Automatic? That would be a DSG (dual sport gearbox) which is really a manual
that you don't do the shifting on. I personally don't like them but I've only
driven them in gassers.
Anyway there is a service interval (40,000 miles) on them and like most VW
autos they're very sensitive to it. They're also sensitive to having the
"proper" DSG fluid. Also getting just the right amount of fluid in is quite
important. VW have clearly made this difficult for the DIYer but folks have
figured ways around it.

So my cousin just had to spend $3k on a new tranny and some other stuff
for her 08 Golf I think it was.  Apparently the tranny is "sealed" and
in some checkup to figure out why it was not working properly her mech
somehow determined that it was pretty much burned up, fluid all black
and stinky.  Is that true, you couldn't change the fluid in those things
and somehow VW expected they would just work forever (or until the
warranty expired)?  Wow.  Is this a common problem with those things?

Or, you can just pay the dealer $400 to do it for you . . .

I do like the DSG tranny in our Diesel - seems just right, I don't know how
they tuned it so 'right'.
