SLK

But in way of a CLK:

A buddy sends this to me this morning

https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1810233736090166/

Looks really nice but I suggest something more like $3k given the top issues.
He says he might offer $2800 so I say go for it. Didn’t hear back but I sent it
to my buddy Todd who offers the guy 2800 and gets a laugh back.

So Todd calls me this evening and says guess what. His wife just drove up to
his shop in a blue CLK cabriolet. He says where’d you get that, she says she
saw it on FBMP and the seller is right in the neighborhood so she goes over to
look at it. Offers the guy $2500 and he says what the hell and sells it to her.

He says the car looks almost new. Interior is almost perfect. Put about 5oz of
fluid in the top pump and the top works fine but clearly it’s leaking a bit.

Hell of a deal.

Re: [MBZ] Good news/bad news CL600

2022-12-22 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I'll have to see what the WIS says, if it says.  I'm thinking this is
what the guy who had it left it at the dealer for, traded it in or
something then it went to a Copart auction.  I'm guessing like a 8-10hr
job by the book but I don't know, might not be that long but it appears
to be somewhat involved. The guy I bought it from said it was the oil
cooler issue but I'm not seeing any evidence of oil leak except a bit at
the rear around the bell housing, nothing significant.

Oh well, fun times...

that’s what’s causing poor running.

Ordered the part, $55, it came yesterday so I figured I could do a
quick swap. Wrong. There is no way to get the thing out without
removing (partially) the intake manifold as it lacks about an inch
or two of clearance to slide it out of its hole. Bugger. I curse

The battery and motor on this one are not very powerful, it appears the
idea was to help launch the car from a standstill, give a little boost
until the engine (a V6) was needed, make it feel a little peppier
maybe.  Since most drivers of these things (I am extrapolating from like
3 or 4 I have seen) are geezers who probably have no clue whatsoever,
and care nothing about performance, but they were cheaper and would get
better fuel mileage on the way to visit the grandkids, so that was the
attraction. And maybe the feel-good of "hybrid" warms their green
souls.  And maybe it would boost MB's CAFE a bit so we could get S65s
and what not.

Re: [MBZ] Good or bad snake?

2021-11-25 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
Hard to be sure from photo but I'd guess garter snake
https://herpsofnc.org/eastern-garter-snake/ or less common ribbon snake
https://herpsofnc.org/eastern-ribbon-snake/ , both non toxic.

The toxic snakes in the US are the coral snakes and vipers, which include
cotton mouth, copper head, and several rattle snakes. Several harmless snakes
resemble the coral snake but corral snakes have the distinctive "red-on-yellow
kill a fellow" color pattern. The vipers have a wide head and (of course)
rattlers rattle, usually.

2020-04-24 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Allan,

I'm not sure he sees a lot of W116 stuff, but it can’t hurt to ask. If he’s got
the right color leather he can repair seat covers, too, so that’s an option as
well.

His name is Craig and you can email him at: mscho...@sbcglobal.net

Tell him I sent you - I get nothing out of it other than the satisfaction of
getting him more business. He’s done a great job for me over the years and I
would love to see him be able to help more owners.

Who is your seat guy? I need the front seats and armrest recovered in my

side. I've never been sure who to look for to help with that.

Re: [MBZ] OT how bad could this be

2020-04-15 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Apparently RR uses something Castrol made called “RR363”. The alternative is
TRW PFM201 which appears to be identified as a mineral based oil.

In a quick Google search it appears that the older models used a DOT3 fluid for
brakes and suspension systems that had castor oil added to it for lubricity.

The 756 oil used in the SLS system is used in aircraft brakes. Perhaps RR uses

That guy Hoovie bought a “cheap “ Roller for $80k or so. He took it to his mech

sorted and apparently it was working fairly well. A lot of the parts are BMW

2020-04-14 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
I think I have told the story about my son the mechanic working on the
brakes of an old Rolls before but will do it again.

