That West Trashley ML looks pretty beat, seller couldn't even be bothered
to vacuum out the leaves and dirt.

"AC just needs a charge", isn't that a "Don't walk, run" flag? I'd have to
show up with a charge of R134 and my leak detector and try to prove him
right or wrong?

Yeah look at that link I sent, it had the cap (along with the dip wire and wire
plug deal) which appeared to be just a plastic tube cork without a locking
thing. This ML actually has one there now, cork with no locking thingie.

I ordered stuff from Advance Auto the other day, with the 25% off coupon and
free shipping it was a pretty good deal. Showed up on the porch and mailbox
with no effort but a few clicks.

The 722.6 dipstick tool measures the fluid level from the bottom of the pan,
instead of from the top of the tube like a normal dipstick.

If you don't want to wait for one from Amazon, you can go down to West Marine
and buy a chunk of 1x19 stainless rigging wire, just needs to be long enough to
reach the bottom of the pan. Then measure the length of the wet part of the
wire.

I don't see the red lock pins for the dipstick tube cap anywhere locally except
the dealer, Autozone catalogs them but doesn't stock them in the stores near me.

I'll give you $1500 for it, once you've got this all sorted out, if it has

one spring Mitch linked to be sufficient?

That site has all the components listed, this spring seems to be the one
related to the reported issue as Mitch observed.

This spring along with a fluid/filter change and general look-around
seems a lot easier than pulling the tranny and throwing a $500 pump at
it, or swapping in a dubious used one at $250.  They also list some pump
bushings, I guess I would have to pull the pump to see what that is
about if indeed the pump is inop

I have no experience with those transmissions - but in theory...

Weak spring causes low pressure.  Fluid is thick when cold and so
has plenty of pressure.  warm/hot fluid is thin, pressure drops,
 transmission can't hold.

Sounds good - but a pressure regulator should maintain a
particular pressure - unless it's just a pressure limiter.

 All just speculation *smiles*

Re: [MBZ] I'm thinking about this. CARFAX???

2018-08-24 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Gerry's got a good point, I think there were two relatively simple / cheap
fixes, the conductor plate and some other connection on the trans where the
o-ring fails and allows ATF to wick up into the wiring bundle and cause
havoc.

It has also been mentioned that a weak battery will cause a low voltage
condition which manifested as transmission problems, so monitoring the
electrical system / measuring the system voltage when cold and comparing to
the "hot enough that the tranny dies" may be worth keeping in mind.

I have no experience with those transmissions - but in theory...

Weak spring causes low pressure. Fluid is thick when cold and so
has plenty of pressure. warm/hot fluid is thin, pressure drops,
transmission can't hold.

Sounds good - but a pressure regulator should maintain a
particular pressure - unless it's just a pressure limiter.

Dipstick?
The 722.6 was designed to use very good fluid, and to last a lifetime, or at
least the life of the warranty, without changing or checking the fluid.
Therefore the "dipstick tube" has a cap on it, not a dipstick in it.

At least during the warranty period, dirt introduced while checking the fluid
was deemed more damaging than any fluid level variations not associated with
huge puddles in the garage, so seal the cap and don't let anybody open it.

Anyway, it would be good to know that he put the right stuff in it and the
right amount of it before going forward with transmission replacement. I doubt
that even DexIII would make it work that badly in the short term, but if it's
overfilled and foaming...

Does Rich have the fluid level measuring tool and a replacement lock pin for
the cap?

When I bought my first 722.6, I read something about spring failures, and
bought an upgrade spring or two to put in the valve body. The guy who replaced
my conductor plate put my super upgrade parts in too, but he thought the idea
was totally silly.
But now I'm wondering what happens if those springs go bad, does it act like
Rich's new ML?

Well I picked this thing up today. The guy said he was trying to buy it off the
owners who had listed it on CL and he was dickering with them then they traded
it in to the BMW dealer who auctioned it off and CoPart bought it. He tracked
it down and bought it off them. I have the titles do all that’s good.

The guy was thinking he might get lucky tonight and thanked me for it, we
closed at $1200.

