Due to the kindness of list member Tim Crone, who was willing to help set up a relay tunnel, my formicapeak.com website is back on the air. It'll (have to be) less available than before, as the path goes through more layers, but we're hoping it'll still be good enough. I guess we'll see! Re: [MBZ] OT: My website
If you aren't hosting large PDF Manuals and such, have you thought about putting it up as a WordPress blog? Basic service is free with 3 GB of space. I believe you can use your own domain name for as little as $18.00 a year. Hosted space, and personal websites have gotten *super* cheap in the last several years. You could also set it up as a Tumblr.com account, but that is typically far more pic heavy. Just a thought. have you thought about putting it up as a WordPress blog? Those things leave me cold. I want to continue to do what I have been doing, so that grep driveline *.html can be used to find things of interest. Takes about 1 second to find stuff that way. I just started using a virtual private server from peakservers, since my site has been down for a couple of years I thought I needed to get my hands dirty again. I am paying $3.50 monthly for a 100GB (or 150GB?) OpenVZ plan, with CPU/memory resources roughly comparable to my computer at home. Oh, and a static IP and 100MB link. :) There are many cheaper options, including annual, depending on needs. If you are reasonably comfortable in Linux and hosting your own server, a VPS with a static IP is a great choice - it lets you do a lot more than just host a web site, including DNS, proxy from work, playground for new OSs, etc. lowendbox.com is a good resource for super-cheap VPSs, though I got the peakservers deal from webhostingtalk.com. I see that LEB has a $10/year plan on the front page that would probably be more than sufficient for your site, if you were only going to use it to serve your static pages. Jim, if you like, I can set up a virtual domain in Apache, and spider your server content, though that would mean my downtimes are also your downtimes. Still, happy to do it, permanently or temporarily if you just want some time to look into things. That host machine is a cast-off 400 MHz G4 that we were given for free. I managed to coerce OSX 10.5 onto it, which has made that part of the hosting game trivial. It was selected because it draws only around 40W of power, and if it's going to be on 24x7... Re: [MBZ] OT: My website
How static is that IP address? Or is this just for testing purposes? It's DHCP-assigned by our ISP. No guarantee of stability at all, but I imagine that it will change infrequently, if ever. Our radio link is on 24x7, there's little reason for it to change. If it does, it'd only be the last octet anyway. Yes, it was just for testing at this time, but of course for anybody who does need to refer to the content, myself included, that's how to get there. Dealing with this is the next stage of the process. I have friends with sites already, I'm looking into linking to my site from one of them, and using a CGI script to update the link as necessary. I don't know if Google et al. will be able to index my site if I do it that way, though. Where it was before needed some special treatment in order to let it be indexed. A magic tag and a pretty-please request to Google's crawlers, and many weeks of waiting IIRC. For years I've been using staticcling.org for dynamic DNS. It's a small place, and free (as in beer) and their software in free (as in freedom). I will look into that.
