Re: [MBZ] OT: Shirley had her hip surgery

2017-07-17 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Just as a data point, my buddy in Houston (Dan bought his car) has had
both hips done, he is 55. In college he was a nationally-ranked tennis
player and on a full ride, so all that has beat his hips badly over the
years. The last one he had done maybe 5 years ago, I'm not sure it was
total or just the socket or something, but anyway he had both hips
upgraded. He is currently planning to do a Portland OR -Portland ME
cycling adventure next month, 3600 miles or so in 38? days, something
like that. He has had his bike fitted to accommodate one hip range of
motion. He has been doing 100 milers frequently these last few months,
and spent a week at Tahoe riding the mountains. He is an animal, and
says the hips let him know they are there but so far can handle it. His
fear is he will not be able to finish the ride due to the hips, but is
going to press on.

So, she probably doesn't want to hear that today, but it might be
somewhat inspirational once she gets going. He is going to set up some
sort of blog to track his adventure so I will share that once he gets going.

He has a 79 450SL in showroom condition, and had the S430 he pawned off
on Dan, so he is in the old Benz fold.

Her hip surgery was done robotically which I thought was pretty cool. They
had her up and walking the next day, and kept her going at it constantly. Not
fun, but I think it did a lot to speed her recovery.

Her Mom just had a hip done last year, and they had her up and walking the day
of surgery. She was out of the hospital a day later and walking pretty well on
her own within a week - she’s in her early 80s and pretty active.

Amazing how quickly they get people back up and walking after such a major
surgery.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Shirley had her hip surgery

2017-07-16 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Our big problem was that they gave the wife the morphine drip with the button.
She would hit the button, doze off for an hour or two, only to awaken in severe
pain because she hadn’t been medicated for two hours. Of course, hitting the
button again didn’t generate enough happy juice to even take the edge off, so
that was pretty much worthless.

After a night of lousy sleep and lots of pain, she made them take the
self-medication thing away and just give her a straight dose. That made a
significant difference in her pain management.

I haven't been in the hospital since I was about 10 years old to have my arm
rebroken/reset by an orthopedist who screwed it up when he set it. I blew
chunks all over a nun in the recovery room, for which I am sure I will pay for
in another life, no doubt.

I can’t imagine going through all this stuff myself. I would be coming unglued.

SHMBO had the right hip done about four years ago.  Her main problem (IMO) was
she was overmedicated while in the hospital (four days).  Older folks don't
metabolize stuff like the younger folks used in the studies, I believe.  My
wife started getting "better" the day she left the hospital for rehab where
they minimized the drugs.  To this day she has almost no memory of her time in
that hospital.
The physical therapy isn't fun but it's important to regain normal function.
Schedule pain meds to facilitate physical and occupational therapy.  Also don't
"baby" the operated leg or the excess stress on the "good" leg and foot can
create other problems.

Shirley's surgery was in the afternoon, so they planned to have her up
and moving yesterday. Unfortunately, she was very nauseous, was quite
dehydrated, and had low blood pressure, so they kept her in bed (better
to have her in bed than fall because she was dizzy). The physical
therapist did stop by and carefully manipulated her leg while she was
lying in the bed, so her joint was not entirely immobile yesterday.

She's still in bed today, a little better, but she's having troubles
knowing where she is. Hopefully the physical therapist will make a visit
this afternoon so she can get some more activity in.

I have had total replacement of both knees. I have heard that the recovery from
a hip replacement is much easier, which to me seems counterintuitive. Best
wishes!
