I don't know about the 126 chassis, but the 123 uses flat-head
screws that the _taper_ locks to the plate. I have had trouble
removing a number of them - but it has never been the fault of the
threads. The hammer blow can be especially useful with the "taper
lock" of the screw head.

And I'm always sure to fully grease the _head_ when re-assembling.

Also, if only one is stuck, let the strike plate turn to allow a
little less tension on the taper.

VSR drills have a screw in the centerline of the chuck to keep it from

But if the chuck is thread-on, you might unscrew it from the drill's

What Rick said - one of those is what I always used on door striker plates.
Never had a problem. Of course, that was 20 or so years ago - they've been
rusting even more since then. YMMV.

I have found that when I'm going to encounter a screw or bolt that "will
likely be stuck" it is helpful to hit it dead on with a flat face punch the
size of the screw head, with a few blows with at least a 1 lb hammer.

This tends to break loose the rust bond at the thread level between the
screw or bolt and the fastener [nut, nut plate, blind hole threads, etc.].

Side benefit of the punch strike for phillips screws is that it moves metal
at the phillips bit area and "tightens" the phillips bit grip into the
screw... sometimes, I move enough metal I need to "drive" the phillips bit
into the screw... then have a good tight fit for max torque on the screw.

Also, spray the screw head down with penetrate... the shock of hammer blows
will help move it to the screw threads...

I've done that three times. Maybe I just was
lucky but each time the threaded part of the
screw just came out with my fingers turning it.

Use a drill bit just larger then the threaded
part of the screw. Stop when the head falls
off. Take the plate off and unscrew the stub
by hand.

The only hard part in your case is the broken
extractor and getting it out of the hole you
have so you can make it bigger.

It's such a happy moment when your bit jams and the bolt spins out of the hole
by accident.

Oops, I just checked, now those bits are $8-30 each.
And a set of five with matching spiral extractors is $85.
Anyway, the striker screws are flat heads, right?
You might be able to drill the screw out, take the striker off, and put
vice-grips on the stub of screw remaining.
Mitch.

Yes, start with a smaller bit and work up. Using a larger extractor will help
avoid breakage. A cheap extractor will likely be more brittle, so stick with
better quality for this task.

Thanks, is it best to start with a smaller bit and work up? I have a
different bolt extractor that I could try using, if necessary.

Tried getting a stripped screw out of the rear door striker plate. Used a new
bolt/screw extractor, it broke off in the screw. What type of drill bit is
needed to continue this job? Any other options?? Thanks.
