Re: [MBZ] Washington state plans to ban most non-electric vehicles by 2030

2022-03-26 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
That is how it is here. Used to be you paid excise tax which was based on some
unknown book value. Even a $500 car will cost $160 to register it. Back when I
was buying company cars a new vehicle that cost $15k would be about $600. Have
heard people buying cars then can’t pay the $1200-1400 to register it. Forever
you paid the excise tax but there was no sales tax. A few years ago they
started also charging sales tax on top of the excise tax. It’s amazing you have
to pay sales tax on a used item.

Now let’s talk penalties. After 30 days it used to be .25 per day up to a cap
of $100 for each of the excise tax and the tag. Now it’s $1 a day up to $100
cap on each so a possible $200 total. Since they sales tax went into effect
there is also a $1 per day penalty on that as well with no cap. If it’s been
years and you never registered it, you could be looking and many hundreds in
penalties.

Also, used to be when you sold a car, everything started over with new owner.
If car was off the road for years, new owner transfers it and that’s that. Now,
the new owner has to pay the penalty of the PO let the registration expire.
Same $1 per day up to $100 deal. So might also have to pay another hundred for
that barn find that has not been tagged in years.

Several times it has been cheaper to go the Vermont route rather than paying
all the fees here.

Despite their best intentions to save the planet, there is a harsh reality
that has arisen which must be overcome due to a huge rise in the cost of
raw materials to make electric car batteries [using current state of the
art to make batteries]. A 472% increase in cost of lithium raw material to
make EV car batteries in 12 months. That is the good news, the bad news is,
even at inflated prices, there still is a world wide shortage of discovered
source materials. Also, nickel, another required EV battery raw material,
has had huge increases in raw material price.

When I lived in Illinois, registration was a flat fee, something like $35.
Ridiculously cheap. That may have changed since I moved away, over 20 years ago
now.

Washington state plans to ban most non-electric vehicles by 2030,
according to a newly signed bill by Gov. Jay Inslee.

The bill says that all vehicles of the model year 2030 or later that are
sold, purchased, or registered in the state must be electric.

"On or before December 31, 2023, the interagency electric vehicle
coordinating council ... shall complete a scoping plan for achieving the
 2030 target," it reads.

The bill covers a lot of transportation issues in the state and is a part
of a larger $16.9 billion transportation package called “Move Ahead
Washington," which Inslee described as a way to create more efficient
 transportation options.

Despite the excise tax stuff I will say that in general, Indiana has the lowest
fees when it comes to titling and registering cars. When I titled and
registered the 2002 E320 4Matic up there it was barely $100. I was stunned, as
I hadn’t bothered to check on fees before I went.

In FL you’re not getting out the door to title and register a car for under
$200. That doesn’t include the sales tax. And heaven forbid if it’s an out of
state car they’ll try and gouge you for a $225 “administrative fee” for
bringing in an out of state car.

Sounds like Indiana with their goofy excise tax on top of the registration fee
based on the selling price (MSRP) of the car until it’s 12 years old. I never
bought a new car when I lived there, partly because I couldn’t afford one for
most of the time, but even when I could I wasn’t about to pay their stupid
excise tax.

I just looked and they’ve cut it back to 9 years now, but if you bought a new
car now and it cost $42k or more you’re paying over $500 in excise taxes. This
is all on top of a 7% sales tax when you purchase the vehicle.

2022-03-26 Thread mitch--- via Mercedes
I remember when Michigan instituted a property tax on car registrations,
not for the car's value but for its MSRP, beginning with model year
1983.

OK, I'll just drive 1982 and older cars...but that only worked for so
long, by 1990 I'd given up on it. My 1975 Civic was mostly inoperable,
my 1976 Subaru and 1977 Saab were total rust buckets, and my 1980
Citation broke a shift fork inside the transmission and was too rusty to
be worth fixing.

The bill covers a lot of transportation issues in the state and is a
part of a larger $16.9 billion transportation package called “Move Ahead
Washington," which Inslee described as a way to create more efficient
transportation options.

Da G'mnt shouldn't be in the marriage bidness to begin with. They should
just enforce contractual agreements between consenting parties, and leave
the vexing morality plays to those WGAS about such silliness. I had an
entirely secular state-sanctioned contract signing ceremony, officiated by a
district judge, taking place in within the state capitol dome, of all
places. Why should that be denied to any two consenting adults?

The place was so filthy that my wife wouldn't even go in, I went in but

Looked at a $120k house that didn't have interior access to the basement.
They'd converted the attic into a room that was too short for me to stand up

Man, the general concensus seems to be that the Pac. NW consists of a
majority of wierdos. Growing up in AZ, there was a joke that
California

was
the land of the fruits and nuts. Maybe all the Californians moved
north

and all the Mexicans have moved to their north as well.

And this notion of organized resistance and protests, etc. to people
moving
in and californicating Washinton - wow. I bet the majority of these
protesters would consider the same type of protesting against foreign
immigration to be one of the cardinal sins.

Whatever, it won't be the first time I've felt the you ain't from

here syndrome (having moved from Tucson to a relatively small town in
Minnesota - with a bald head at the time).

Actually, when we were checking out our probable new town Bainbridge
Island,
we were very surprised that we didn't run into any of the sort of
resistance
I'm hearing of. People seemed pretty genuine and welcoming even when
they

heard we're moving there. Maybe they've got their own version of
Minnesota
Nice (which, we've found, is skin-deep - be nice face to face, and
thus

gather a bunch of information to be used in gossip sessons later).

