John, I doubt they are going to have to replace the door to fix it, worse
case only the door skin Most likely they will be about to pull the dent
out just fine and repaint it.

Uhhh... it didn't have a dent in it. To be 'made whole' I don't want a

BTW, I don't want to be made rich, I was just curious about the used

Some stupid kids decided it would be fun to throw rocks at my CDI... So
now there is a fist sized dent in the door, and some gouges inside the
dent. Kids got away before my brother (who was borrowing the car) could
catch them.

So now I get to make a comprehensive claim! Yay! *rolls eyes*

The claims guy says I take it to the local adjuster this Thursday,
they'll put a price on the damage, and cut me a check. If the body shop
I take it to disagrees on the price, they are supposed to take it up
with the insurance. I don't know if I want them to write me a check on
Thursday... I just worry it won't be enough (I'm probably going to need
a new door), and then I'm going to get screwed over.

The insurance company is Progressive.

Also, could I take the money, and find a used door?

Thanks!!

2010-01-06 Thread Rich Thomas
I had a door fixed on the 98 Cad last summer. I went to the claim
place, they gave me a couple of body shops, went to one that jerked me
around, went to another that said they would do it for the price. I
think I got a check from the adjuster for whatever amount, held on to
it. Went to get the car, they had just sprayed a used door, left a few
dings and dents visible. WTF? Made them re-do it after playing
go-between with the adjuster (I want a new door, not a POS used one that
looks like a used one) and the body shop (they paid us to put on a used
door) -- got the used door redone, dings filled, resprayed. I guess it
looks OK but it needs to be adjusted a bit now, which the shop said they
would do if I brought it by. I think I just gave the check to the shop,
never cashed it or paid them from my money.

It depends on how the ins guy figures the cost of fixing it -- new door,
used door, fix existing door, etc. Any more than that you might have to
exert yourself a lot, although after calling the ins co directly they
told me their goal was to make me happy within the constraints of
putting a lot of money into an 11 yr old car (which is/was in excellent
condition), which I guess is reasonable.

I'm amazed at what little beating a body shop is willing to do on a modern car.
Sounds like yours is stretched enough that the options would be new door, new
outer skin, or used door, all of which would have a fair bit of paint labor
involved. New door shell might be cheaper than used door plus prep work.

AFAIK, there are three levels of new body parts; crap, CAPA certified, and OE.
When a friend put a new hood on his chevy last year, the prices at the local
body shop were about $100 for crap and $125 for certified. He went with
certified, which seemed to be identical to the old one.

A GOOD body shop would not put a bunch of bondo on your door. BTW, the factory
uses such leveling components during their production also.

That all being said, what concerns me in these issues is that the tin knocker
will invertiblely use a torch to shrink the stretched metal.. This burns the
rust protection of the inside of the skin. I require that I inspect the 'blind'
side to see that it was properly primed and painted. Never had a GOOD body shop
complain.

Long time ago {40+ years}, I used to work at a body shop to pay tuition. Hard
to believe how bad 'new' parts were when they came in, full of dent and dings
due to shipping. Door skins were amongst the worse. They had to be prepped
prior to painting. Much of the door hardware would have to be RR, lots of
things to go wrong here!

A 'used' body part was usually straight when we got it. It was the same age as
the car. It fitted 100%.

Today, when you buy 'new' parts, you will probably be supplied knock-off parts
that are real crap.

I second that. About 5 years ago a shelf broke in my garage at about 4 in
the morning and a large tool box slid into the front fender of wife.gov's 96
Volvo 850. Left the perfect imprint of the tool box. I ordered a new
fender - which showed up looking pretty bad. Body guy fixed the old fender
vs. using the replacement. On the flip side - Prices on these replacement
parts are sure dirt cheap - and the quality reflects the price.

Re: [MBZ] CDI Got stoned -- Insurance Question

2010-01-06 Thread Peter Hertzing
I had someone with Progresssive plow into the side of one of my limos at an
intresection on a motorcycle. I was fairly pleased with Progressive - but
on the flip side thier adjuster had never touched a limo before, so they
just did what my body guy reccomeneded - which even i thought was a little
over the top.

The anecdotal evidence is that progressive is not likely to pay for a

Some stupid kids decided it would be fun to throw rocks at my CDI... So now
there is a fist sized dent in the door, and some gouges inside the dent.
Kids got away before my brother (who was borrowing the car) could catch
 them.

So now I get to make a comprehensive claim! Yay! *rolls eyes*

The claims guy says I take it to the local adjuster this Thursday, they'll
put a price on the damage, and cut me a check. If the body shop I take it
to disagrees on the price, they are supposed to take it up with the
insurance. I don't know if I want them to write me a check on Thursday...
I just worry it won't be enough (I'm probably going to need a new door),
and then I'm going to get screwed over.

 The insurance company is Progressive.

Also, could I take the money, and find a used door?

 Thanks!!
 John

I would get several estimates before going to see their adjuster.

John, I doubt they are going to have to replace the door to fix it,
worse case only the door skin Most likely they will be about to pull
the dent out just fine and repaint it.

There is a fist sized dent... it wasn't some little itty bitty rock.

Need a new door? Was the one on the car 'new'? You expectations are
too high, you are supposed to be 'made whole', not rich

Uhhh... it didn't have a dent in it. To be 'made whole' I don't want a
bunch of bondo 1.5 thick on the car.

BTW, I don't want to be made rich, I was just curious about the used
door thing. The nearest dealer is two hours away, and I really don't
want to fool with getting the car there and back for the body work.
