Might as well establish myself as a full fledged nutter.
On my farm we've got a little camp. The camp has an outhouse which is nearing
unusable because the hole is about full. This summer I did an experiment in
humanure. Basically you do your business in a bucket that has a layer of
sawdust in it. When you've made your deposit you cover with more sawdust. The
sawdust magically makes it not smell (for real). Once the bucket is full you
put the contents in your compost pile. 3 years later its totally composted and
free of any potentially dangerous pathogens that might have been in your gut
(as opposed to any potentially dangerous pathogens naturally present in the
soil).
As I say we've only made one experiement, my wife and I used the bucket for
about 3 days. We're working on planting trees so I figure the compost could be
put to good use...

Hi all,

This morning it was our first below freezing day in the New York City
area. This freeze followed rain and all the locks froze on our cars. Problem
is something must have snapped in the driver's side door lock of my son's
1988 190E. He said when he went to get in the lock
it wouldn't work. It turns freely both ways and doesn't work. The lock
does go up and down when the key is used on the passenger's side.

Any suggestions Is there any part I should get before taking the
panel off the door? Is the panel removal a difficult job. Any help would
be greatly appreciated again!

wondered how composting toilets actually work - never looked into them.
Chinese don't really compost either - they just dump SHO (straight human
waste) into the paddies. Unless they are using it for biogas, in which case
they use underground digesters, usually.

Hi, All.
My 87 190DT had a broken door handle lock assy. It was the one with the
alarm contacts and the very end of the door handle assembly's lock, the
tang broke off, fatigue, I think. One socket grub screw to remove and the
handle comes out. (With some wiggling). I also removed and lubricated the
actual door lock itself, thinking that 18 year old grease was like glue, it
was! Cost, at the stealers was about $150 with one key. Ouch!
Hope this helps.

You will always have battery voltage at the coil on a 4.5 ignition -- the coil
is grounded by the swtichbox and the coil itself is awyas hot.

On a direct point ignition, the coil will show battery voltage when the points
are closed and 0V when they are opened.
The resistor(s) are there to limit the current flow to save wear and tear on
the switchgear, be it points or a transistor switch.

I had a summer job working at a nearby provincial park, and part of my
job was to clean the outhouse at the trail centre. It sat on the top
of a sloped hill in the woods and looked like a normal outhouse from
topside. But walk around the side and down the steps to the back where
you'll find the access hatch. I'd have to stir-the-goo and throw a
good layer of sawdust or wood shavings on the foul mixture and it did
indeed keep the smell down. I can't remember why though.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Green Fuels Would Damage Environment, Critics

2005-11-23 Thread Tan Qu
Since you all seem to have such a keen interest in
this subject so I will chime in as someone who lived
in China for over 20 years. Human manure has always
been considered as an organic fertilizer and has been
used all along until in 1980's when the industrial
fertilizers were allowed to be imported to China. It
does pose as a health risk particularlly in southern
part of China (warm climate). A lot of people got
hepitatis through eating vegetables not thoroughly
cleaned. I remember one of technologies the government
boasted back then was a household septic system which
you can use the produced methanol gas for cooking and
the final waste for crop field or fish pond.

wondered how composting toilets actually work -
never looked into them. Chinese don't really compost
either - they just dump SHO (straight human waste)
into the paddies. Unless they are using it for
biogas, in which case they use underground
 digesters, usually.

toilets, from what I've seen are usually a sham.
They cook the uhh, deposit, down to ash which is
 then technically a toxic waste...

Composting, as I'm sure you know, happens out in
the open with air and microbes involved.

you could make biogas and, with some fiddling, use
 it like propane in
a gas engine. Biogas is very widespread on a small
 scale in India and
 China.

Human feces has been used in China as a fertilizer
 for 4,000 years.
Composting is better becuase it can kill pathogens
 if hot enough (and
compost done right can get quite hot).

Also, plenty of places sell composting toilets
 so you don't need a
 bucket. :-)

And if you want crap - diesel...mix it with the
 turkey guts in
 Carthage.

Basic composting theory, you mix nitrogen (like the human waste) with carbon
(sawdust) and the carbon takes away the smell. The mixture of the two also
composts faster that either part would individually.

Good question. The thing was smoking (could mostly see it in the headlights
of cars following at night). It wasn't black-ish smoke. And it didn't seem
blue-ish like burning oil, nor was there a burnt-oil smell, or any oil
collected in the tailpipe.

Remember, this thing is shrowded in mystery because the breakdwon occurred
while I was not around and someone else put a bunch of miles on it -
possibly someone was allowed to drive it who had little sense (girlfried,
drinking buddy? - the truth is hard to come by someitmes). Or it could be
that there was a problem with the engine when be bought it. The kid we got
it from claimed his dad replaced the engine before his death. But with 120k
on the clock, I don't see why. Maybe he put in a crap engine? Or did
improper repairs? I don't have much faith in the previous owner.

The other scenario would be its being run out of oil and driven dry of oil.
The thing was using oil shockingly fast when I drove it around, but I have
since been told that if the car sits for a long period (it sat for around a
year), it often consumes oil for a while when it is first driven again.
Also, I was told that if one fills the oil up to the full mark (which I did
repeatedly), it will burn it down fast.

A small bit of evidence in favor of the blown head gasket is the coolant
level being significantlly low (it wasn't when I was using it). I know,
inconclusive, but still evidence.

So, Marshall/others, what would be the indicators of a blown head gasket?

What would be the indicators of siezing due to lack of oil?

Some have suggested a broken timing chain. Wouldn't this be a sudden
seizing? This siezing wasn't sudden.

If that's the case, (typically speaking) is the engine in need of an
overhaul, or can the cylinder(s) affected be repaired in-car? I'm
assuming coolant in the cylinder and perhaps some pitting?

A blown head gasket (relatively rare) is almost always
