The leak was on the high pressure side of the filter, where the fuel enters
under pressure from the pump. Maybe the filter was plugged up and starving the
injection system.

Waytago!   Well if the pressure is not high enough to pop the inj
spring, it would not start.  A leak will lower the pressure.  Air in the
system IS compressible also. I think those things run at pressures in
the range of Diesel injection. (mechanical)

Maybe I've fixed this?

Yesterday I diagnosed the fuel leak as poor seal at the fuel filter,
which is next to the second fuel pump. Had a new filter, so installed
that with new copper washers at the banjo fitting, fuel leak fixed.

Car started with no issues about 7 or 8 times (other than the cranking
to fill up the new fuel filter canister). Drove it around a bit,
engine runs strong and smooth, that was yesterday evening.

This morning it started fine when stone cold.

Maybe the old fuel filter was getting plugged up? I'm sceptical that a
fast drip leak at the fuel filter would cause a no start condition.

Maybe I've fixed this?

Yesterday I diagnosed the fuel leak as poor seal at the fuel filter, which is
next to the second fuel pump. Had a new filter, so installed that with new
copper washers at the banjo fitting, fuel leak fixed.

Car started with no issues about 7 or 8 times (other than the cranking to fill
up the new fuel filter canister). Drove it around a bit, engine runs strong and
smooth, that was yesterday evening.

This morning it started fine when stone cold.

Maybe the old fuel filter was getting plugged up? I'm sceptical that a fast
drip leak at the fuel filter would cause a no start condition.

IIRC, Max, this is the light-bulb reader.

How do you know which codes come out which pins?

How do you clear the codes?

I think I did all that with the '94 E420 and '95 E320 we had, but it's
been a while and I have forgotten. Was the information in the codes file
I sent you (I think)?

As Curt said, it runs for a few seconds until the engine is started and
then runs continuously as long as the engine is running.

M104s do not have COP. They have a high-energy ignition system controlled
by a module on the driver's side fender well.

If there were something monitoring the current and something recording

2020-01-27 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
The cars I've had with electric fuel pumps they run for a couple seconds when
the key comes on and then shut off until the car is started.
Which reminds me I need to change the fuel filter on my Jetta. Put in the new
filter, turn on the key, wait while the pump cycles, repeat a couple times
until the filter is full, then start the car. I haven't tried it yet on the
Jetta but I used that technique on Angie's Golf, worked a treat.
Sometimes when I can't hear something like a fuel pump I'll grab onto it,
usually I can feel if its running even when I can't hear it.

I tapped on the relay for the fuel pump, made no difference.  Gave it
another shot of go juice, and it started with difficulty, actually it

same for fuel pump relay
Same for battery, even though i t turns the engine over.

KISS:   Fuel, air, compression, ignition, and fast enough cranking speed.

is, beyond somewhere on the engine, front or rear.
