Or by cranking the engine so each cylinder is at TDC when you work on it's
valves. Valve stem seals are very sensitive and a pain-staking process,
don't ask me how I know

gassers and I see no reason why a diesel couldn't be done the same way.

Valve stem seals are very sensitive and a painstaking process...

I had a 450SL that smoked vilely due to damaged seals on
one cylinder. (It also fouled that plug quickly.) I replaced
only the two and drove it for thousands of miles and several
years before selling the car. Cured the problem completely.
It wasn't all that hard on that particular car.

I'd unhook the breather tube from the valve cover, or reroute it to a jar.
If the car quits burning oil and sprays it out the breather instead,
you might see if there's a big gap in the breather tube in the valve
cover.

If the oil still comes out the exhaust without the breather dumping
oil in the intake, it's got to be coming through the rings, valve
guides, or head gasket. If the car passes a cylinder leakdown test,
I'd think the valve stem seals would be worth trying.

AH HA! A troubleshooting plan. The nuke in me likes it.

Re: [MBZ] What Should I Start Amassing?

2008-02-18 Thread LarryT
The symptoms indicate Valve Stem Seals. A car that idles then produces a
plume of white smoke when the car pulls away are typically valve stem seal
related. A car that emits white smoke when driving at a steady speed
indicates a problem with rings.

You indicated there was smoke after stopping at a light IIRC - Valve Stem
Seals. You will need to find a shop willing to use compressed air to hold
the valves up (with the piston for that cylinder at TDC) while the seals are
replaced. Many will say the heads must be removed.

Good luck -

Re: [MBZ] What Should I Start Amassing?

2008-02-18 Thread Peter Frederick
Generally, if a diesel starts easily when stone cold, there are not
compression problems, and oil consumption must then be bad valve
guide seals (often compounded by loose valve stem to guide clearance)
or failed oil control rings. You won't see smoke until you are
REALLY burning oil, upwards of a quart in 100 miles or so (my old 220D).

Bad valve guide seals are worth a quart of oil in 1000 miles on any
engine, believe it or not, and sometimes they dribble from the
factory. On a gasser, ash deposits on the plugs are a sign, but you
have to pull the head or use a borescope on a diesel to see the oil
dripping off the intake valve.

If you get a short puff of blue smoke on startup, especially warm
after half an hour sit, suspect leakage past the valve stem seals.

Or by cranking the engine so each cylinder is at TDC when you work on it's
valves. Valve stem seals are very sensitive and a pain-staking process, don't
ask me how I know

 Hi Bob,
An engine that smokes after a short idle is an indication the Valve Stem
Seals are bad. There are ways to change them by pressurizing the cylinder
and avoiding removal of the head. At least thats the way it is done on
gassers and I see no reason why a diesel couldn't be done the same way.

 Anyway, that is

Subject: [MBZ] What Should I Start Amassing?

I'm at 190K miles. Oil usage is consistently at 1 qt per 650 miles or so.
It's burning, not dripping or getting into the air cleaner housing. Smokes
more now on acceleration and at idle. Suppose it's time to address it.

What do you think I'll have to do? What should I start buying now from
Rusty? Who has a good step by step guide they can send me? I think I'll
 have
to get a third car first..

 Whaddya think.

I'd check out the vacuum pump and crankcase breather/PCV first.
