Scott - Sorry to hear about your misfortune. I can't vouch for any repairs that Odemer performs as I've always done my own but it is nice having a parts source for these old antennas. First, lubricate the antenna with some silicone spray lub -- if it's gotten dry and dirty, the telescoping sections can drag to the point the motor shuts off too soon. Re: [MBZ] Antenna sticking
the mast stopped going all the way down on my 300E during the winter, not sure why, or just a combo of winter grime and dried out lube. I use the radio very little by the way. The mast was up about 4-5 inches, so I really washed it down well with WD40, and as it's so thin, after applying it several times, enough ran down and I guess cleaned it out by way of washing it. WD40 isn't a lube, so after I sprayed it down, which by the way got it running smoothly again, I gave it a wipe down using some of those Mercedes lube pads made for that purpose. I've had no problems with it since. Ed 300E 2009/2/22 Jim Cathey j...@windwireless.net So, is there a way, short of disassembling, to help out a radio antenna that has stopped going all the way down? Re: [MBZ] Antenna sticking
It depends on what kind of mast you have. There were some that the nylon tail was toothed on, which would have to be replaced if the teeth are worn or damaged, or the other style, which used a more or less smooth nylon tail that the friction wheel grabbed between it and a pinch roller. If you open it up and find you have the one with the smooth tail, first check the pinch roller and spring to make sure they're working properly, then take the antenna tail and feed it in 180 degrees from the direction it had previously would around the drum on. That presents a smooth tail for the friction wheel to get a grip on, and it will once again work as intended. The friction wheel sort of knurls the side it contacts due to the ridges that are machined into it, so the side opposite the wheel is more or less untouched. Re: [MBZ] Antenna sticking
I am pretty sure that Hirschmann aerials of that vintage use a toothed cord, the problem is a lack of maintenance (of which we are all guilty because it is one of those things that only gets attention when they play up), what Dan said was pretty right, even for the toothy variety. There is a roller that presses the cord onto the drum and with a lack of lube the roller stops rolling and as a result a flat spot wears on it, thus you loose tension and the aerial does not work 100%. Disassembly will tell the story. Stripping down an Hirschy aerial is not that hard and you will find out if the aerial mast is working well. There used to be a kit available to fix the roller problem. Another thing that goes wrong is that the plastic tab inside the drum breaks off. Whenever I come across a Hirschy aerial in a wreck I pull it apart to see if it has a good roller in it but that is very rare. Re: [MBZ] Antenna sticking
There used to be a kit available to fix the roller problem. I actually replaced the roller in one of mine with a generic bearing-house roller. That was a large pain. This is the antenna that's now in the 250C. From the August 2001 archive of this list's predecessor: Folks, I was wondering with what you are supposed to clean and lubricate the power antenna on the 1983 300D TurboDiesel. I have heard that it is VERY important to keep the antenna clean, and lubricated with something, but with I think it's silicone, sprayed on a rag and then wiped on the extended antenna. I was able to resurrect my wife's 450SL antenna, which was very gummed up with (no doubt) residue from previous lubrication attempts. I had to remove the mast from the motor, and once apart I glugged lacquer thinner down into the mast and repeatedly extended and collapsed it. Repeated until no more goo came out, in the thinner or sticking to the mast. It took awhile. That thing was filthy nasty inside, and very sticky before the cleaning. Then reassemble. (In this case, I also had to replace the pinch roller bearing in the motor assembly, which had rusted solid. Boy, THAT was fun! A local bearing house was able to measure the pieces [I had to use a hammer to break it apart] and supply an exact replacement, down to the markings on it. [625, if I recall.] Not cheap, but WAY cheaper than another Hirschmann.) This antenna is now residing in our 250C convertible, and works great. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
