'Day after Hurricane Fran in '96, tried to fiind 5KW generator.  None
available locally.  'Called SIL in Charlotte; he bought one and met me with
it 'bout half way here (near Greensboro).  Got it home, checked it out, got
ready to hook it to my system, and started pulling on the rope to start it.
Pulled many, many times - really didn't need or want that workout.  After
several sessions of pulling and resting, disconnected the oil level safety
switch; 'started right up and ran fine.

Negative, you drove across the Million Dollar Bridge or the Fore Point
Bridge. The Casco Bay Bridge replaced the Million Dollar Bridge in '97 or '98
(I forget). I worked on it during the summer of '96, the first summer I dated
my wife.

Looks like it was '97: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casco_Bay_Bridge I should
add to the entry...
At the time it was the longest highest drawbridge in north America. We used to
pour concerte full width 300' at a time. All hands on deck, we'd start pouring
at 4am, usually quit around 1pm.

I highly recommend getting lucky at a garage sale. 4500W for $25 because
after a professional tune up and then sitting for a year it wouldn't start.
You guys on the list diagnosed it for me - the oil pan had warped just a bit
and the oil level was low. Added oil and it started on the 2nd pull. Still
have not used it for real, but very nice to know it is there, especially as
we are on a well.

So sitting around thinking about how I'd like to have a little
generator to run my sump pump.

I've always wanted something like that, a really small and light
one. Cheap would be good too. But I think that for one's first
generator you should get one that's capable of starting your
refrigerator. I have a 1600W Coleman that will run ours, or
our freezer, and a couple lights, a TV, the fan on the fireplace,
etc. I've got many more, much bigger ones, but that is the one
that saved our bacon, literally. The bigger ones allow for much
more convenience, but you never forget your first time...

The paperwork that came with my sump pump (this summer) was advertising a
battery backup module. Not sure how long it would run on battery -- didn't
say. Your experience is making me question the wisdom of not having that
convenience.

[MBZ] Backup generator

2008-12-12 Thread Curt Raymond
So sitting around thinking about how I'd like to have a little generator to run

Which at 1200 watts is no power monster but my pump will almost start (it'll
hum and move a little water but not put it up the pipe) with my 400watt
inverter so I'd think 1200 should be plenty. So far in 2 years in the house
it'd have been used once. So theres no need for something super heavy duty.
That said you'll note its sold by Homier Distributing the tool show people

Meijer (a local supermarket chain, kind of like Super Walmart) has a 45cc
Chinese genny for $150, frequently on sale for $75-100. Rated 1000 surge, 850
continuous. Two stroke, but you've probably got premix on hand, at least in the
winter. I don't know if Home Despot has anything similar. A friend bought one,
weighs about 40lb, has enough compression that it's not easy to hold it down
while you start it. We resorted to having one guy hold it down with both hands
while the other guy pulled the cord.

BTW, here's something I've been wanting to buy or build. Go to this page and
search for Pincor:

Re: [MBZ] Backup generator

2008-12-12 Thread Curt Raymond
I used my Cub today to charge the motorcycle battery I ran down this morning
and my 110ah (well thats what it was 6 years ago) marine battery which is
currently powering my laptop and DSL modem.

I ordered:
http://www.amazon.com/Eastern-Tools-Equipment-TG1200-Generator/dp/B000P9UOAC/ref=pd_cp_hi_0?pf_rd_p=413863601pf_rd_s=center-41pf_rd_t=201pf_rd_i=B000QUZEBOpf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DERpf_rd_r=1DG9EENSAE5YMFT6N89T
Based on the really nice reviews. Amazon says its shipped and should be here
Wednesday.

Keeping the fridge cold is not a concern, its below freezing now and could drop
into the single digits tomorrow night. I'd just like to have the little genny
for a few more lights and to keep the batteries topped. I do like using the
batteries, the gentle hum of the inverter is the only way we know anything is
up.

I've been thinking about the Pincor generators for awhile and this will
probably make me try to score one, the Cub's 7hp Kohler uses remarkably little
fuel (gallon and a half an hour maybe) so I think this would work well. It'd
also be nice at camp where somebody stole our last generator...
