Re: [MBZ] OT Sears / Kenmore dryer repair

2016-10-16 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
On this dryer, no lint passes through the door. Primary suction point for
lint is at the bottom edge of the front panel. There is a lint screen that
pulls up for cleaning, and the frame that holds that screen in place can be
easily removed to clean out most of the suction side ducting before it goes
into the squirrel cage fan mounted on the front of the motor. I haven't
done that in a while, it looked pretty good when I had the panel off and so
I vacuumed out the end right before the fan. I confess that I could have
taken the screen frame out and gotten a bit more; if my house burns down
later this fall we'll know who to blame

Re: [MBZ] OT Sears / Kenmore dryer repair

2016-10-16 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
Yes, lint-clean-up was a major theme during the repair. A few years ago the
vent duct became detached from the back of the dryer for a month or two before
I caught it. The dryer was re-breathing lint, which probably contributed to
the rear drum bearing failure. There was an amazing amount of lint inside (and
behind) the dryer, which all was vacuumed up. The inside of the vent duct was
pretty clean but also was vacuumed up.

Today I did the deed, dryer is fixed! Left the dryer in top of the washer for
the repair. Rick's description was the best, big ball mounted on the rear of
the drum, rides in a plastic cup mounted on the rear wall of the dryer. I
bought the kit from appliance parts pro's, $24 delivered. I also replaced the
water lines to the washer while I had the stack pulled away from the wall.

Top of the dryer has spring clips at the front edge, hinge at the rear, YouTube
videos show the way.

Looks like this particular Kenmore was made by Frigidaire. Really a pretty
easy job, but took about half a day because I spent a lot of time cleaning up
17 years of accumulated lint and dust.

I did not (yet) replace the nylon strips that the front of the drum rides on,
that'll be next.

Ah okay. Front panel between washer and dryer Un screws. Then remove screws for
front and top. Take off. Unhook spring for idler pulley. Lift dr‎um and remove.
Replacement bearing is a stainless steel ball on drum, nylon cup on dryer back.
There is also a spring and ball bearing in the cup (static discharge) that
needs replaced too. Don't be surprised to find it packed full off lint, and
evidence of scorching on the felt drum seal at the rear. There are also uhmw
wear strips supporting the front of the drum to be replaced. Clean all the lint
front the inside of the door and that should do it.

Yes, that's about it. Remove top, remove front panel, loosen belt and use that
to lift up the drum and move forward out of the dryer.

On my sears driers the top tilts back, you have to undo the drive belt
by springing the tensioner underneath, then the whole drum can be lifted
out -- it has some kind of fabric sort of gasket in the front that it
moves on, and the rollers at the back, it is not fixed in there other
