If you are going to buy a refurbished saw, it might be wise to use it lots quickly in order to establish that it is a good one (while you have the warranty in place). Re: [MBZ] Chain saws
The 450 and 445 are the only two saws I would consider. Anything else is a toy saw. For a trimming saw I'm going electric, never going back to a gas saw. They're lighter, don't vibrate as bad, quieter and safer because the chain stops a lot more quickly when you let go of the trigger. We've got this little guy: https://www.harborfreight.com/lawn-garden/outdoor-power-tools/chainsaws-chippers/cordless-chainsaws/20v-cordless-10-in-chainsaw-tool-only-64940.html It's cut several cords of wood. I do want to get a 6ah battery for it, I don't know how big the one we've got is, 3ah maybe. I still have work in me when the battery quits, not a lot but enough to keep going a little longer. -Curt On Tuesday, March 7, 2023 at 07:27:15 PM EST, Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes wrote: If you look at their store, they have a bunch of different models available if you wanted a smaller one. I don’t know, I just know that I have a friend who owns a lot of acres and cuts down a lot of trees and has a sawmill told me to buy a Stihl so that’s what I bought. On the other hand, I hired a tree guy to take down some big trees last year and his big chainsaws were Husqvarnas. For use around the house I'll never go back to a gas string trimmer. I've got an 18v Makita that's great. At camp we have a B that is also pretty good. For heavy brush I have an old Husky straight shaft pro model but it rarely gets broken out these days. -Curt On Thursday, March 2, 2023 at 11:33:55 AM EST, MG via Mercedes wrote: I have a Greenworks 16" 40V saw that I bought some 5-6 years ago. We have a Worx mini 10” 20v chainsaw that has a pole to convert it into a pole saw. It was good enough to cut a tree that had fallen onto our chain link fence last June. The tree was about 5” thick. We had the weed whacker as well with 3 batteries between them. It’s just what we need for occasional cutting and trimming. Re: [MBZ] Chain saws
Mine’s a Stihl that I bought off FBM or CL, I don’t recall. It was running when I bought it, but I suspect that even though I ran it out of fuel and have only used ethanol free fuel in it, the carb is crudded up just from lack of use. I really need to get it sorted before hurricane season starts. -D > On Mar 2, 2023, at 8:51 AM, Curt Raymond via Mercedes > wrote: > > One of the guys in the snowmobile club fought a Poulan Pro for years. Re: [MBZ] Chain saws
We've got a Harbor Freight cordless saw at camp. It works great for a trimming saw and for taking small firewood. https://photos.app.goo.gl/VfawMmz3d8NBTuh96 In the picture I've cut all the wood in the tractor bucket on that one small battery. We should get a larger battery or a larger saw. Makita makes a 36v saw that uses 2x 18v batteries. I've got a circular saw that works the same way. That saw is highly rated, priced like a gas saw though... For the gas saw I use nothing but canned gas and I've had way fewer problems since I started that. -Curt On Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at 10:21:32 PM EST, Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes wrote: Has anyone bought an electric chain saw? Re: [MBZ] Chain saws
I have a corded sears chainsaw I bought maybe 30yr ago. I get it out occasionally around the house where I can plug it in, and have used it with that little HF $80 generator but the saw strains the generator. The handle guard broke years ago so it’s probably dangerous as hell to use but for the occasional quick use it’s great. It’s basically a circ saw with a bar. I think I’ve taken the switch apart a coupla times to get it working again. I want to get my dad’s Homelite XL12 chainsaw working. I no think it needs a fuel pickup or something which last I looked for one was NLA. It’s probably close to 60yo as I recall my dad picking it up off the Dog, my uncle worked for a tractor shop or something that sold the things and he got it and shipped it to my dad. --FT Sent from iFōn > On Mar 1, 2023, at 10:21 PM, Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes > wrote: > > Has anyone bought an electric chain saw? Re: [MBZ] Chain saws
As my brother the mechanic points out: Fuel, compression, spark. You need all three. For 'sudden', but quiet failures it's either a clogged fuel system, or a failure of the spark. Change the plug, check that it sparks suitably when you pull the rope. It is unlikely that the timing slipped, not the way they're constructed. (More magneto than otherwise.) It's usually a fuel problem. (Two-strokes need a good crankcase seal, else they don't work. Those can age and eventually fail. Not sure how you test/prove those.) Pull the carb and clean it. Maybe even drop $15 on a new one. Make sure the fuel pickup sinker in the tank is in good shape, that its feed hoses aren't leaking air. I had to replace that on my 036 not too long ago. Plastic/rubber sucks almost as hard as batteries, and does not last forever. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Understood. Wasn’t sure what you were looking to do. I have always been amazed by the Honda walk behind mower I had for 6-7 years that I never did a thing to other than change oil and once a spark plug. No choke or other fiddly bits, just “stop” and “run”. That thing started on the first pull, every flipping time, and never failed to start. Re: [MBZ] Chain saws
Many years ago I bought a Homelite (?) plug-in saw. It has always worked when I needed it, though it's weak and small compared to my two Stihl saws. I'm not sure which would piss me off more: getting a cranky gas saw started, or dealing with aging batteries. The plug-in saw has neither drawback. For a quick branch or three, within easy reach of a plug, it's a no-brainer. For a mobile current bush, an inverter on the truck would be easy. For anything of any size or duration, the Stihl 036 all day long. It's not _that_ hard to get started. For limbing I use a lighter Stihl MS170, but at only 1.6HP it's feeble compared to the 4.5HP of the 036. -- Jim > On Mar 1, 2023, at 7:21 PM, Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes > wrote: > > Has anyone bought an electric chain saw?
