yeah I wondered about that too.  They might have hacked into the head

Re: [MBZ] ‘03 ML500

2021-12-24 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Exactly correct.  I go up/down my driveway (which is somewhat bumpy with
various tree roots in the tracks, if I was staying here I would get a
coupla loads of gravel) in the 211 wagon and it is your typical MB sedan
ride, absorbs the bumps with no drama. The E500 with air ride, which is
now working, is stiffer than the wagon even on the "comfort" setting and
you can feel the bumps but it does not bounce or pound.  The ML is
rough, it hits and bounces on every one and is not particularly
pleasant.  It does not take road bumps well either.  But it will tow a
good load, and haul a fair amount of impedimenta, and will get through a
lot of unpleasant stuff if you need to.

I like them, but as a truck or SUV. I don’t think I would want to make any long
trips in one, but the seating and appointments are good. You’re going to feel
every bump in the road for sure.

Re: [MBZ] ‘03 ML500

2021-12-24 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
No not really, they are a "truck" and as such ride and handle like one
with a stiff suspension and a higher ground clearance. But if you want
to tow stuff, and have the AWD that can get you through some significant
stuff, they are a good choice. Fun would be in off-roading, they are
quite capable in that regard and can be lifted some too for bigger
tires, a lot of guys are doing that.  Being higher they are easy to get
in/out so that is a positive, and are quite roomy.  The 211 wagon can
haul a good amount too and is much more refined but I wouldn't put a
hitch on it to tow anything (maybe for a bike rack). The 4m can get you
through a lot of stuff too but there is not a lot of ground clearance.

But for kinda all-around stuff, a real "SUV" not some poser soccer mommy
ride, these are great in that regard.  I think MB did a really good job
on the first-gen 163 for a good solid all-around SUV, the 164 is good
too in the drive train (although the 722.9 is more concerning than the
722.6) but has more nannies and seems to be more of a mall-crawler.  The
163 is not bad to work on, mostly (aside from the stuff Dan has talked
about as being a PITA) as there is a fair amount of room to get at most
stuff.

I woud look at motor mounts on any of these, as they’re often bad as the
owners don’t want to pony up for replacement. It’s not a bad DIY job and
the OE parts are relatively cheap, like $35/each, but it’s labor intensive
so people often forego the work. You’ll know it as during acceleration
you’ll often hear them knock.

The 2003 ML350 in Flagstaff needs mounts. They’re on the shelf, but I
haven’t built up my tool chest there well enough that I can do them. I
expect a number of gift cards for the holiday that will enable me to attain
a level of functionality at that location so I can do the work.

Re: [MBZ] ‘03 ML500

2021-12-24 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
The 500s are the worst, they’ll tear the mounts apart, especially the passenger
side mount. The mounts are very different from the typical Mercedes motor
mount, and when the metal separates from the rubber you’ll get some serious
metal to metal contact, hence the “clunk” when you accelerate or put the car in
gear. Here’s what thtey look like:

https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/mercedes-engine-mount-1632400317-1632400318

When they fail, and they do with regularity, the metal piece with the stud on
top tears loose from the rubber part and the engine can really flail around.
The metal bits bang against each other as the engine moves around, so they make
some nasty noises when this occurs.

Like most Mercedes mounts, the passenger side isn’t bad, but the driver’s side
is a real pig. On both you have to access them from the wheel well, pulling the
liner out and heat shields. Not a fun job. Some say you have to remove the AC
compressor, but I’ve been able to do it without going that far.

I woud look at motor mounts on any of these, as they’re often bad as the owners
don’t want to pony up for replacement. It’s not a bad DIY job and the OE parts
are relatively cheap, like $35/each, but it’s labor intensive so people often
forego the work. You’ll know it as during acceleration you’ll often hear them
knock.

The 2003 ML350 in Flagstaff needs mounts. They’re on the shelf, but I haven’t

Re: [MBZ] ‘03 ML500

2021-12-24 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
That looks pretty nice for the price, the miles are not "low" but it
looks good and not in some rustbelt area so should be very clean.
Nothing particularly exotic about these, be aware it's a "truck" and
ride like one.  The 500 is quite powerful and can provide some fun in
that regard, good tow vehicle, fuel economy is not too exciting but for
what it is it does OK. Solid engine.  The AWD is very good if you do any
snow or off-roading.  Having driven my 05ML500 now for a year and a half
or so, I like it, good hauler, OK for road trips (a little noisy and
somewhat tiring) but the 211 05E320 wagon is MUCH better, quieter and
more refined in that regard.

Fly in and drive home, maybe beat on the seller a bit, but in this
market that is a decent deal.

ML500s are typically optioned out at a higher level, but other than that I
would focus on service history.

I have been able to expand my foundational knowledge at your expense.

Future SIL overheated his 4runner, and now he has big boy choices to make. This
ML could be an option for him if he asks.
