[MBZ] Door Closing Assist Fun
Well, I decided to go all in on the door closing assist issue today. Earlier in the week I bought a used door latch on eBay for $30 shipped that had the suspect microswitch. I got the latch unfastened and dropped down into the door, but without taking the rear window slide out, it's not coming out. I'm not about to start dinking with the window, so I am attempting repairs in-situ. Here's what I found: Microswitch was not bad. It's mounted (plastic riveted) into a housing that clips onto the latch mechanism. The housing is broken, which allowed the microswitch to just sort of hang in place. This being the case, it wouldn't make proper mechanical contact with the mechanism, hence the reason for the closing assist not working. Since the switch is plastic riveted to the housing with the broken clips, I can't just replace the switch, I have to swap the whole housing out with the replacement. Not a big deal, however, I will have to splice it into the existing microswitch harness, as the connector has three wires going into it, as my latch has another microswitch on this circuit for the door lock. Looks like the driver's door has the additional lock circuit (the used latch I got was from a left rear door. I'm currently taking a quick lunch break then I'm heading back out to splice the new switch into the harness. Once that is completed I'll reassemble everything and hopefully it will work. Getting the latch assembly loose was not a fun undertaking, but it wasn't so bad that I anticipate problems getting it all back together More as I know it. Re: [MBZ] Door Closing Assist Fun - Follow Up
Done. Had to really fight to get everything back together. Reassembled twice and the mechanism locked up. Figured out that the pin from the back of the door handle lock cylinder wasn't getting where it needed to be, and was pressing up against the mechanism and locking it up. Once I got that sorted out it went back together without incident. There is a plastic cover over the latch mechanism on the W140, and getting this back in place over everything in the blind wasn't fun, but fortunately it's plastic, so it was pliable enough to move around and eventually end up where it was supposed to. So now I finally have door closing assist on the driver's door! Whoopee! The doors on the coupe are simply massive slabs of metal, and not only are they heavy, but having to slam the door to get it to close is an almost jarring experience. Having the closing assist makes it so much nicer, and quieter, too. Gotta take Kitty for her shots now. I'm sure she'll be pleased. Thanks, Wilton. (To me) there is nothing more rewarding than: 1.) Fixing something that would cost the average consumer a heck of a lot of money for very little (MB microswitch = $140, used microswitch plus other parts that came with the latch assembly = $32), and; 2.) Having everything on my car working as it's intended to. I've gotten a lot of crap about it over the years, but it does matter to me if the lamp in the ash tray is out, even if I don't smoke, for example. Everything should work and be functional as it was intended to be. What's the point of having it if it doesn't? Last thing I have to deal with is the lumbar bladder. Not sure why it doesn't inflate, but I'll be finding out. Dan On Nov 3, 2013, at 4:48 PM, WILTON wrote: ATTABOY! Have you tried resetting the pump? That's the first step. Since both don't work my first suspicion would be the pump. If one doesn't work then there is most likely a leak or the adjustment thing is leaking. Dan On Nov 3, 2013, at 6:14 PM, Kaleb C. Easy. Pull the fuse. Could be 3, 9 or 11. Check the card in the fusebox. Both the PSE and central locking pumps have timers in them that time them out if they run on (due to a leak, typically.) The only way to reset he timer is to remove power from the system, e.g., pull the fuse or disconnect the battery. Dan On Nov 3, 2013, at 6:46 PM, Kaleb C. Striplin wrote: No, how do you do that?
