can't
remember for sure) motor oil.
IIRC, it shifted a bit nicer with the proper (hard to find) gear oil than with
5W30 M1 in it.

Chrysler's 1980s transaxles took motor oil in early years, then Dexron II or III
later. AFAIK there was no mechanical change when the fluid changed. IIRC, my
1989 Horizon was happier with 5W30 M1 than with the Dexron that the factory put

Currently I've got Redline MTL and MT-90 mixed in the Jetta 50/50 but I'm
thinking to switch it to all MTL this fall. The MTL is a little thinner and
should shift easier in the cold. The factory VW stuff is very thin and can be
noisy in older cars. The mix wasn't bad last winter but would be stiff for the
first couple shifts at below zero temps.
I want to change again because the stuff that came out last fall was nasty and
smelled bad. I've put 15,000 miles on the car and the trans is way quieter

My GM 4-speed pickup (117 mm) requires 80W90 GL-5 gear oil.  The
big truck transmissions I'm familiar with use either 50W or
 75-80W90 gear oil.

I just checked my '85 GM factory service manual.  The 3-speed and
the small 4-speed use DexronII.  The big 117mm 4-speed uses 80W90.

Was that for big trucks? My '88 was only an S15...

The term big truck to me means class 7 or greater. The 117mm
transmission (also called SM465) wasn't ever used in those. It was
used in 1/2 ton (class 1), and maybe through the 2-ton (class 3) -
which are typically referred to as light duty. So big as
compared to the mini-pickups, but not really a big truck. *smiles*

[MBZ] 1980 300SD Tranny Issue

2014-07-23 Thread rogerhga--- via Mercedes
Question for the list:
Last year I had a used tranny installed in my 1980 300SD. The tranny was from a
recycler in AZ. It supposedly only had 95K on it. My indie installed it. He
said everything looked good and really clean, but it had been sitting in a
really dry environment for who knows how long.
So, the issue, it slips when shifting once it gets warm/hot. When it's first
cold, it shifts fine. Once hot, if you let if shift at low RPMs, it shifts
fine. If you give it hard acceleration up to about 35 mph and let off, it will
jump from 1st to 4th and bypass 2/3 and shift fine that way. At 35 mph, 4th
gear is fine for acceleration to driving speed. My indie felt that I should
just keep driving it and hope the internal seals would get saturated and then
it would start shifting fine. It has not.
Now, my question is: 1) Should I try synthetic fluid to see if it will swell
the seals, 2) try some of the MacParts trans medic solutions, 3) is this an
issue that could be repaired reasonably? Again, my indie, like most, like to
swap parts, not repair parts. Otherwise, it is and has been a good car.
Any thoughts or suggestions that would help would be greatly appreciated.
Best Wishes,
Roger

[MBZ] 1980 300SD Transmission not transmitting past 1

2013-07-06 Thread rogerhga
Thanks for everyone's suggestions. I don't have the car to look at right now,
my Indie has it. He did a tranny service, said they didn't find any parts, etc.
in the pan, slight signs of clutch wear which he said was normal for its age
(33 years/425,000 miles). I'll go see him on Monday and ask him to check the
other suggestions; Bowden cable, kickdown switch, kickdown valve, plastic
governor gear, and discuss servicing the valve body without removing the whole
tranny. A lot of mechanics are hesitant to service the tranny to any extent, I
think most would rather do the tranny swap.
Thanks again for the suggestions...you guys are great.

Re: [MBZ] 1980 300SD Transmission not transmitting past 1

2013-07-05 Thread Hendrik and Fay

I am presuming the mechanic changed the oil and filter?
The valve body can be removed and disassembled/inspected.
Another valve body could be found to see if it is the problem.
Lot easier to R and R the valve body than the entire transmission.

Anyway first thing is to see what the fluid is like and see if there are
nasties in the pan, if there then yes it's time for a rebuild or such.
You would be surprised how junk these boxes can put up with before
calling it a day, which is the reason I always have a laugh when people
go fully anal about a clean dipstick.

