Depends on the state - in Wisconsin kids are allowed in bars. In Indiana, they
are not. In fact, they're so anal about it in Indiana that if there is a bar
in a restaurant there has to be a wall dividing the bar from the dining room.

And you can't buy alcohol in Indiana on Sundays, either. Stupid.

Re: [MBZ] Hendrik and Co coming to the US of A in June A BIG THANK YOU

2010-02-23 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310
Caveat: All that follows can differ from state to state and even county
to county. Kids in bars - depends on the bar (and county, state).
There are many family-friendly establishments that serve alcohol as well
as food. Generally a bar that only serves alcohol will frown upon
non-paying underage customers (big fines and potential loss of license
if the kid gets a drop, no matter if provided by Mom or Pop).

So, if you'd like a beer or bottle of wine, that's a different liquor
license (usually), easier to find at restaurants. If you need a
Scotch, fewer choices but still many restaurants that have a bar
'attached' and can bring that scotch to your table for a meal with the
family.

Sorry I cannot help with recommending any good brands of Scotch, I'd
venture to guess that anything you can find in Australia can be found
here - maybe if you real off a few choices some one can chime in and let
us know. Beer - already a hot thread topic - almost as bad as an Oil
Thread - I generally stick with local micro-brews where ever I go,
usually more pricey but always more interesting!

Hope this helps,
Max

Not sure how long we will stay in Vegas, that will be towards the end

Have done a little bit of research, mainly for kid stuff.
Hard Rock Hotel seems to be worth checking out for music memorabilia.
Accommodation seems to be pretty cheap.

Again, that varies from state to state... in Oregon tavern and pub
are not legal terms, I don't think; a bar serves primarily alcohol,
but is required to also serve food (although many skirt that
requirement by having no kitchen, instead offering a diverse selection
of microwaveable burritos and soggy prepackaged sandwiches); a
restaurant serves primarily food, but can also offer a full bar
menu. Many restaurants have a license to serve beer and wine only, not
hard liquor.

Sort of. Most restaurants with a wine license will generally allow you to
bring your own bottle, but charge a $10-15 corking fee. Even then, if you do
the math, it's cheaper to bring your own and know what you're getting rather
than rely on the distributor the restaurant works with.

Not a good idea to do that with low end wine, though. If the wait staff knows
wine at all, they'd probably see through it and treat you like a cheapskate
because of it.

Hendrik, I've had smokers for good friends all of my life; you can be one,
too - a good friend, that is. You're right, though, I won't be smoking,

Sorry the Missus was writing, this was supposed to be just a simple post
to say thanks for all the replies, unfortunately I am too busy/too many
beers to reply to every response but I will get there.
The response from you all has been fantastic - it reinforces our
understanding that Americans are very hospitable people.
We look forward to meeting as many of you as possible for a bbq a
beer/perhaps a smoke (except for Wilton).
Please keep the suggestions coming forward as to how to experience your
country it's people.

Hi Hendrik -
Welcome to USA ! IMO riding a train is a great experience. But
your plans will still require a car/taxi/public transp. You lose a
lot of flexibility when traveling by trains are they just are not as
regular or frequent as they are in Europe. If it were me, I'd use the
train for long distances but plan on renting a car when you want to
visit museums and the other attractions you'd like to see. Having the
freedom to be on your own time table is invaluable.

The weather in the parts of US you'll be visiting in June can vary
greatly so you may need to bring layers of clothing that can come off
when the temps go up. It's still early enough in the summer season to
have some cold surprises.

The Gun shops await! Yu might consider Cabela's. www.cabelas.com has
a listing of all their stores - hopefully one will be near your
route

Congrats to your daughter! She played an obviously outstanding part in
helping the team win! ;-) Good luck on the travels and her
competitions.

How long are you planning to spend in Vegas again, H F? There's a
lot to do there that's interesting and educational for kids other than
the casinos (where children, by law, aren't allowed anywhere near the
gaming tables and machines---but I suppose since gambling is legal in
Oz you won't be much interested anyway in showing the young-uns how
quickly mum and dad can lose all their funny American money). There
is a great natural history museum just outside of town with lots of
dinosaur bones. The Hoover Dam is an easy day trip and not only
educational but just an impressive sight to behold---I think it's the
largest single piece of poured concrete in the world. There is an
excellent car museum hidden inside the Imperial Palace casino. Just
walking on the Strip can be a lot of fun---you can marvel at the
bizarre architecture of the casinos, people-watch, and go inside for a
drink when it gets too hot.

I stayed in the Hard Rock in '07, its a really good hotel, very nice rooms.

The casino is INSANE at night... Maybe not the best choice when traveling with
kids. Its also about 1/2 mile (1 block(!)) off the strip so you'll either be
spending a lot of money in cabs or hoofing it a lot.

One night in the casino my roommate was approached by a woman wearing nothing
but a fishnet dress and shamrock stickers over her naughty bits. Wanted to go
up to our room and party. He said she was probably in her middle 50s...

Somebody was telling me the other day they saw a screaming deal at Bally's, I
think it was ~$60/night. Thats right on the strip, great location with most of
the big name hotels in walking distance.

Your story just gave me a good laugh.
Hendrik I aren't the gambling types we figured the laws would be the
same as here - no kids in casinos. You have to be 18 over here to go
into casinos/pubs.

Our son Zak is the one who wants to go to Vegas - he's only 9
In his words 'I wanna see how they built a million dollar city in the
middle of the desert'.
One of friends went to Vegas a few years ago he just loved it, he had
the best time.

Will definitely look at staying at the Hard Rock - I'll go on the website.

Hendrik would like to know if you can take kids into bars in the US, the
best beer for drinking for me it's good brands of scotch.

Not sure how long we will stay in Vegas, that will be towards the end of
our trip.

Have done a little bit of research, mainly for kid stuff.
Hard Rock Hotel seems to be worth checking out for music memorabilia.
Accommodation seems to be pretty cheap.
Thanks for all your suggestions, it you have any more ideas we'd greatly
appreciate them.

Resist going to Circus Circus (if it's still there). It may sound like
a fun place for kids but it's old and worn out.

I stayed in the Hard Rock in '07, its a really good hotel, very nice
 rooms.

The casino is INSANE at night... Maybe not the best choice when
traveling with kids. Its also about 1/2 mile (1 block(!)) off the
strip so you'll either be spending a lot of money in cabs or hoofing
 it a lot.

One night in the casino my roommate was approached by a woman wearing
nothing but a fishnet dress and shamrock stickers over her naughty
bits. Wanted to go up to our room and party. He said she was probably
 in her middle 50s...

Somebody was telling me the other day they saw a screaming deal at
Bally's, I think it was ~$60/night. Thats right on the strip, great
location with most of the big name hotels in walking distance.

Might have to check on that sometime.

If you get to Okie Acres (the Claremore gun museum is amazing!), a
 little
West (90 miles) in OKC you can see the 45th infanty museum - IIRC, they do
have a bazooka or two (I'll ask my son - he'd remember) as well as the
 original Willie and Joe drawings.
20 miles South of OKC is the Oklahoma Natural History Museum with the
 worlds
 largest dinasaur skeleton on display.