I don't know or remember all of the details so forgive me if I am a bit
vague.

This fellow had an old Rolls. Not sure of the vintage. Not ancient but
old - maybe from the 50's.

The brakes were essentially non existent. He brought it to their shop
because they did custom work on hotrods, race cars etc.

They looked at the brake system which was something quite unusual. If I
recall, it had some sort of hydraulic booster driven off the back of the
transmission. Parts were either unobtainium or silly expensive so they
looked for alternatives.

They installed a brake booster out of a Chevrolet and that improved
matters somewhat but not enough. This thing had massive drum brakes if I
recall correctly and they started looking at the brake mechanism for
clues as to why it did not work like they thought it should. Ultimately,
they elected to reverse the shoes in the drums. I think they put the
ones from the right side onto the left side etc. Totally backwards by
anyone's book, but it worked reasonably well. I don't think they felt
that the brakes had been put together wrong by previous mechanics.  My
son still did not think the brakes were good on the car but the owner
was happy as could be. He said they were much improved from the way it
was when he brought it in and felt it was safe to drive it. I think he
only used it in photo shoots for weddings or something like that so did
not intend to drive it cross country.

If anyone is truly interested, I will ask him and either correct my
guesses or add whatever detail he can provide. I know he should remember
this well.

Re: [MBZ] OT how bad could this be

2020-04-13 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Last brake job quote I got for a Rolls ran a bit over $8,500 with the
caveat "We won't really know until we get it all opened up and order the
parts." "It could run quite a bit more."

Rolls Royce: If you have to ask what it will cost, you can't afford one...
pretty much covers.

Re: [MBZ] OT how bad could this be

2020-04-13 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I highly doubt it or I would expect there would be something about it on the
web somewhere. It’s a common weak point you hear people gripe about any time
Rolls Royce comes up, or so it seems. I have no idea what the deal is unless
there’s something really unusual or unique about the brakes. You would think
they would be something designed and engineered for RR as opposed to an off the
shelf solution like the major manufacturers use.

I would be curious to know just for the heck of it. Anyone out there have any
background on RR?

Re: [MBZ] Really, really bad timing by the DOE

2020-03-12 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
Back in the 70s when we had the “oil shortage” I had a friend who worked for
BATX (I think it was called), company that owned a lot of tank cars and storage
facilities and such. He told me they had zero capacity to store or move any
more oil or refined products as all their tanks and tank cars were completely
full, tankers sitting on sidings everywhere they could park them. Producers
were holding product waiting for the prices to go up to where they could make
huge profits, which eventually they did.

It was the Jimmuh Cahtah MEOW (Moral Equivalent Of War) gas line alternating
purchase days... I miss him so much, he was the best president ever!

The oil business is running out of places to hide the excess. A bunch of
refiners are closed or burnt down, so the flow to process it ain’t what it used
to be. Toss in 10% corn ethyl, so less processing need. Electric cars need no
oil. Pretty soon there will be no more empty oil cars, as they will all be
fully laden and sitting on abandoned track spurs throughout the nation.

The hurricanes also took out a lot of the petro distribution and storage
infrastructure too. For example, our FL panhandle petro came by barge. So
we were shut down until docks rebuilt and intercoastal waterway restored.

Now if we could just find a source of helium…

The Saudis are really trying to slap Pootie’s bag. They’re clearly quite
unhappy. Their economy is not in that great of shape, so dumping oil isn’t
going to help.

we've been over the saud clan for over a year.

Why:  to be able to stabilize the market.
Why:  We stockpile every other component of national defense.  Hitler
ran out of fuel.   Patton ran out of fuel.   having fuel reserves is a
national defense issue.   This is the first time I had heard the gress
of cons is dipping into the cookie jar.
Why:  The gov used to buy up things like milk, cheese, grain, peanut
butter and so forth.  (I don't know if they still do)  Why not have fuel
in reserve?
Why:  it takes time and resources to extract crude, refine it and
transport it to where it is needed.  Right now, if one refinery shuts
down for maintenance, we get a price spike in fuels.  What would happen
if someone took out 2 refineries?