Now I need to think about why this tranny might work OK cold but then stops
working when it gets hot, then has no pressure and car won’t go. I’m not sure
why a pump would go bad like that, I’m wondering if it’s seals or something
like that. I guess that would still require dropping the tranny.

I think the owner could sell it at CoPart, but I can't imagine why.

You'd know more about SC tax and license fees than I would. That auction info
site that claimed to have the $825 bid price for CoPart said that the high
bidder was from SC.

In Michigan, the $369 in CoPart fees covers the title fee, plus there's a $39
bidding fee making an $800 car into a $1208 car.
Unless he bid it through a dealer instead of on his own account, then the
CoPart fees would be $125 less but he'd be paying fees to the dealer too.
With a clean title I'd just assumed he bought it as an individual like I would
have.

$825 at CoPart is $825+408+tax, $125 less if you're a dealer.
It was sold on approval, so the seller could come back with "I'll let you have
it for $900", or the seller could just accept the $825.
If I had a 20 year old ML with 300k, nonoriginal engine, and driveability
issues, I'd jump on the $825 in a wholesale world and get it off my inventory.

In a retail world, you're dealing with a guy who's got $1250, taxes, a
conductor plate, fluid (hopefully the right fluid), diagnosis charges, and a
bunch of wasted time in it and really doesn't want to lose money just because
he bet he could fix it easily and lost.

Sent him this.  Will see what he says.

The boy might be a slickster, or maybe he found it cheap and bought it
and then realized he was getting in over his head, hence his wife all
over his ass.

$825 in it, and whatever parts and such and some fooling around with it,
my $1200 doesn't seem unreasonable.  Can get a used tranny for $239 so
maybe that wouldn't be too bad but would still have to change it out,
doesn't look too bad.

And carfax says the po traded it in at a dealer in Georgia who sent it off to
auction. Don't you hate being lied to?
I wonder what a 300k mi 1999 ML320 with drivetrain issues sells for at a dealer

Oh, here we go, $825 plus fees. Throw in a conductor plate and he's not getting

Re: [MBZ] I'm thinking about this. CARFAX???

2018-08-21 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I looked at this ML.  It is really nice, extremely clean for a 20yo car,
he bought it of the original owner 3 months ago knowing the tranny was
bad but figured it was an easy fix.  Has full service records, the PO
did all the proper maintenance etc.   AC was BLOWING ICE COLD, seemed
the fan was growling though and not blowing too hard, bearings dry maybe?

The PO put a new engine in it about 100kmi ago but he says the tranny
loses pressure when it gets hot, it works fine at first but then
nothing.  Shop put their computer on it and it said no pressure so they
think the pump is bad.  I'm wondering if it could just be seals, but I
guess the tranny would still need to come out to replace seals.  He said
he put on a new conductor plate, cleaned the valve body, but still
nothing so he doesn't want to fool with it and his wife is on his ass to
get rid of it.

Young guy, nice (likes cars and guns), 8month baby and 2yo, I can
sympathize.  He is asking $1650, I offered $1200.  He says if I get it
today he'll take $1400 after being firm on the $1650, he came back out
after I was driving off.  Wonder how much tomorrow...

Anyway, Kleb could you run a CARFAX please?

I have to look more on this tranny issue, this could be a really nice
car.  Tempting... but some heavy work.

I'm gonna go take a look at this.  I'm thinking with the cost and work
required to drop the tranny and buy/replace the part or a whole tranny
this is at best a $500 car.  It looks pretty nice though.  I'm gonna
go take a look at it a bit later today.

Vehicle needs a transmission pump. Very clean 1 owner non-smoker. Runs
great.

$548.95 kinda spendy

Looks like it is inside the tranny?  So the tranny would need to be
dropped and this bit replaced?  I'm wondering if a used tranny from
something would be cheaper. Ebay has them all over the place, $350 on up.

If it involves some major work to R the tranny, etc that could be a big job. I aksed
the guy how he knows it is the pump is shot, he says "I had Europro diagnose it."
