Re: [MBZ] Wow

2022-05-19 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
After looking at the pictures, I identified 7 lug nuts that are good
salvage rest of the car is toast.
I'm suggesting 3 other cars were involved, in sequence... 1. Hit from the
rear, 2. Rear impact drove the car into a rear end impact with the car in
front of it, with trajectory into the right hand lane, where, 3. Car 3
struck a long blow from the rear door to the front A frame, ending up in a
"T Bone" effect.
Strike #3 suggests that Car 3 also took a freeway speed rear end impact,
about the time it got to the front of this car...
"Time to hang up the phone a drive."

Yeah that could be it. At least 3 big hits somehow or other.

A testament to German design when it was engineers not beancounters in charge.
I would not want to test it out but a 124 would be a good test subject it
appears. Reminds me of Wilton’s car, white/burgundy that got punched in LF by a
red light runner, took the hit well but it wasn’t nearly as bad as that. The
steel up front is pretty soft, a sawzall goes right through it, I guess that is
how it absorbs all the energy.

Re: [MBZ] Wow

2022-05-19 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
I would say the opposite, probably rear ended off center and shoved into the
next lane and then t-boned.

Driver’s door had to be pried open, but unlatched. Driver side rear door very
likely works normally

hopefully no one was in the rear passenger side or passenger front, but likely
only serious injury to legs and arms. Not that the sear (and the floor) rose
but stayed upright.

Having personal experience with crashing a Benz, it’s hard to believe how
little one is injured in a really bad crash in one. Very little room left in
mine at the floor pan (A pillar shoved in at least 18 inches), but the only
damage to me was muscles spasms in my back, bruised nerves on a rib, and glass
driven into the back of my arm.

A friend of mine worked as an EMT in California — said you always knew who was
in the Benz in an accident, as they would be standing on the side of the road
when the EmTs got there. Very very rare for all the doors to be stuck.

2022-04-14 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
This is in my future so I am (not?) encouraged!  I would probably go
with the rebuilds from TH and be done with it, probably not worth the
time and bother associated with zylinder DIY rebuild.   And with the
cars going upupup in value it would not be a bad expenditure to get it
right.  Does not sound like a pleasant job but that's whatchagottado.

The German guy commenting on the vid made some interesting points about
the wiring too -- apparently the biodegradable wiring was not a German
gummint mandate but some cheap-out by MB with some suppliers of certain
wiring, not all of the wires in the looms.  He also said there were at
least 2 or 3 Euro suppliers for "new" looms.  i checked out one of them,
and I think I had looked at another one, so there are parts out there.
And again rewiring the looms is a DIY job but it is tricky and
time-consuming.  I have not dug into the wiring yet but I am sure that
and the throttle bodies are going to need some work.

I got the new rear spheres in but since I have the car up on blocks and
the rad out I have not fired it up and pumped up the suspension system
yet.  That will have to wait.

The joys of a 90s German supercar!  I am comforted it is not Italian
with unobtanium parts.

That and there’s no telling how long the seals will last. This should be a once

their work *and* provides excellent support. Not only that, but some
components, such as the top locks in the top of the windshield frame, are
easily damaged if you attempt to disassemble them, and also require careful
alignment when reassembling for them to work correctly. Top Hydraulics aligns
and adjusts them when they rebuild them, cutting down the time it takes to get
everything working again after reassembly. Sure, it’s easily $800 (or more) for
a complete cylinder rebuild depending on the model, but it cuts to the
potential for future issues down to almost nothing. Not only that, but if you
goof up a cylinder, you’re buying a new one, which will cost you more than what
a rebuild of the complete set costs.

2.) R is an unpleasant job, mainly because you have to disassemble the back section
of the interior. Other than that, it’s just a brute force, time consuming job that requires
a lot of arm scratching gyrations to get to everything. Again, Top Hydraulics provides some
really good documentation on R of the cylinders and what to watch out for, as there
are some microswitches on the top frame that are critical to proper operation that are
easily damaged or goofed up when R’ing if you’re not careful.

It takes all of a day to remove and another day to install. Again, it’s a lot of
R that you can’t shortcut, you just have to take your time and do it
properly. It’s not difficult nor does it require special tools, it just takes time.

I engaged in discussions with the owner and some others in the comments. The
owner says he knew the issues and was ok with the deal (more money than sense I
guess) and that the weezurd gets a lot of views from the drama which makes
sense.

One guy, a German maybe, had interesting comments about the wire insulation
issue.

Mine in probably similar condition but better spec was $2250 which I think was
quite reasonable but I can address the issues myself. It will take some dineros
for parts and time buts that’s the deal with owning a 90s supercar. You know,
being an inthoooseeass and all.

Yes those ideas came to mind but she is more in the mode of "let's get the

in mixing it up with the guy. I just thought it was a BS attitude on the

Every time I look at our two '9x Dodge pickups I'm continually impressed by
their appearance.
They look capable, yet understated. Clean lines. Nothing newer looks as good,
IMHO. The
Cummins and the V10 are more than capable of doing any pulling I need, and both
engines
have excellent longevity reputations. I foresee no reason to _ever_ replace
them.

The neighbor has one, too. We just used his tailgate yesterday as a worktable
upon which to resurrect
my Hobart 135 wire-feed welder, the loaner. (He'd borrowed it and broken it.)
Mine's working again,
and we started in on his broken $50 Hobart, same model. (He bought it for
parts, to fix mine, but I
think we can get them both working. I'm handy that way.)

The neighbor's truck was getting pretty beat up, what with its heavy use,
getting sideswiped by
some dolt, and rolled onto its side by his son. Rather than replace it he
opted to replace the bed,
have the necessary body work done, and repaint. It looks good, but not 'too
good to use'. Costs
mostly covered by the dolt's insurance, along with careful shopping. (Used bed
and door off
Craigslist, etc.)

Memo to dolts everywhere: the blind S-curves on a rural road are NOT the place
to be
checking your texts while driving...

A friend of my neighbor asked to borrow my truck to move some stuff with. He's

I sort of understand trucks becoming taller given they are pretty much

massive grill. They are putting smaller engines in - V6 turbo rather

I watched some recent vids the other day and yeah he’s getting a bit slower. I
was wondering the same thing. He has quite a collection plus some amazing
craftsmen in his restoration shop. I presume he’s got it all well-planned in
his final instructions, what that might be is the question but I think of some
sort of museum or something with cars that actually get used. Or I hope so
anyway.

It's disappointing to think my dad and mom went to medical school there, I
was born there, and my mother's parents lived at 629 6th Street Southeast
for many, many years.

I recall visiting them during the summer and walking down to the
mom-and-pop grocery store at the end of the block to buy groceries for
them.

How things have changed.
