Re: [MBZ] low idle pulsating idle when engine(not ambient temp) is cold
I'm not burning any oil and I think it's pretty normal to see smoke at night on acceleration when illuminated by headlights behind you...smoke within reason, of course. If you can't see it during the day, then it's not much smoke. Ambient temp has nothing to do with it. Any ideas as to what is going on? Thanks, Chris Chris and all, I, too, have just about the identical problem, and my valve are adjusted within specs. The compression on all five cylinders are good. The only thing I have noticed lately is that I seem to use more oil than I used to, about a quart every 1200 miles. Also, when I floor the accelerator I notice smoke in the rear view mirror lit be approaching headlights. I know Chris and I would really like to solve this problem. Good idea. I have the BERU upgraded plugs and relay...so if one is out, the others will still be staying on (for up to 3 minutes!) and would heat things up more quickly than the original glow plugs. Christopher McCann wrote: this would be a sweet and easy fix. Now the dummy question. If I have a multi-meter, How do I check the glow plugs? The easiest way is to remove the black plastic cover on the fender and disconnect the plug that connects the glow plug wiring harness to the relay. Now select the ohms function on your meter, ground one lead to the engine block or battery negative terminal, and probe each pin on the plug with the other lead. You should read a low resistance for each one. (I forget the exact value, and the resistance of the test leads enters into it, but they should all be roughly equal.) If one comes up infinite, or with a very high resistance, either that plug is bad or it's become disconnected somehow.
Re: [MBZ] low idle pulsating idle when engine(not ambient temp) is cold
The resistance should be .6 ohms Jeff Zedic Toronto

Jeff Zedic wrote: The resistance should be .6 ohms Good to know. Anyone measuring that should bear in mind that cheap multimeter test leads often add 2 or 3 ohms all on their own. Low resistance values are very hard to measure. (This is why the most accurate way to test glow plugs is with an ammeter.)
