Re: [MBZ] Lithium batteries

2021-05-14 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
I read the website a little more and it seems they do have charge
management hardware built in. So that makes the need for a special
charger a little puzzling. If the car alternator is OK, why isn't my old
8A 12V plug-in charger OK?

Lithium batteries can be safely discharged lower than lead acid. Lead acid is
only supposed to go to 50%, IIRC lithium can go to 80% or maybe a little less.

I guess these batteries include the electronics to manage the charging?
And discharging? You can't allow them to get too low either.

In aircraft the continuous drain capacity is also a concern - you want
navigation and communications if the alternator dies before you get to the
ground. The lithiums are more than twice the cost, but weight is less than
a fourth (VERY significant) and they seem to be expected to last 6 years in
use instead of the lead acid's 5 years expected lifespan. They also have to
provide spacers for the battery box in certificated aircraft. I will be
using them in the experimentals I'm working on.

Re: [MBZ] Lithium batteries

2021-05-14 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I'm seeing that in the off grid solar community a lot lately. The extended
lifespan of lithium is supposed to provude considerable savings over lead acid.
Unfortunately I guess at least some lithium batteries don't like extreme cold.
I just checked and the weather station in the camp says -33.5F was the minimum
temp last winter. I'm not sure lithium batteries are right for us.

While the ones you linked are absurdly expensive you're getting twice the CCA
for less than half the weight.
Looking around that site I see that to replace the 2x 100ah batteries I have
would be $1800 but would actually give me more usable power because you can
safely do a deeper discharge on lithium than on lead acid cells. I'm not going
there but it's interesting to know whats available.
