Re: [MBZ] OT: Audi Allroad?
Follow up: We ended up getting her a '94 Audi 100 CS Quattro wagon. It's quite nice, and the V6 engine bay has tons of room (which I'll need when I change the timing belt in 45k). Dark Green metallic with black leather, heated seats and a rear diff lock. It drives and handles nice, and feels substantial...but, not quite MB substantial. Oh, and I convinced myself that I needed to pick up a $250 '89 Audi 90 Quattro, which will probably become my beater winter car. a $250 '89 Audi 90 Quattro, which will probably become my beater winter car. There was an '89 Audi 90Q on Craigslist with 197K miles on it for $2000 in nice shape with good mechanicals. The ad stated that it was a reliable car that would run forever. I've never owned any other German cars besides Mercedes'. Re: [MBZ] OT: Audi Allroad?
I ended up with a wrecked '89 Audi 90 Quattro (w/diff lock) that I picked up for $250. I stripped it down, and it needs a new front clip, but all the damaged parts are bolt-on items, and can be easily found for cheap. Didn't hit the frame rails and just smacked the cam sprocket and auxilliary radiator, which can be bipassed. The interior is in wonderful shape, with killer seats I wish could be adapted to fit my TD. Should make a nice sub $1k winter rig, as an interim solution until something better comes along. Re: [MBZ] OT: Audi Allroad?
Yeah, those Audi/VW/Volvo diesel are noisy, especially at idle. The worst offender is actually the vaccum pump, as the operating rod is in two parts. They clack. It also has much more combustion noise, as the prechambers are much smaller and more open. It does turn out quite a bit of power, though, and is higher compression (105 hp on 2.4L) -- factory compression is supposed to be 23:1, but with manufacturing variables, it tends to run a big high -- sometimes 26:1 on a new engine. Turbo boost is fairly low (10.5 psi limit). Volvo makes marine engines with similar high compression and output -- great fun to read the specifications as they weigh quite a bit less and are somewhat smaller than the equivalent Detroits. Peter

Peter Frederick wrote: It does turn out quite a bit of power, though, and is higher compression (105 hp on 2.4L) Is that the six cylinder? 105hp won't keep up with the BMW 2.4L, or a MBZ 602 five cyl. I have seen a Volvo in one of the Finns' videos which seems to be about as fast as the 603 in a W201 hot rods, mainly because it launches harder. Mitch.

My parents had a '95 Cherokee that they replaced in '01 because it had NO floor under the passenger side. All the way from the firewall to the rear seat was gone. The passenger seat was even missing one bolt that had fallen through the brace. Apparently the windshield leaked which is apparently fairly common. My in-laws have a '96 with the same leak which I've tried to fix with flowable silicon twice. Its only just a tiny leak now but The gasket is nice and pliable. I took it to a glass shop and the guy didn't want to replace it, said it looked fine. -Curt Date: Tue, 2 Jan 2007 19:52:42 -0500 (EST) From: John W. The 1990/1991 cherokees had a crappy integral (bendix-9) ABS system- integral meaning that the ABS hydraulic pressure was used for boost (a la vacuum booster)... The master cylinder (Actuator) had crappy seals that would fail allowing pressure bleed (and air suck), resulting in extended run times for the ABS pressure pump, and the pump would burn out. These things also had an accumulator that is suspiciously like the spheres used in the rear of a TD. (with similar results) The ABS actuator (and perhaps pump too) were subject of a safety recall and are subject to a secret lifetime warranty. Needless to say, no matter what any book tells you, you CANNOT buy a master cylinder for a 1991 cherokee. It was listed by bendix but was for a 1992 or later... Oh yeah, the sphere is not covered (of course), and is ~$200 last I looked. ObChrysler: the neighbors dog irrigated the left front tyre and the thing did not want to start for a week! Re: [MBZ] OT: Audi Allroad?
I agree with your wife, a rear wheel drive Mercedes is not the greatest in the snow ice. But I have another solution. As well as Mercedes fans, we've also been long term Jeep fans. My Wife bought a 2006 4WD Grand Cherokee with a V6 last year and she loves it. The system is a full time 4WD it uses the brakes to lock down any wheel that spins. She does need it since she works in Wisconsin. I've driven the jeep in the snow and the 4WD system works great. The only downside is that it's not the heavy duty 4WD system that you'd use for rock crawling but we don't do that anyway. If you want the heavy duty traditional 4WD system, you have to buy a V8 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The mileage penalty was 1 MPG under the V6 without 4WD. And the best part is - I got her 2001 Grand Cherokee! Re: [MBZ] OT: Audi Allroad?
Well, from personal experience I can say that a well designed system has no reason not to lug around all that extra stuff. I've had and known more than a couple Suby's and The only AWD issue I ever recall was a minor tendancy for the center clutches to grab around turns which was only because we hadn't yet changed the tranny fluid at around 90K miles. It was fine after we changed the fluid. Otherwise in normal driving you never have any wheels slipping and with Blizzaks on, it almost never slips even in snow and slush. I don't recall the earlier 2wd models getting much more mileage. I agree, you don't *need* AWD most of the time, but I would MUCH prefer ANY vehicle I buy to have AWD... That said, I have no experience with Audi's Quattro setup, but it should only be a better system since it also uses traction control to get the side-side traction so that it should be capable of true 4WD. And the All-Road is definitely a model I liked with the air suspension. Casey - OK, you didn't mention a spending cap. So how about looking over 4Matic used M-Bs? The StarMark site (under MBUSA) might surprise you After all, there's nothing as safe to have your Significant Other in than an M-B! (its a shame that we can't tap into the used ML 270 CDI market - those have been out for enough years in the rest of the world that they should be affordable, just not in the USA) Werner - Original Message - From: Zeitgeist [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Monday, January 01, 2007 2:45 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT: Audi Allroad? If she is able to do that, she needs Gump to keep her under control. Get her a nice old diesel go no where fast car with chains. Well, just a quick look at the MBUSA pre-owned list, shows a Silver '99 ML320 for $14K in Lynnwood, WA, and a White '99 ML430 for $18K in Fife - not that I would ever recommend a gas guzzler, but that shows for under 20K you can get an all-wheel drive M-B! Also, the '99 MLs don't have all the bugs out that the newer ones do, either. But most of the reported troubles were body related, such as rattles, rear hatch shocks, etc. The engines are pretty bulletproof, since they are used in lots of M-B cars.