Kind of the same around here in AZ...Cal people sold their homes for obsene
amounts of moola over there, moved here, bought two or three homes, drove
the price up exponentially. As evidence, the home I sold in '02 for $239K
just resold for $441K and the guy was hammered by the neighbors for setting
the price too low (it sold in two days).

Now, instead of whining about the rain, they whine about the heat.

But denying them access to the institution of marriage is no more

I like that Maine humor. It's the only other state I could imagine
living
for an extended period. Obviously, that wouldn't make me a native, nor
even
welcome.

I constantly give my wife grief because she was born in Virginia, yet
claims
to be a WA native. She moved out to Seattle at age three months.

On a different Washington note: How about the weather - the news is now
officially blaming El Nino and, more interestingly, global warming for the
wierd weather across the country.

We are enjoying a downright balmy winter so far here in MN. And WA is
getting a ton of rainstorms apparently.

Homosexuals seem to be one of the few minorities it's still okay to
discriminate against. I've always found it striking that the arguments
against gay marriage are mostly the same ones that were used against
interracial marriage, back when that was illegal.

bought a new ACC servo, buy a house in Maine.

And drive the old '77 300D? Cool! If I was in such a situation, I would
consider moving up to a 1986-7 300SDL or a W124 300TD wagon. Hheck, with
that kind of jackpot, I could afford to buy them all along with a nice
property with plenty of garages to house them all! Of course, the old '83
300SD would stay too since it would still be fun to adjust valves once in a
while.

This has been my understanding too, though far less educated than some.

My '92 Harley Sportster needed at least 92 octane according the the manual.
It pinged on acceleration in all but the coolest months in the PHX area
(even on 92 or 93 octane).

The guy who sold me my Saab claimed that Super or Premium, call it what
you may, contained good juices and additives and it should be run every few
tanks whether or not your engine needs the octane. I believe him as much as
I believe that he was going to fix the power steering and that the sunroof
doesn't leak.

Generally you want to go by what the owner's manual says. If the manual

It was called miscegenation and it was illegal in many states. The
first such law was enacted in Maryland in 1661. The US Supreme Court
shot down miscegenation laws in all states in 1967. The only state NOT
to seek to enact a miscegenation law was Vermont.

None the less, some states were so racist that they would not remove the
anti-miscegenation statutes from their books. Alabama finally voted to
take its statute off the books in 2000.

Not just Washington but the whole of the Pacific Northwest is well known for
the high population of weirdos, individualists, and iconoclasts. If you
don't fit in, you'll fit right in. ;)

And if Washington isn't weird enough for you, come on down to Oregon. We
have a much worse economy, but we make up for it: marijuana and machine guns
are both legal here. ;)

Man, the general concensus seems to be that the Pac. NW consists of a
majority of wierdos. Growing up in AZ, there was a joke that California was
the land of the fruits and nuts. Maybe all the Californians moved north
and all the Mexicans have moved to their north as well.

And this notion of organized resistance and protests, etc. to people moving
in and californicating Washinton - wow. I bet the majority of these
protesters would consider the same type of protesting against foreign
immigration to be one of the cardinal sins.

Whatever, it won't be the first time I've felt the you ain't from around
here syndrome (having moved from Tucson to a relatively small town in
Minnesota - with a bald head at the time).

Actually, when we were checking out our probable new town Bainbridge Island,
we were very surprised that we didn't run into any of the sort of resistance
I'm hearing of. People seemed pretty genuine and welcoming even when they
heard we're moving there. Maybe they've got their own version of Minnesota
Nice (which, we've found, is skin-deep - be nice face to face, and thus
gather a bunch of information to be used in gossip sessons later).

I had a friendly gent down in Yuma AZ gently suggest that my friend and I
keep on-a-movin, when we were passing through town. Apparently a couple of
WA longhairs in a VW bus ain't too welcome down in those parts.

Trust me, until you learn the secret handshake, we'll find uniquely devious
and covert ways in which to undermine your health and well-being. Remember
to slap the I 3 Bill bumper sticker on, just for Clay.

2007-01-03 Thread Werner Fehlauer
The folks in the Pacific Northwest are like any others - treat them like you
want to be treated, and you'll get along just fine. Living in NE Tacoma for
3 years, we found the locals all to be as nice or better than we've seen
anywhere in the USA - and we all laughed at the tongue-in-cheek comments
about immigrants from other states.
There was always the unwritten law though that insisted that it rains all
the time in Seattle, to discourage too much of an inclination to attract
newcomers. In actuality, New York City gets more rainfall every year,
although over less days (average). What people don't realize is that
Washington has not only high desert that requires irrigation to produce
crops, but also has desert and rain forest conditions on the Olympic
peninsula. The neat part is that most years, there are flowers and green
grass, and little snow to bother with for any long periods.
Now if you want a bit of snobbery (flame suit on), take a good look at the
old New England states, where if you didn't get your feet wet while climbing
off the Mayflower, you are just a newbie.

Dude, I'm just not used to people saying things they do not mean.

Kindly reserve your name-calling for whatever other lists you belong to. If
I'm paranoid, it's not your place to say it.

All I did was ask you to explain your bizarre, threatening posts to me, and
clearly you take such a request as a challenge to do more of what you do.
Can't seem to break character.
