Well, I got a text back from the guy. He decided to hold on to the not free
stuff, and I picked up the rest. Some of it garbage, but there is a Hella
euro headlamp in adequate condition. There is other stuff that is covered in
oil, which I will need to cleanse before I can put in the parts area. We had
snow and cold overnight and will not be able to play with the hose for a few

Re: [MBZ] CL idiot

2018-02-22 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
The demographics for our group cut across a wide swath of socioeconomics. You
would see people asking for clothing and stuff on a regular basis, but I had to
put a stop to a lot of it, mainly because people would not make specific
requests. If you’re not familiar with FreeCycle, one of the tenets is to ask
for specific items, not make a general request for something like “household
goods” or “anything you can spare”. This ends up having people try and turn
the place into a charity, which is not the intent.

It was clear there were some who would try to get things just to resell them,
which is also a no-no. Same thing with pets. Most groups ban the FreeCycling
of animals for this reason. Our group did the same, after a member was caught
trying to sell puppies they had gotten (for free) from another member.

FREECYCLE in my area is very picky. Folks ask for specific items and
emphasize that whatever they get MUST be in excellent condition.

And there is some great stuff on offers. I got a waffle maker. I also

FreeCycle used to be a good place to get stuff. I was the local group admin
and everyone was on moderation, so I got to see the offerings first. For the
most part I didn’t jump on stuff before it posted, but I will admit to doing it

Got a really nice shop vac that hangs in a rack on the wall with all the

2012-12-06 Thread Michael Canfield
One of the worst cars I ever made the mistake of buying came from Tampa.
Red, 2 door delta 88. Sharp looking car, ran and drove perfect. Should
have looked under it better. That thing was like Swiss cheese everywhere
underneath. Had to sell it off for a parts car when suspension parts
started to rust off from it.

I guess I like the nostalgic look of the pagoda-like roof on the SL's
hardtop. I keep scheming for ways to get that on the SLC. Luckily, I sold
it before getting the torch and hammers out. The hardtop welded onto the SL
would be my ultimate 107 (with an OM603 engine).

Had a girlfriend once whose dream car was this. Did _not_ want

No need to weld it on, it's pretty secure with the five locks.

The bigger issue is finding somebody with that sort of patience and pocket book

Maybe.

I put money on the SL owners being willing to pay for a reasonable example of a
SLC to use as parts over somebody plunking down hard cash to then have to pay
five times purchase price to sort it out.

Re: [MBZ] CL idiot of the week

2012-12-04 Thread clay monroe
There are so darn many of the R107 that the amount of cash required to make
this one a viable driver is a multiple of the value of the car.

Though fewer SLC were made, the model is not desirable for a collector or
normal buyer. They rot out and are not cared for because they are a lesser
version. The rear seat is no more useful than the package shelf in the SL, so
not able to carry passengers. Did I mention they rust out? Bad

M117 is not the simple engine to work on the way a OM engine is. Being a V
engine you have to double work to keep it running. Dual head shop time, so
twice as much $$. Mechanicals need to be sourced from a W116, which is more
valuable in good condition than the SLC. You would still need to send the
engine out for work.

About the only way an SLC would have value in the condition this one is, would
to be the ultra rare 5.0 engine of 78-80.

There is so much inventory of actual running cars available, a dead one is
pretty much a parts car. The K-jet parts will be useful in the 380 as well as
the 560, which are both better cars than the 1980 107. Since the car is a
mess of 114/116 body parts and the newer SE engines are probably a better swap
in, bothering to keep this car pure renders this a worthless parts car.

You could order leather as an option, as you could cloth as well. If I recall,
it did add some time to delivery, since neither was a stock option for the US
spec cars, I believe.

When my Dad ordered his 81 380SL, I remember them giving him the choices, but
discouraging him from ordering them.

Last seen by a dealers authorized mechanic on the day it was sold. Paint
given special care daily. Always parked in the shade under a tree. Only
driven at night in pursuit of business. Slight tear in seat from normal
sidearm wear. Extra storage built into upholstery for money and
product. No offer refused, need bail money now.
;),, sorry.. just couldn't resist

Actually, with a few thousand dollars in a total frame off restoration, it
might be someones dream

Nope. I am not going to waste good cash on a turd like that car. The fellow
has no clue as to the value of his rust heap. I looked at a number of cars in
the past five months and I saw what the water does to them. One fellow had a
running example that was surely a flood car. Rust everywhere, corrosion on all
parts that could corrode. Interior was shot. Flood car will percolate for the
next three months until summer arrives, then bake the decay in deep. There is
no saving the car, but to strip it completely and rebuild. 107 is not that
rare a person should bother. Unless of course somebody famous passed on inside
it while eating fried bologna, banana and peanut butter sandwhich.

The first time I was just frustrated but apparently that one sentence makes
people take you seriously. I've gotten much more seller attention afterward.

When we first began to purchase used Mercedes in northern VA and then
suburban MD, it seemed like 90 percent of the sellers were Iranians. I
have a pretty good ear for their pronunciation and syntax, and this CL post
sounds like a literal spelling of Iranian-pronounced English. What might
have happened is the guy wasn't fluent or confident in his written English
so he used Dragon naturally speaking (?) or similar software to generate
the text. I pass no judgment on his educational level as a lot of Iranians
were displaced professionals who emigrated to the US to escape the Khomeini
regine.

I think ebonics is actually derived from Gullah, which was slave
english (actually a hodgepodge of various languages/pronunciations,
including African and European). Most of my neighbors are Gullah, and
speak Gullah, which sounds a lot like Jamaican English when they get
going, but also seems to be the root of the ebonics that is prevalent
all over the country. I'm guessing it all started with the slaves here,
who were the first to be brought to the US, from Barbados initially then
Africa directly, and sorta spread with subsequent arrivees and the
diaspora. I am told it sorta developed as a general language everyone
could communicate in using various bits of their own original languages.

This is all conjecture, not being a linguist, but being here in the
midst of the mother tongue it sure seems like it.

I don't think the CL idiot was communicating in ebonics, he was probably
just a dumbass.
