I've had the bike sitting upside-down with amonia down the seat post
since Saturday evening. Occasional taps with the hammer and this
morning I put the pipe wrench on the seat post and tried some torque. I
could see the frame flexing along the top bar and the seat post held
firm. Next will be hot/cold treatment, I just need to locate a heat
gun at work

Ammonia dissolves the corroded aluminum which is making the seat post
too large to move. If the seat tube is open to the bottom bracket
shell, take off the crank and bottom bracket, turn the frame upside
down, and pour the ammonia down the seat tube with a funnel and hose.

Where do you buy your groceries? Look in the cleaning supplies.

Anhydrous ammonia is a low temperature refrigerant, you can't pour it any more
than you can Freon. But the household ammonia solution that you use for glass
and tile cleaner should do the trick.

Re: [MBZ] dissimilar metal corrosion

2011-04-16 Thread Gerry Archer

I've had a similar problem; a pipe inside a pipe.
After trying all the solvents; WD-40, 50-50 acetone and light oil, Aero
kroil, Blaster, Ruster Eater from Autozone, etc.; I bought an Icee from a
convenience store, put a cork in one end of the inside tube, filled the
inside tube up with Icee, and heated the outer tube all around with a hair
dryer set on high while hitting the open end of the inside tube with a heavy
plastic mallet (rubber mallet didn't
work). Had to refill the inside tube with cold Icee a couple of times since
it melted pretty fast.
I was prepared to heat the outside tube with a propane torch if necessary
but after about 20 minutes of heating the outside tube and hitting the
inside tube with the plastic mallet, it finally moved a little and
eventually came out.

Good luck,
Gerry

Ammonia diazo processing is good source - if that process has any

ammonia vapor turns the compound to blue after exposure. See
