Re: [MBZ] Bouncing upon shift

2006-04-27 Thread Peter Frederick
You must get the engine rpm closer to the tranny rpm when shifing. MB
diesels are notorious for bouncing neophyte drivers faces off the
steering wheel!

Slower clutch engagement or a bit more right foot will take care of the
problem.

I would, however, check (or just replace) the tranny mount and inspect
the diff mount and the center carrier -- hard shifting will cause
excessive wear on those parts. Probably not a bad idea to check the
engine mounts as well -- if not replaced, probably flat by now.

Try feathering the accelerator between shifts to match the engine revs to the
rest of the drivetrain.

Thanks. I sort of figured after I sent the question that it would be assumed
that less-than-optimal shifting was the culprit. I'm not sure that's the
case though - it just feels like there isn't sufficient rigidity in the
drivetrain to accept what (I think, at least) is an acceptably smooth and
efficient shift.

But I could very well be wrong. Will play around with it. Getting the wife
to do so is another matter again.

Another question: in my 83 240D, I notice that when I shift to second
and let out the clutch expediently (not dumping it though) I feel this
forward and rearword sort of bouncing of the vehicle - sort of feels
like some big pickups do that tend to have frame-bounce, only this is
fore and aft. It's annoying, especially with the nice springy seats.

I expect that something has collapsed, is worn or loose. Perhaps the
differential mount(s) or the center bearing mount. Could even be the
flex disc or the bolts that secure them. The entire engine and driveline
from front to rear is isolated in rubber and any bit of that rubber
that's more than 10 years old isn't working the way it was intended to
work. Some of that is tolerable to me, but it's NOT the way the
designers intended the car to be.
