That would be visible on video as a rocking of the background.

The cost of such a system might exceed the cost of repair of the bumper,
although I would take great satisfaction in getting the miscreant to pay
for repairs.

I've got a spare front bumper waiting to be installed on my cabriolet, so I
can scavenge the impact strip from the old bumper that is coming off that
car. Then I will need to repaint a white impact strip to a dark blue, this
is a good excuse to try the "$50 roller paint job" method.

The one I have in the front window has 1080, and a 120 degree field of
view, which covers both front side windows and forward..

Impact sensor trigger won't get you the whole story. you want to record
the other vehicle that recklessly backs or drives into you, real time...
much more powerful if you are lucky, if it takes pics of the driver and
occupants, for later ID.

I have one I bought on some special, an Anker of some kind, you can set motion
detection on it while the car is parked and it will record when it sees
something moving. It has 3 sensitivities to adjust how it triggers. It’s a
pretty nice unit, has WiFi and an app to download vid right to your phone.
You’d have to have one aimed in the right direction but it has a pretty wide

Speaking of my E300, I think I need to get some photos of the entire car
and post them and you all tell me if you think its even worth me
replacing the door and getting it painted.  I did notice today it did
damage the area behind the rear door and the wheel arch.

It usually takes two people, but you should take a voltmeter and

battery + and the starter motor's center post (not the cable or
the nut) and have somebody hit the starter. You don't want to
see very much voltage at all. Repeat the test with the battery

Any significant voltage means you have a wiring problem.
A volt is too much. Half a volt is probably too much.

You combine these results with the battery voltage itself
(measured between the posts) under the same conditions.
It shouldn't drop too much, if it goes to 10V it's bad.

yes, Ohms = Volts / Amps, Amps = Volts/Ohms, Volts = Ohms/Amps

You need to measure the resistance of the cable, then measure the
voltage difference from the same points when current is flowing.

No, not really.

You need to measure the resistance of the cable, then measure the
voltage difference from the same points when current is flowing.

The difficulty there, of course, is that you're not going to have
equipment that can reliably measure resistances that low.

I use a clamp-on DC ammeter for that.

Another (cheaper) option is to acquire a shunt resistor and put
it in series with the battery. Then measure voltage across that.
They're a precise high-current wire with a known low resistance
expressly made for measuring high currents with a voltmeter.

 No, not really.

I figure if the starter cables are of proper factory size and they
get hot, you're drawing serious AMPS, and need to look to the power
consumer, not the power source, for your trouble. Seized starter,
as mentioned by others, would be my first guess. (2nd guess would
be an electrical short inside the starter)

Kinda a catch-22. If you spend the money for a decent clamp-on DC
ammeter, you have acquired a device that is adequate to measure low
ohms. Still, I like DC clamp-on's, but consumer grade ones are flaky.
Adding enough ohms to measure the resistance with a Harbor Freight
multimeter causes it' own problems and in practice is a real PITA...

You can get close enough with a cheap multimeter to diagnose basic
problems - maybe +- 5 amps.

Maybe but I doubt it. In that case ice had built up under the counterweight. In
the morning I removed that ice and all was well.

I put the charger on for about an hour this afternoon, the 4amp setting
produced less than 2 amps on the meter. I don't think the battery was
discharged significantly.
When I tried it in the (relative) warmth of the day the starter turned but
sounded HORRIBLE. All grinding and nasty. I think maybe its lost a bearing.
Anyway its good to know it'd probably start if I wanted it to. I'll park on the
hill at work on Monday since theres no way I'll be able to get in to the Indy
until Tuesday at the earliest.
That'll also allow me to get the starter from Rusty...

A solenoid click followed by dimming lights and warm or hot battery
cables is a locked up starter motor, the typical failure mode on these
engines. I've replaced two so far (different cars) -- they crank slow

There is no alternative to replacement.

You're really going to enjoy getting to the starter on that thing in the
snow. Don't recall mine having neutral safety, so it's probably just a low
battery. Battery being less than a month old doesn't mean anything anymore,
unfortunately.

Check the cables, make sure they're good and tight, and that you have a good
ground. There's a lot less juice required to run lights than the glow plugs
and the starter capable of spinning a 20:1 engine.

'85 190D won't start. Specifically it won't crank. I hit the key, the
 solenoid clicks and nothing happens.
I don't think its the battery: A. The battery is less than a month old and B.
The lights come on and look normal and C. A jump with a boostpack didn't
 change the symptoms at all.
I can tell you that 3 of us pushing it in the snowy flat driveway can't go
 fast enough to start it...

The security guys at work have a Jeep Liberty and say they'd give me a tug if
I had a strap. I own two straps, they're safely home in my garage. I called a
friend who is going to Wal-Mart for me...

Anyway I'd wack the starter with a hammer (I've had that work on American
cars before) if I knew where it was... Pray tell where is the starter on this
 beastie?

Re: [MBZ] GRRRRR!

2007-12-14 Thread Peter Frederick
Drivers' side, and you won't be able to whack it, it's buried up there.

Most likely it's seized, typical failure on those diesel starters, they
lock up solid. Changing it is horrible -- supposedly you can get the
old one out and the new one in, but on the one I worked on the old one
fell out on me when I got the solenoid wire loose (no way to reach it
on the gasser from above, diesel may be better) and I didn't see how it
came through. Never did get it back in without taking an engine mount
out, which I recommend.

On an '85 190D it isn't too hard to get the starter out, or check the
connections. Apart from the lower bolt the rest is accessible from
the drivers side top, after removing the air filter box complete. A
190E is (was) a lot more difficult as the cruise actuator is in front
of the starter and it is under the fuel injection stuff on the hard
to remove manifold. Not fun in the cold, but most is doable from
under the hood.

The lights come on and look normal

I always open the door and then hit the key while watching
the dome light. If it goes out, it's either the battery or
the wiring there to.

Curt-on my 240D-I had to whack the starter-on it, it's passenger side down
low half way back. Got it stuck it in the parking garage at work-no wrecker
could really tow it out. Magic hammer worked.

God luck.
