Re: [MBZ] brake warning light

...Possible, that's why I need to explore.
Had something similar in my Mums 190E, the brake sensor had partially
come out of it's hole and there was still a good 1/3 of the pad left
 when the light came on...

Next time you're driving, look down to see if your left foot is on the
brake pedal.

I don't see how you could wear down to the sensor in less that 10K miles,
anyway. Even my 201s which ate pads were getting 14K miles on the fronts and
27K miles on the rears. Thank God those days are gone forever. 40K miles+ is
the new normal.

Does the low fluid level warning use the same lamp, thinking of the rear
half of the reservoir?

It WAS the switch reset. I now remember having to reset that once
before but it had totally slipped my mind. A quick push in of the
switch (why do they make that so thin and needle-like?)

Reset switch? Don, your car is WAY too high tech.

[MBZ] brake warning light

2005-08-20 Thread LT Don
Braked down from 60 mph at a stop sign this morning coming back from
an eye appointment. Car stopped as it normally would but the brake
warning light came on. This is the square light, not the wear sensor
light.

Checked brake fluid level when I got home and it was between minimum
and maximum. Topped it off to the maximum mark. Light still on.

Consulted the owner's manual. Says this could mean the parking brake
is on (it isn't), or it is low on fluid (was maybe a bit low but not
really low and is now on max), or there is a leak (can't see anything
dripping). Are there any other possibilities, such as maybe the brakes
need to be bled? Brake pads all looked good last time, which was at
the most a couple of thousand miles ago.

One thing I've noticed over the past few weeks or maybe months is that
I seem to have good power assist when first stopping but sometimes
(not too often though) it will see that I have lost power assist all
of a sudden. The power assist returns to normal once I am driving
again. Might or might not be related.

Any suggestions?

LT Don, as long as you have been exposed to this list you know the first
thing you do is tell us what vehicle you are talking about I am
taking a shot in the dark here and suspect that you have a MC with a
switch on the side, which can be reset. MB had this as a safety factor
so that when either half of the MC malfunctioned an internal rod would
move and trip the switch.

I ASSUME that the MC is painted black. You know what happens when you
ASSUME don't you. Well I'm going to tell you again: ASSUME; you make an
ASS of U and ME.

Darrell:

1. I used to have 1977 240D in my signature line but it seems to
have gone away. I will have to fix that.

2. It WAS the switch reset. I now remember having to reset that once
before but it had totally slipped my mind. A quick push in of the
switch (why do they make that so thin and needle-like?) turned off the
warning light. ... I am such an optimist that I had already checked
the prices for a new master cylinder.

3. I think someone mentioned this before, but WalMart does stock
5-quart jugs of the Truck/SUV Mobil 1. There was some concern on the
list (Marshall's name comes to mind) by some that this would only be
available in quarts. Bought a 5-quart jug today while I was at WalMart
getting my vision checked* and just did an oil change. 5300 miles
between changes; probably safe for mostly in-town driving @ 35 mph and
below.

* = My eyesight is improving for some reason. Left contact went from
-1.25 to -.50 right contact went from -.75 to -.25. I can now see
