Re: [MBZ] Juglans, wuz: Re: Nice 1984 300CD
Having been out of the airplane for 3 years while in engineering school at NC State U, I was required to attend B-52 combat crew training a second time at Atwater, CA, from July through Oct 1971 (first time July through Oct 1962). Across the street from where we lived in Atwater were large English walnut and almond orchards that appeared to have been "abandoned." Grass and weeds had fairly well taken them over, and we never saw anybody there; coupla For Sale signs were posted on the property. Coupla days before departing in late Oct for my assignment at Kincheloe, MI, I walked over into the orchards and found the ground covered with beautiful almonds and walnuts, some of them obviously there for several days. Late the afternoon before leaving, SWMBO, the 3 children and I went into the orchards and gathered up a significant box full of each. Just before we left for MI the next day, our land lady came to wish us well and to present us a gift - another significant box each of the nuts. I tried to tell her that I was very appreciative, but we had scrounged (swiped/stolen) some from the orchards across the street the day before and that she should keep them for herself. She replied, "That's where I got these! Here, please take 'em I picked them up for you. The land has been sold; they're ripping out all of the trees and gonna build houses there." I thanked her profusely, put 'em in the car and drove away with well over a bushel of each. We shelled and enjoyed almonds and English walnuts for months. BTW, in July of '72. when I went back through there for D-model (B-52D, that is) difference training en route to war in SE Asia, all of the trees were gone and the area was nearly filled with houses Wilton - Original Message - From: "Craig via Mercedes" To: "Mercedes Discussion List" Sent: Wednesday, March 18, 2015 8:12 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] Juglans, wuz: Re: Nice 1984 300CD On Wed, 18 Mar 2015 09:48:55 -0500 Curly McLain via Mercedes wrote: >So, is there a difference between the eastern and western varieties? > >--R there is no western variety.
