On rereading it I see what you mean. I like to
watch a lot of auto racing and downhill skiing and
have seen on OTA broadcasts a lot of pixilating,
more in the background then the center of focus. I
guess I will give it a try and see how it goes.

What's not so good about Tablo?

One thing we haven't touched on yet gets a little technical. Tablo has some additional
hardware inside that "transcodes" the video stream from MPEG-2 to H.264. If
you're not up on your video codecs (and we don't blame you at all if that isn't the sort
of thing you think of on a regular basis), that means the video stream is converted from
one format to another.

The idea behind this is twofold, in this case: Tablo transcodes the video so
that it takes up less room on the hard drive when you're recording, and so that
it requires less bandwidth when you're streaming the video to various devices
in your home.

Transcoding in and of itself is not a bad thing. But the downsides to this?
First is that there's a noticeable lag time when you change to a different and
it starts the transcoding process. We're talking 10 or 15 seconds or so. If
you're an impatient channel flipper (ahem), you'll absolutely notice this.

The other thing is that video quality can definitely suffer a bit, even though
H.264 is supposed to help with that. It'll depend on your network and what
devices you're streaming to — there can be a lot of variables here. Just be
prepared, is all we're saying.

So I don't know if they have fixed it or if it isn't that noticeable.

Just wanted to get another opinion.

Pluto TV is an app that lets you watch free TV, too. It’s got a lot of old

a slight picture problem in fast action shots so I
was wondering about that.

How does youtubeTV get there? I had assumed it ran on your interwebz.

I gave up on live TV due to poor quality digital signal and cost of service for
cable shows. I had intended to swap to the DSL folks back many years ago and
took the crimecast box back to their store. The fellow behind the desk was

4GB or 400GB?
If I only needed 4gb/mo, I wouldn't buy it from Comcast.
(8 years ago, I paid $40/mo for Virgin Wireless datacard with 4GB cap, and
cellular data cost a lot more back then)

Is Comcast/Spectrum your internet provider too?
I have a client that has them. When he cut the cord and started using
streaming services
Commiecast put a cap on data to 4 gigs a month. If you go over they
"Offer" up grade data
service for a price ( and it ain't cheep). So they penalize you for
dropping their tv service.

I’m looking forward to stopping in at the local cable company store this week

You know, short of not using the Internets, it’s going to happen one way or
another. They’ll be sorely disappointed with my data, as the extent of my TV
viewing is usually a Family Guy or Perry Mason off the DVR before I nod off. If
it wasn’t for the spouse the TVs around here would be paperweights.

2019-10-13 Thread Larry Turner via Mercedes
speaking pf DVR, one thing I dislike about  Dish is the format they use
to record stuff on the Recorder.  I'm told there is no way tp convert the
Dish format to anything that can be used on more traditional formats.
I like to record some stuff (like LeMans) but unless I am committed to
Dish, keeping recordings is not likely.  Other than that, Dish has been
pretty good except for the ocassional streaming interruptions which are
usually less than 2 or 3 seconds.   When it gets wiindy we often have
interruptions - I assume the dish is shaking or something.

Has anyone had luck with OTA (over the air) antenna's?
Maps of local coverage looks promising.

2019-10-13 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Rick,

YouTube TV is a subscription service that costs $50/month. It carries many of
the major cable networks as well as your local stations, at least the network
affiliates. You use a streaming device like an AppleTV, Roku or Amazon
Firestick to access it on your TV or computer using their application.

The DVR function is built into their application. For instance, I just searched
for Family Guy and told it I want all new episodes recorded for the season. You
can also watch a fair amount of stuff on demand as well.

I bought a refurbished “Tablo” OTA DVR box for about $75. Using an HDTV antenna
and an external hard drive, it will record any of our OTA stations for me. It
has a subscription service that’s $5/month for the scheduling, which you would
need for the DVR function. Without the hard drive you can still watch OTA
stations, but not record them.

did not seem to be any that had DVR.  I also only have a 12mbs
connection here which normally runs about half that speed or even down
to 1-2 when everyone in the house is streaming and gaming.

We also looked at Philo, which has all of the “lifestyle” channels, many of

Our local cable providers don’t bother with “retention” until you bail. When we
had Verizon they would send you to someone that had the ability to deal to get
you to stay. Since Frontier and Comcast came to town their attitude seems to be
“Good luck, it’s been nice, we’ll see you.”

Since I’ll go to the store and see someone in person it might be different, but
over the phone that’s been the attitude. I’ll report back what they do.

[MBZ] Cord Cutting

2019-10-13 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Our cable company (Comcast/Spectrum) is about to bend us over the back of a
chair since our ”promotional” pricing is over so it’s time to cut the cord. Did
a lot of research and found that between a Tablo OTA DVR and YouTube TV we can
get nearly everything she enjoys watching for about $50/month compared to over
$125/month when prices go up. Internet access costs me about $50/month.

I’m looking forward to stopping in at the local cable company store this week
and handing them their boxes back.
