Sounds like they did so poorly with the first year car here [though it was
in use in Europe before then] they decided not to try the second time. I
still think it was a nice car to drive as long as you were not personally
responsible for repairing the flaws.

It also seems reasonable safe, at least anecdotally. I know someone who
lost control of one at 60 mph in a rainstorm on US-101 and slide
sideways into a tree, which hit the driver's side door. He was a bit
bruised up but he walked away without further injuries.

I looked it up to be sure. It seems the story is both cars were the same
until 2004, when Europe got an all-new Focus, while the U.S. got the old
platform with a facelift.

Yeah - I recall some brake problem, but nothing like that. Calipers /
rotors replaced at about 30k I think. I suspect that by the 3rd year they
had a pretty good car.

I had an '00 Focus with the Sony Xplod stereo package. Nice car, except I'd
go through a set of rotors every 10k, and usually take the calipers with
'em.

2006-05-04 Thread Zoltan Finks

Come to think of it, my friend has a Focus, and he had major brake issues
with it. Something like the calipers and rotors had to be replaced at least
once.

The rest of the thing seems to be holding up though. He could work for Ford
as a tester - the way he tries to catch air on the long roads with numerous
dips and curves he drives every day.

Well for one thing it wasn't built in the US! Was probably built in Germany
or the UK. Europeans won't stand for the shoddy build quality that we get
here. Talking about assembly issues not design flaws.

I remember driving my first UK Ford which was a Cortina in green. I was
amazed at how well put together it was compared to US made Fords.

The Volkswagen Polo I had in Belfast was another surprising car. Even my
Austin Maestro was better than most over here!

Just to keep things complicated, the car sold as the Focus in Europe is NOT
the same car sold as the Focus in the U.S.