Governor drive gear is plastic in these trannies and known to
fracture, leaving you with no governor pressure and hence absolutely
no upshift from first (verifty you don't have a stuck kickdown switch
or valve).

This can repaired in car, but you have to make sure there are not
plastic bits in the associated check valve downstream -- otherwise, a
new gear won't fix it.

If it's not that, it's time for a tranny rebuild.

Re: [MBZ] 1980 300SD Transmission

2013-07-04 Thread Rich Thomas
There are a coupla SDs in the knackers near me, I think one of them had
a bad tranny as there were empty tranny fluid bottles in the car, the
other one, who knows? It would be a bugger to get one out from there
though, and not knowing the condition would be quite iffy.

Wonder if any of those cars that got their engines destroyed during the
cash for clunkers debacle are still around?

To all,
It's been awhile since I've posted anything, but I'm currently seeking tips,
suggestions, advice, etc. My wonderful old MB with around 425,000 miles has
finally stopped shifting gears. My mechanic says he's tried everything to
revive it but it appears something broke in the shift body as it won't shift up
from first. Do you guys have suggestions about finding a used tranny? I don't
feel like the extra money for a new/rebuilt is worth it due to the car's age,
etc. I've been searching the web, craigslist, etc, but have found little.
Thanks for any suggestions.

[MBZ] 1980 300SD Modulator Valve

2010-12-28 Thread rogerhga
To all...a very Happy New Year...
This is an odd request, but I thought maybe...so I'll ask. The transmission
modulator valve on this car has a plastic piece that connects to the valve on
one side and the vacuum line connects on the other end. Mine is cracked and
causing the tranny to shift hard. My Indie tried to epoxy it, but no joy as it
is not holding (something about too much oil on a plastic part for the epoxy to
hold). Anyway, would anyone have an old valve with a good plastic vacuum
connector? I'd be happy to pay for the part and shipping. MBUSA says they have
5 of these connectors and they are all in Germany. I don't want to order the
whole valve as I don't need the valve and it's about 4 times more expensive
than just the connector.
Thanks for any leads, parts, assistance.
Best Wishes,

I had to go to page to to see it. Yes, indeed, it is very nice. 1327 miles
and virtually new. Price is in line with new as well, $65,000. A little
more than I can spend right now.

I really like the next item on the list, the 1933 290 Cabriolet B. $175k
is a bit much for me, though.

The 1957 300Sc Cabriolet, black with red leather on page 3 is a wonder,
though (beyond the $750k price tag!): 0 miles?

Re: [MBZ] 1980 300SD

2009-10-12 Thread LarryT
Yeah, as others have noted, the cars they are hoping to sell are pretty
extraordinary examples - low miles and 100% restorations done - but I would
wonder if they could really get some of those prices - even at the high-end
auctions - I guess somewhere in the world there's someone who wants a 1980
300SD in like new condition! I'd think they'd be more likely to get that
kind of money for a W140 350SDL (with repaired engine) in pristine condition
and very low miles. That'd be my dream if I win the lottery ;-)

But those W116 chassis' were awesome cars...

[MBZ] 1980 300SD

2005-10-05 Thread BillR
Kevin - I'd like to tempt you to do that. You could retire the engine and
transmission to Florida for my ailing 1981 300SD...
Good body and interior, no engine and [probably ]a weak transmission. I've
spent $3k thus far and still no usable engine.

After letting my son drive my 1980 300SD for three months, I needed to use
it. On right hand turns, there is a metal sliding on metal noise, and when
you straighten out, a metallic clang, with occasional metallic pops. I'm
thinking it's a bad axle or CV joints from a 17 year old driving it like
it's a sportscar. There seems to be a lot of play in the axles. How much
side to side movement should there be, or is there another way to diagnose
these. My only other experience was with a 1968
VW Bus. The noises seem similar, even if that was over 20 years ago.
Also, how expensive a fix is this? This is the one needing new glow plugs,
among other issues, and I'm about to throw in the towel on it.
If the engine and trany were not so strong, I'd dump it.

Thanks for any help.

Kevin
