Re: [MBZ] One or Two for Mr. Snook, Esq
My father lives in Biloxi Mississippi. One would think that the City Council there would be chock full of Bow Ties. But, I don't see any here. https://www.biloxi.ms.us/departments/city-council/ I went to law school at Washburn University and the President of the University always wears a bow tie. He looks good in a bow tie. http://www.washburn.edu/our-faculty/jerry-farley Interestingly the mascot of the school is the "Ichabod." It was named after Ichabod Washburn who donated money for the school. Dr. Farley looks like the Mascot. Thin and with a bow tie. Around "Chaston" we got a bunch of old fops who like to wear bowties. They seem to think it confers on them some sort of air of trustiness or gravitas or something, but in general it just makes them look like fat old dandies who are trying too hard. Some dudes can pull it off though, like my doctor, whose family has Chaston roots going way way back, so he is kinda grandfathered in on the matter. They own the paper too, so I guess that confers a bit of respectability in some way. --FT On 11/1/17 7:04 PM, Dwight Giles via Mercedes wrote: Yes I am one of the, very very few faculty who still wears a dress shirt & tie.. Re: [MBZ] One or Two for Mr. Snook, Esq
What Dwight says. Practice makes perfect. I can probably do it without a mirror, it would just take me longer. Getting everything balanced out can take a minute or two. A lot depends on the "hand", or the type of fabric the tie is made of. Don't buy cheap bow ties - they're much harder to tie and get looking nice. A high quality silk bow tie is a joy to tie and usually sets right up the first time out. Cheap polyester and synthetic fabric ties are a battle, and often won't hold a knot for any length of time. And of course, clip ons are a no-no, except maybe in formal wear. Wait - not even there, really. -D > On Nov 1, 2017, at 9:16 PM, Dwight Giles via Mercedes> wrote: > > Just keep practicing. Most people assume my 18 year old BMW is more expensive than it really is. It is also ALWAYS clean. I have an unlimited wash package so it gets washed at least twice a week. I don't want to drive a beater but I'm not totally hung up on status either. Around here a new Truck is more of a status symbol anyway. After thinking and pondering and doing the math, I think I am better off just driving my BMW. Its going to cost too much to buy a car, fix any minor issues, tag it, pay taxes, and insure it. For all of those costs, I can buy more gas. BUT, I do think a cool old Mercedes still makes a statement. So, if I found the perfect 123 diesel, I might still be interested. Two attorneys I know make more than probably any others in the State of Kansas. One is obsessed with image. He has a Lamborghini and a new S Class. He buys some top of the line car every 2 years. He also makes millions. The other one had a 10 year old Toyota Sequoia with 200,000 miles. He recently got a 2 year old Ford Explorer. He doesn't have to be flashy -- he's just very good. Cute. I agree. As dear old Dad always told me, "Dress like the CEO and people will treat you like one." Despite working in a very business casual environment, I still wear dress pants, dress shirts with French cuffs and cufflinks every day, even on Fridays ("jeans day.") Quite honestly, I'm not comfortable "dressing down" for work. -D > On Nov 1, 2017, at 3:04 PM, Floyd Thursby via Mercedes >wrote: > > Reminds me of the guy driving his Cadillac to go get a vasectomy. he says > "If I'm gonna be impotent, I want to look impotent." > > BADABOOM > > --FT ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

I know in my own experience, I have noticed differences depending on what I am wearing. I used to often stop at a store similar to your Farm and Fleet or Harbour Freight on my way back from lunch if they had something on sale that I wanted. When I wore a jacket and tie, people in blue collar clothing would step out of the way for me in aisles. If I was wearing much more casual clothing, they did not defer to me. I guess the tie was a visual clue that I was someone important? Our world has become much more casual in the past 20 years or more. Many people who dressed up for work do not anymore. A suit and tie has become much less common and thus is noticed. Re: [MBZ] One or Two for Mr. Snook, Esq
It's this 99 E300 dizzel I bought for $500. I bought some parts for it, and a new wheel tire, so I'm up to maybe $600 or a bit more now. It's throwing some codes that suggest EGR and glow plug(s), which isn't such a big deal. It starts and runs a bit rough but I think it would be easily sortable. Decent shape otherwise though it has been salvaged or wrecked like 3 times. I'm thinking this car and a AAA membership and you'd be OK, once it gets sorted on the codes issues. --R On 11/1/17 10:08 AM, Donald Snook via Mercedes wrote: Kaleb has a $500 car to sell? She kept it up in good shape, it was sitting under a carport so out of the weather mostly. She had it repainted at some point after a storm knocked down some branches or something and dinged it up a bit. It is white with black leather interior, very minor damage to drivers seat, rest of interior looks really nice. Some rust starting to show up under the side trim, you can see where it is starting to discolor a bit, so there's that. Trunk seemed to be leaking, I think probably the rear window seal so maybe some caulk would fix that. AC ran down, probably just needs a charge unless the seals are bad. Belt is off but compressor seemed to spin so I don't know. Would probably need a set of tires if you were going to drive it far or fast but they had good tread, just likely old. Re: [MBZ] One or Two for Mr. Snook, Esq
That's the one I bought from the estate sale, $1300. Haven't done anything with it yet, sitting in the barn, I start it occasionally and it lights right off. I drove it before I got it and the brakes were grinding and grabby but worked, car ran very well except the throttle return spring is missing or broken or something (which is interesting, I pulled one off the 79 300TD and the 78 300CD has a different throttle linkage arrangement so it doesn;t seem to be the same). I haven't even looked at it much yet due to some other issues. The story is this woman owned it since like 1981 or so, it was her baby, She died a coupla years ago, and the long-time BF would start it occasionally and move it around the driveway and wash it, but she never let him drive it when she was alive, so he never drove it after she couldn't drive it or after she died. It's a pretty nice car actually, very clean and looks good from 20ft and everything is there and straight. Runs, drives. I was thinking to BAT it unless someone wants it. Bring your trailer and haul it and the E$500 dizzel home, we could work something out. --FT On 10/28/17 10:42 AM, Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes wrote: Really? So what is the deal? I used to get my 240D onto I495 north and put the go pedal on the floor for 10 miles. That section is pretty flat so it'd hold 85.5mph the whole way. -Curt On Friday, October 27, 2017, 2:34:44 PM EDT, Donald Snook via Mercedes <mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: WOW That 300SDL is nice. I did an EMERGENCY u-turn when I saw this very car several months ago. Chatted with the owner/guardian briefly. He seemed to be a knowledgeable enthusiast and the car looked quite fantastic. I guess he moved north, which explains why I haven't seen it around since then. Not sure he will get that kind of money for it, esp since it is a 240D vs 300D. Still, it was a nice car!
