Re: [MBZ] New Snook Car!

2011-02-09 Thread Dan Penoff
In 1998 when we moved to Sheboygan Wisconsin I bought one. A prerequisite for
living in that part of the state, sort of like Texas.

The rub was that I wanted a bare-bones model, with the most basic stuff. One
color, rubber floor mats, 2WD, essentially a contractor's truck.

Had to go to Milwaukee to find one, as everything on the local dealer's lots
were 4WD 9 passenger behemoths with all the swag on them.

Sold it for a profit two years later when I moved to Port Washington and had a
60 mile round trip commute.

They found out about the oil consumption when the oil light came on just
before it was due for an oil change. I think they are doing 5Kmi oil change
intervals. It was 2.5 qts down! I don't think they are using M1 though.

What you SHOULD have done, is to keep the Ford as a back up vehicle. Big
enough and old enough to be used somewhat informally to haul whatever.
Useful when you need a vehicle while you repair one of the daily drivers
or while you look for your next car after having sold your current one
(which we KNOW you will do). AND of course, great on those miserable
winter days when it snows or rains or whatever since it is big, sits
high and has 4 wheel drive. PLUS, worth very little and not likely to
depreciate a whole lot more unless it really rusts or has some major
catastrophic failure.

We have licensed brokers here in Michigan, who are not allowed to take custody

somebody who shopped heavily for a car, then let a broker give it a try. The
broker came in about $1000 lower, and delivered the car to the buyer's driveway.
The buyer couldn't figure out why the dealer refused to come within $1000 of the

I once briefly entertained the idea of starting a business as a
buyer's agent for car shoppers who didn't want to go through the
negotiation process. The idea was to charge a flat fee, so that there
would be no conflict of interest (as there is with so-called "buyer's
agents" in real estate, who are still paid on commission), and
guarantee that I would buy the exact car the customer wanted for a
given price or less. Unfortunately there didn't seem to be any way to
do it under Oregon law without becoming a licensed dealer.

Something you all might be interested in, if you haven't heard of it:

http://carwoo.com/

You register, indicate what car you are shopping for, and dealers bid against
each other to offer you the best price.

I think for free you get three bids, you can pay a fee and you will get more
bids.

They claim to save an average of $5000 off MSRP.

Note, it's for new cars only, at the current time. I have not used it but have
heard through the grapevine that people like it.

I think most of us on this list are used-car buyers, but for those who might
want (or SWMBO wants) a new car, might be worth a try.

Subject: [MBZ] New Snook Car!

We have a new (to us) car and I still have the Mercedes. I took the list's
collective advice and traded off the Expedition for a Dodge Charger. Mrs.
Snook
is VERY happy. We thought we were going to buy a 2008 Charger SE, but we ended
up making a better deal on a 2010 Charger SXT with only 31,000 miles. It is a
VERY nice car. My wife loves it.

I was surprised about how many components are Mercedes parts - front and rear
suspension, steering column, and various other parts. The one thing that this
one doesn't have that I wished for was the 5 -speed Mercedes transmission. On
the non-hemi Chargers, the 5speed only comes with All Wheel Drive.

It was an Expedition (big sucker). I don't think we could have done better,
actually. It had 150,000 miles and the ABS light was on. Plus, we got them way
down on the Charger and my wife was a master negotiator on the trade. We
originally looked at a 2008 Charger. They wanted $16,900 (which is way too
much). We got them down to $15,000 and they offered $2500 for the Expedition.
I had a dealer friend of mine check the manheim auctions and the Expedition was
going for $3000. We couldn't make a deal on the 08 Charger for the $250 payment
my wife wanted. So, we called another dealer right from the showroom and found
a 2010 for $16,900. They started falling all over themselves to make a deal.
Finally they showed us the car we bought. They had it priced at $17,900.
Edmunds prices it at $19,000. I think that's a little high. NADA shows
$17,900. Kelly Bluebook $19,300. Also, it was a certified used. That doesn't do
anything for me immeadiately because its still under factory warranty. But, it
increases the powertrain warranty.

Anyway, they told us they would sell it for $15,900 and give us $3000 for our
Expedition. We said no. My wife was awesome. She kept saying, the payment
has to be $250 a month and we won't go longer on the loan. They got it to
within $8 and she still said no. We were there for almost 5 hours. Finally,
they ended up selling their car for $15,900 and giving us $4400 for the
expedition. I had a potential buyer for my car for $5000. But, I don't think I
could have got them down their car if I didn't have a trade.

Either way, we feel like we got a great deal. And most importantly, my wife is
happy. When she is happy, that means she won't be so eagle-eyed about my cars.
So, in other words, she has a nice car and now I can get back to my car
buying/selling fun.

Of course, but I'm willing to bet Snook's billable rate is high enough
that it's not worth it to him to deal with Craigslist tire-kickers ;)

Sounds like you got a great deal, Donald. Your wife must enjoy the
negotiation game, too, to have spent five hours at the dealer. More
power to her! With the economy like it is and new-car sales way down,
I think dealers should be lucky if they get anywhere near invoice (or
blue book on a used car).

They have two of them. The base model is 2.7L. They use it in a bunch of cheap
cars. It has lots of problems. The next step up is the 3.5L. In the early
Chargers it was rated at less then 250 Hp. But, in the last few years its
called the 3.5 High Output and is 250 HP and 250 lb/torque.

My BILs are lawyers and handle some private adoptions sometimes, the
kind that the parties wish to keep low-key. They have said these seem
to work out quite well as everyone is sorta with the program. But I
guess too there is a lot of scamming out there, Wish you the best with

I think I posted this once here already but I had a student 2 summers ago that
had a Charger v6 for a rental and we both agreed it was absolute crap.
Everything about it felt cheap, the engine was tuned for very high rpm and was
quite buzzy, the steering was soft and unresponsive.

But really it was the transmission that made us hate it, stomp on the gas, the
engine revs up and at some mystical point in the future the transmission passes
that to the ground. It was difficult to predict when that time would be... A
friend owns a v8 Charger of similar vintage (a year older I think) and its a
whole different car, different interior, better sounding engine but still the
crap transmission.

My '96 Dakota had a good, tight feeling transmission even when it had 200,000+
miles on it. When we were replacing it we test drove an '05 Dakota, forget that
POS, same complaint as above. The Ranger's transmission is great.

We have a new (to us) car and I still have the Mercedes. I took the
list's collective advice and traded off the Expedition for a Dodge
Charger. Mrs. Snook is VERY happy. We thought we were going to buy a
2008 Charger SE, but we ended up making a better deal on a 2010 Charger
SXT with only 31,000 miles. It is a VERY nice car. My wife loves it.

I was surprised about how many components are Mercedes parts - front and
rear suspension, steering column, and various other parts. The one thing
that this one doesn't have that I wished for was the 5 -speed Mercedes
transmission. On the non-hemi Chargers, the 5speed only comes with All
Wheel Drive.

Congratulations! Good choice, for you keeping the MB in particular.
:) Glad your wife is happy too, of course.

Didn't you have a baby on the way or something? Did I miss that?
