I was fortunate to have a wrecking yard about a mile-and-a-half from our house in Austin that had an imported European 123.130 (the exact same type of car I was trying to make, but this one was that way from the factory) in its stock. I got a number of parts from that car including the transmission, driveshaft, pedal hangers, and maybe the correct OM617 manual transmission flywheel (though they could have had that in the shop). It was in the yard because its #1 piston had come out the side of the block. Coincidentally (or maybe not), the #1 port on the head into the exhaust manifold was very carboned up. Is this incorrect? As shipped from the factory, this is correct. Since I did not notice anyone else making this point, I'm ready to be told that I misunderstood. So correct me. You just don't have the background the others who have been on the list for a long time have. When I was in graduate school in Austin, Texas, I purchased a 1982 240D with an automatic transmission. After driving it awhile, the automatic transmission broke most severely deep inside. In looking at the options we had for getting it running again, - replacing the transmission with a rebuilt automatic, - replacing the transmission with a 4-speed manual, and, - replacing the engine with a 5-cylinder engine and replacing the transmission with a 4-speed manual, my wife and I decided to take the third option. So, I converted the car by: - changing the engine - changing the radiator - changing the flywheel - changing the transmission - changing the driveshaft by getting a correct one from a nearby wrecking yard and having it rebuilt by Driveline Service of Atlanta - changing the brake pedal hanger to one from a manual transmission - installing the clutch dropout switch for the cruise control - changing the automatic transmission lockout switch wiring to connect to the clutch dropout switch - installing the clutch master cylinder and hose to the brake fluid reservoir and hard line to slave cylinder - changing the differential - replacing the rear axle half-shafts - replacing the front brake calipers (which rusted in the Texas humidity from sitting so long) - changing the speedometer to match the new differential - improving the light pipes in the instrument cluster - replacing the seat upholstery and cleaning up the mechanisms - maybe other things I don't recall Complicating the process was the delivery of the replacement engine. The parts arrived in town and were delivered by one fellow and a truck with a narrow lift gate. As he started to lower the lift gate, the whole pallet fell off. (No, I'm not kidding.) It landed on the front of the engine and then rolled toward the passenger's side of the engine. It ended up resting, mostly upside down, on the rear end of the camshaft cover, the edge of the pallet, and the back of the transmissiion. My first post to an earlier version of this list about the problem was on 19 August 1999. The fellows on this list were most helpful in guiding me in getting the conversion done. Rusty, the sponsor of this list, was very helpful in getting me the parts I needed at good prices. After much haggling with the trucking company and the involvement of the Students' Attorney the University had as a benefit for the students, the trucking company took the original engine and transmission away and paid for a replacement (which came from Dallas not the east coast and thus were not rusty). Anyway, the car has been running well for about 50 kmi, until recently when it developed a diesel leak which I have not yet fixed. Re: [MBZ] Inspecting for Rust and other questions for 85 123 Estate Wagon
Hey Craig, thanks. Wow, hope you get back to work soon. My post acceptance was late for my purchase, so I found my 6" binder with about 1,300 posts and used it a guide. Cannot say how grateful I am to have found this list in 2000. What car do you own again? I picked the car up yesterday morning. I looked in all these areas...we had the car up on the lift, the headlights and the housings were replaced. No rust inside. Stone pan clean, jack holes clean. But, I did find a few small spots down at the bottom of the doors; the previous owner used a knife; it was hard, solid. It appears as just surface rust. And next to the sunroof...the surface is rough, not flaking or anything. In the compartment where the rear-end hydraulic fluid reservoir is located; nothing. Spare storage, nothing, except a small area with a plug in it, there is a hole in the plug. I lifted up the flat rubber plastic in back (no third seat in this one) nothing except sand, leaves, trash, etc. Popped open the seats (very cool) reminded me of the M100 jump seats. No rust but some white stuff...like how steel oxidizes or something, what is that? No sign of mildew or mold under the mats though. No smell. Nothing is soft, it is all hard metal. I am taking the car to my guy next week after I get it titled and registered. He was going to do the