[MBZ] Frozen door lock - wt*?

2014-12-04 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
My W123 300TD driver's door lock (naturally) freezes up every morning. How
would I go about addressing this issue? Is it possible that the worn out
window glass scraper is allowing moisture (condensate) to drip down and
freeze? Or is there a blocked drain preventing moisture from leaving the
handle? What's the diagnosis progression for this issue?

Is the little door on the keyway still functioning properly? It's
supposed to keep moisture out.

You can also spray the lock with liquid lock oil (NOT WD-40).

Part of the problem is that it's never going to dry out if you keep pouring
water into it.

I doubt very much your window scraper is bad or letting water get to the lock.

You need to remove the door handle (easy 30 second job), take it inside and get
it good and warm, then clean the lock cylinder as Craig suggested.

Better yet, swap door handles between driver's and passenger door. They're
interchangeable, and it's like having a brand new handle and lock on your
driver's door.

So what you're saying is that water is TRAPPED inside the lock and cannot
escape even after 5 straight rain-free?

If the little door covering the key hole is missing, would that allow
moisture to penetrate?

If I swapped handles and the problem persisted what would that tell me?

And when it is dry, spray some lock eze into it.

I suspect your little door is bent, bad or broken.

When it rained sideways then froze hard a couple weeks ago, my 240D
would not unlock because the vacuum had leaked down, so the trunk
lock would not open everything, the passenger door lock was not
replaced with the original when an incompetent body shop replaced the
door, so the key does not work in it and the drivers door lock got
water in it and was frozen.

I solved the problem by warming the lock with my hands.

Yes, in a sense. Even a small amount of moisture in the right place in the lock
cylinder can freeze and prevent it from moving.

Yes.

That the passenger door lock has moisture in it as well.

Yes but true. Use an alcohol based de-icer that displaces water, then use
lock ease.
Obviously the door flap should be dealt with or not. I never bothered,
just carry some lock de-icer with me or don't lock door overnight. You
shouldn't have theft issues where you are?!

I suspect your little door is bent, bad or broken.

When it rained sideways then froze hard a couple weeks ago, my 240D
would
not unlock because the vacuum had leaked down, so the trunk lock would
not
open everything, the passenger door lock was not replaced with the
original
when an incompetent body shop replaced the door, so the key does not
work

in it and the drivers door lock got water in it and was frozen.

I solved the problem by warming the lock with my hands.

Part of the problem is that it's never going to dry out if you keep

pouring water into it.

I doubt very much your window scraper is bad or letting water get to
the

lock.

You need to remove the door handle (easy 30 second job), take it inside
and get it good and warm, then clean the lock cylinder as Craig
suggested.

Better yet, swap door handles between driver's and passenger door.
They're interchangeable, and it's like having a brand new handle and
lock

on your driver's door.

Did it ever occur to you that adding water to the frozen lock is

Re: [MBZ] Frozen door lock - wt*?

2014-12-04 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Freezes up or gets stuck? I've been in Maryland for a week where its not been
below freezing.
I'd suggest pulling it out which is actually pretty easy. The door handle is
held with 3 screws one of which is inside the door and requires pulling the
inner panel. You'll need to be able to turn the key to get the attachment from
the lock to the latch out so don't wait until its stuck full time.
Getting the lock cylinder out requires pushing out a roll pin, its pretty easy.
Then pull the cylinder, do it inside a plastic bag, the lock wafer springs
might *sproing* when you pull it apart. Carefully push out each wafer with a
small screwdriver, theres a spring under there, be careful. Wash each wafer
down with carb cleaner, do the same for the spring. KEEP THEM IN ORDER. Then
wash down the lock cylinder. Reassemble with some of this:
http://www2.dupont.com/Consumer_Lubricants/en_US/products/lock_lubricant.html
which is the best lock lube I've ever used. Done yearly your locks won't freeze
even if the little door is missing... BTDT

I love 123 door locks because they're easy to warm with a torch. When I was
driving Hammie the '83 240D the first time around I used to do that almost
every day all winter... Second time I got it the driver's lock was stuck, I
took it apart and all the schmutz I'd put in it the first time to keep it
working had frozen into a waxy goo. I had to cut the cylinder apart...
This whole discussion reminds me I need to take the trunk lock on the Jetta

on the keyhole flap issue and see if the PS door handle works below
freezing. If so, the easiest solution is to swap door handles.

My W123 300TD driver's door lock (naturally) freezes up every morning.
 How

would I go about addressing this issue?

1) Clean it out, and use correct water-repellant lube.

2) Make sure it has a viable keyhole flap.

3) Make sure the thin plastic rain hat inside the door over the lock
is still there. I've found the shards in a lot of doors I've opened.
