Yes that was great fun, as was scrounging old bicycle tire inner tubes

When I was a kid we would collect them and put them in the gravel
driveway or side road and let the cars run over them awhile. You
have to get them when the husks are all brown and rotted, the green
husks are like bowling balls. My granddaddy, who probably had some
sort of OCD, would then spend hours going at them with a hammer and
whatever else to get a small bowlfull of them, which my grandmother
would use to make cookies that vanished immediately.

Re: [MBZ] Juglans, wuz: Re: Nice 1984 300CD

2015-03-19 Thread WILTON via Mercedes
Having been out of the airplane for 3 years while in engineering school at
NC State U, I was required to attend B-52 combat crew training a second time
at Atwater, CA, from July through Oct 1971 (first time July through Oct
1962).
Across the street from where we lived in Atwater were large English walnut
and almond orchards that appeared to have been "abandoned." Grass and weeds
had fairly well taken them over, and we never saw anybody there; coupla For
Sale signs were posted on the property. Coupla days before departing in
late Oct for my assignment at Kincheloe, MI, I walked over into the orchards
and found the ground covered with beautiful almonds and walnuts, some of
them obviously there for several days. Late the afternoon before leaving,
SWMBO, the 3 children and I went into the orchards and gathered up a
significant box full of each. Just before we left for MI the next day, our
land lady came to wish us well and to present us a gift - another
significant box each of the nuts. I tried to tell her that I was very
appreciative, but we had scrounged (swiped/stolen) some from the orchards
across the street the day before and that she should keep them for herself.
She replied, "That's where I got these! Here, please take 'em I picked them
up for you. The land has been sold; they're ripping out all of the trees
and gonna build houses there." I thanked her profusely, put 'em in the car
and drove away with well over a bushel of each. We shelled and enjoyed
almonds and English walnuts for months.

BTW, in July of '72. when I went back through there for D-model (B-52D,
that is) difference training en route to war in SE Asia, all of the trees
were gone and the area was nearly filled with houses

There is a new blasting option on the market which preforms better than
soda.

It's called "Dustless Blasting" and the results are pretty impressive.

http://www.dustlessblasting.com/automotive.html This link should take you
to information and some video samples of how it works.

I was impressed.

And black walnuts cost twice as much because of this and the fact
that the nut does not neatly come out whole once the shell is
cracked. There is a processing plant in the Ozarks that has a secret
way to mass-crack black walnuts and sort shells from the nuts, so
they are really cleaning up..

Yes, that is Hammons. they also sell ground shells for shell
blasting your bundts.

And black walnuts cost twice as much because of this and the fact that the
nut does not neatly come out whole once the shell is cracked. There is a
processing plant in the Ozarks that has a secret way to mass-crack black
walnuts and sort shells from the nuts, so they are really cleaning up..

So, is there a difference between the eastern and western varieties?

--R

there is no western variety. Eastern Black Walnut, Juglans Nigra
or the carpathian walnut, aka english walnut, persian walnut, etc.
Juglans Regia

Carpathian walnuts are grown in Kollyfornia. They try to make
believe it is the only walnut. Black walnuts are way better tasting.