repair on my current 4Dr. at $5,000 - $6,000 UNTIL, the two gigantic tree branches landed on my roof and trunk in June. The tree still stands! It took me all summer to get over it; and the thought of losing the car. I got a rental for about a week. Nice car, but well I don't need to say it; we all know. I was so glad to get back in my 123, cold drafts and all! How on earth do people see out of the rear window of these newer cars???So, if there is something I missed I want know NOW, not 9 years from now, like on the current vehicle. I did not see it on a lift when I bought it in 2000. On the 4Dr. I only saw rust on the stone pan and the jack holes, which I had repaired. My guy saw it over the summer, and said, it was an OK job but not done quite right. That is when I learned about all the rest of it. I had no idea all of that was happening under there. The car was leased by the CEO of the PA Power Company. I have many records, but you know it was snow and salt driven. There will be NO snow driving this year, in either one. It is horrible here, just a mention of snow, and the trucks are out like an army. So, I am working on how to fix it enough to put in a new rear window. I am not spending a lot on it given the rust issues now. However, the shrink wrap and the painters plastic cloth is getting old!Other questions??? I am not that familiar with this model, though I always thought it was fine! I do know the rear suspension is different and I have seen some sagging in the back; I guess they did not do proper maintenance? 1. How would one install a sound system, including a sub-woofer? No, I don't need loud, just deep base so I can feel the guy plucking the strings in a jazz trio, or those low notes that Sara Vaughn hits with ease as a child plays in the sand box. I thought it would great NOT to remove the original Becker. I installed a Clarion in the 4Dr. The buttons are symmetrical; a must. I looked today trying to imagine where speakers would go. Reuss Systems (post from way back) quoted me $2,500 for the 4Dr. He said the 123 was one of the most difficult cars to tune the sound.2. The black carpets in the back have faded of course, so at some point I will replace. All carpets are original and in good shape for 27 years.3. Who fabricates custom mats, like if I send a template in? I want two pieces I can lay out in the back with a lip around the edge.4. What is different about the transmission?5. My post acceptance was late for my purchase, so I found my 6 binder with about 1,300 posts and used it a guide. Cannot say how grateful I am to have found this list in 2000. Finding the binder was very handy! What car do you own again? I now have two. The one I have had since my days in graduate school in Texas is a 1982 240D with a 5-cylinder, naturally-aspirated engine and a 4-speed manual transmission. In other words, a 1982 240D/3.0. The other car I bought from Donald Snook of this list. It's a 1995 E320 gasoline. No rust but some white stuff...like how steel oxidizes or something, what is that? Rust is oxidized steel (iron). The white stuff is most likely residue from the chemicals in the water that evaporated there. No sign of mildew or mold under the mats though. No smell. Nothing is soft, it is all hard metal. It sounds good, then. Where are you located? (I'm in Los Alamos, New Mexico.) It took me all summer to get over it; and the thought of losing the car. I'm sorry your car got crushed by those tree branches. How on earth do people see out of the rear window of these newer cars??? I have no idea, and dislike them for the same reason. So, if there is something I missed I want know NOW, not 9 years from now, like on the current vehicle. Good idea. I wish you success in properly evaluating the new MB. Other questions??? I am not that familiar with this model, though I always thought it was fine! I do know the rear suspension is different and I have seen some sagging in the back; I guess they did not do proper maintenance? You will need to have someone with experience with the self-leveling suspension to chime in. 1. How would one install a sound system, including a sub-woofer? I cannot help you there. 2. The black carpets in the back have faded of course, so at some point I will replace. All carpets are original and in good shape for 27 years. Talk with Rusty, (800) 741-5252, to see if they are still available. 3. Who fabricates custom mats, like if I send a template in? I want two pieces I can lay out in the back with a lip around the edge. 4. What is different about the transmission? As one of the other responders said, it has a torque converter with a higher stall speed. That will help starting off the line, but apparently will lower fuel mileage. 5. I think that is about it, other than anything I should know. Is there a group for TD Wagons? No need to go looking for another group for your wagon; there are several on this list that have 123 wagons. Hopefully, they will speak up.
