During the '60s you could buy new chrome plated pistons. On the 110 we
replaced the pistons/seals and rubbed the cylinders with increasingly fine
wetordry. The calipers were fine for 100K plus miles until it was sold. If
new chrome pistons were available today I would rebuild the calipers instead
of buying new calipers which are quite expensive.

Re: [MBZ] W123 caliper rebuild?

2012-10-07 Thread Peter Frederick
Rebuld is fairly easy, but you have to get the piston in at the
correct angle to prevent squealing.

You should only clean the bore ABOVE the seal, never touch the surface
below the seal with anything but solvent. If you change the size, the
caliper is likely to seize from cocking in the bore, particularly when
pads are worn, and if you leave any grit in there, they will drag.

Never separate the halves, it's difficult to get the metal seals in
there to seal again, and alignment is fairly critical. It's not hard
to lift the pistons out if they are not stuck, and brake fluid and the
pedal works pretty well if they are stuck.
