Anyone have the part number for the 123 striker?

Seems I have a bad one now.

On the 123, it has _always_ been the strike on the body, not the
latch on the door. I cannot tell by looking if it is worn out.
Careful measuring revealed nothing consistent. Adjusting and
lubricating were of no help. Replace with a new one, and it works
right.

This has happened on least 4-6 123 doors - both front and back.

This just started a few days ago, and there’s nothing that’s happened
to suggest something is broken. In all honesty, I’ve never had an
issue with a door latch on a Mercedes, so this is completely new to me.

I looked at the strike and it doesn’t appear to be worn in any way
that i can tell. When you slam the door is certainly latches and stays
closed, so the mechanism is certainly working. The strike is not loose.

I’m wondering if the strike is simply worn out?

I want to address this before it gets ugly and the door won’t latch at
all. I’m going to do some googling and see what I can find out….

Yep, and a 2 lb hammer makes em work good, and helps to loosen the screw.

What Rick said - those work great for Phillips head screws, as the hammer
drives the bit into the slot while banging and turning it. Highly
recommended for this application.

That's where the big difference between the hand impact and the
air or electric guns comes in. With the hand impact every time
you hit with the hammer the bit is forced into the screw head and
that alone will make it hold onto the screw much better.

those things were a required tool for working on the older bikes.

Yes, but... if it has started to round out, an electric impact will make quick

Impact wrench is the way to go.

I've beat on the hand impact wrenches. In the 60s and 70s, if you had a
hondog motorsickle, the hand impact and a 2 lb hammer were the first 2
tools you needed. Hondogs and a lot of other asian junk uses very soft

Kroil for a while then pop the screw heads a good lick or two
with a hammer and try again to loosen them.
Rinse and repeat and if not you could also put the hex driver in
and hit that good and hard with a hammer. sooner or later it
should come loose.

Worse comes to worse just drill out the head just enough for it
to pop off, take the stop off and use a vise grip to turn what's
left of the screw out. Without the head they usually come out
real easy.

Get replacements on hand and drill the old ones out.

They’re stupidly soft for some weird reason. My driver’s door strike can loose
without effort, but in the interim I was going to swap the rear onto the
driver’s door until the replacement came. The rear door bolts all tried to
round off, so I left them alone.

At least that would be my approach. They would be easy to drill out and simple
to grab ahold of once the strike is removed.

As I mentioned in a later post, the little plastic tab on the bottom was
missing. This appears to trigger the latch to “grab” and close, hence the
having to slam the door to get it to latch.

I replaced the strike with the new one before I left for work yesterday. Took
all of about two minutes, now the door latches and closes with the requisite MB
“thunk”.

A work-around that worked for me is this: Instead of just giving the open door

If it's like the latch on my '83 300D and 240D, it could either be a small
piece of rubber that sticks out, intercepts the door latch, and breaks off
(look closely for where a piece of rubber has broken off); or the stricker
could have gotten loose and was pushed back.
Striker must be replaced for broken off rubber, or readjusted and tightened for
one that's pushed back.

[MBZ] W126 Door Latch

2017-02-21 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
The driver’s door on my 350SDL has been having a hard time latching - that is,
I have to slam it to get it to close completely.

This just started a few days ago, and there’s nothing that’s happened to
suggest something is broken. In all honesty, I’ve never had an issue with a
door latch on a Mercedes, so this is completely new to me.

I looked at the strike and it doesn’t appear to be worn in any way that i can
tell. When you slam the door is certainly latches and stays closed, so the
mechanism is certainly working. The strike is not loose.

I’m wondering if the strike is simply worn out?

I want to address this before it gets ugly and the door won’t latch at all.
I’m going to do some googling and see what I can find out….

Thanks,

Dan
