[MBZ] jump start pack
I'm thinking of buying one of the jump start hot packs that rescued me yesterday. I see several on eBay of various capacities. There is one that ends in under an hour with reasonable shipping costs and a low current bid. But it is only 300 amps cold cranking amps and 700 peak amps. Is that enough power for a Benz diesel? I think our batteries (240D) is about 875 amps or something like that. -- 1977 240D 1972 Honda CB-500K motorcycle http://www.airamericaradio.com/listen

Re: [MBZ] jump start pack
I pick up a junk yard battery for our camper - mine was $15 though. Kids were able to leave the light on in the camper all night and watch TV. I have also used it on my 300sd when the battery was dead and it is actually now in my old John Deere 212. 1000 crank'n apps sure starts the old Deere right up. On a side note, the bank I work for has a jump pack to use on our repos - seems most have no or a bad battery. Our model requires you to recharge it every so often or it goes dead (1 month of sitting and it is worthless). LT Don wrote: But back to my original question -- how many cold cranking amps should I be requiring, assuming that this thing will be sitting in the trunk of my car on cold winter days. I'm guessing as much as 800CCA if it does all the work, maybe half that if the main battery helps out.

Jim Cathey wrote: The cheapest shipping I've seen with any of them is $20. Makes that $12 used car battery in the trunk awfully attractive! The advantage of the jump packs is they're usually sealed, so they won't spill acid in your trunk. My experience with them is they work pretty well for jumping a car with a weak battery, but not too well if the main battery is completely flat. I once tried to jump a 302 cid Ford V-8 with one, after I had accidentally left the dome light on for a solid week. The battery was dead as a doornail, of course. All hooking up the jump pack did was give me two dead batteries. ;)