The Department of Energy this morning postponed its upcoming sale of crude

in oil prices that has roiled world markets.

The move halts the sale of some 12 million barrels of crude from three of
the reserve's locations along the Gulf Coast. That sale was mandated by
Congress as part of the Bipartisan Budget Agreement Act of 2015.

"In light of the recent fluctuations in global oil markets, the U.S.
Department of Energy is suspending the recently announced sale of crude oil
from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR)," spokeswoman Jess Szymanski
said in the announcement.

Oil markets saw their biggest drop in 29 years yesterday as fears of the
new coronavirus combined with a price war between Russia and Saudi Arabia
to create market uncertainty (*Greenwire
*, March 9).

Prices dropped to as low as $31 per barrel but have seen a slight increase
to $33 today. President Trump spoke with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin
Salman this morning about the situation, the White House said.

"The sale was designed to raise revenue for SPR facility maintenance and
upgrades," Szymanski added. "Given current oil markets, this is not the
optimal time for the sale."

She added, "The Department continually monitors and evaluates global oil
markets and will provide updated information as market conditions change."

DOE first announced the sale in a news release at the end of last month.
Bids were due at 2 p.m. EDT today.

Lawmakers on Capitol Hill questioned the timing yesterday, fearing it would
add to the problem by putting more supply into an already saturated
market (*E
Daily *, March 10).

Established in the wake of the 1970s Middle East oil embargo, the SPR
contains 635 million barrels of crude oil.

Nearly half that supply, however, is scheduled for sale in the coming
decade because of congressional mandates.

Lawmakers have used the reserve to offset the cost of legislation like the
2015 highway bill or a health care research effort.

You didn't have a bunch of "muffler sealer" over the crack that had to be
ground off before they could weld it . . .

Re: [MBZ] SL500 Sounding Bad*ss

2017-09-21 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
A number of years ago now, I had an 86 Chevy Suburban. The exhaust pipe
would crack on the Y pipe where the 2 parts joined  and I would drop
into the local Minute Muffler shop. They would put it on the hoist and
weld it in place and charge me $8.
It would last a year or two and then I would get them to do it again. A
bargain then and now.

Looks like a Filtercharger sticker on a factory airbox.
You treat it the same as any other car, note ease of starting, smoothness of
idle and startup smoke in your prepurchase inspection, and change the fluids
and filters when you get home.
(which is better than removing a behind the radiator snorkel and cone, then
trying to source a proper airbox and associated plumbing)

How do you measure toe-in that way? In other words, how do
 you calibrate the laser pointer?

Trigonometry. And the fact that the 123 manual has the
toe-in spec in degrees. *smiles* But with a known tire
diameter and a toe-in length the angle can be calculated.

Regarding calibrating the level, I used a 10ft piece of
Unistrut that my eyeball determined was straight. I measured
the height of the beam at the level and at 10 ft and figured
that was close enough.

I wrote up a page on my process in a file called

Someday when I've got some time to play (maybe today,
depending on weather) I will try making a perfect box with
string around the perimeter of the car, then measure /
adjust the toe-in. Another way would be to make two
parallel lines with string, then drive the car between and
measure/adjust. Would be so nice to have a pit or a lift
 for this work.

On my 123s and my domestics I use a laser level against the
front rim pointing to a cardboard target attached to the back
rim. It has worked well for my cars for years now.

Yabut how do you know the laser beam is parallel to the rim of the front wheel?
If the laser is not parallel, all that work means nothing.

Reminds me of a wheel alignment article I saw in a motorcycle magazine in the
1970s.
Tie a string around the front of the wheel, attach the other end to something
you can move around, like a jug of oil.
When the string is just barely touching the back edge of the tire, it's parallel
to the tire.
