If the hose/funnel combo went past the nipple into the hose, pushed off the nipple might still be in play. A rust hole in the tray seems odd given the ~10 year age of the car. Didn't you say that this _had_ been obstructed, and had been cleaned out by somebody? Over-aggressive cleaning, or perhaps a dirt-clogged and water-filled drain channel went through a freeze cycle? Your car's a bit young to exhibit aging rubber syndrome there. looking for service manual instructions or schematic list on taking off the sunroof to access that area... Based on my recollection of the service manual instructions for earlier cars, you are _not_ going to enjoy this. Re: [MBZ] Update 2004 E320 4matic - Water on Front Passenger's Side after Heavy Rain
Hi guys, As Curt suggested I found a small rubber hose that I was able to snake into the sunroof drain and attached a small funnel. It was a perfect fit so no water would backup into the drain channel . I did the test using 1 gallon of water. The water ran through the drain WITHOUT ANY WATER entering the interior of the car. I did the test again now I timed it to compare to the driver's side flow where there is no water issue. It took 3 minutes 24 seconds for the gallon to pass through the passenger's side drain as compared to 3 minutes 30 seconds for the driver's side (Yes I used a stop watch, a bit much I know!). The problem passenger side ran 6 seconds faster!! This just about rules out any issue with the drain itself..unless I am missing something. Apparently there is some issue in the drain channel. Somehow the water is leaking from the channel into the headliner and down the A pillar etc. before it is able to drain properly. A friend described the issue to a Mercedes technician who was sure it was from a clogged drain. Anyone have parts diagram or instructions on removing the sunroof. Please keep the suggestions coming. If that be the case, haven't you found the leaking drain on the passenger side? What am I missing? OH! Re: [MBZ] Update 2004 E320 4matic - Water on Front Passenger's Side after Heavy Rain
The problem passenger side ran 6 seconds faster!! This just about rules out any issue with the drain itself... How do you figure? You're saying that a drain that is known to leak some water where it doesn't belong runs faster than one that is running properly. Yeah, no surprise there. I will say it again. The drain hose is either split, probably where it hooks onto the drain channel nipple, or it's pushed off a little bit. Or there is a rusty spot in the tray. Some of the water is not going where it's supposed to. Re: [MBZ] UPDATE: 2004 E320 4matic - Water on Front Passenger's Side after Heavy Rain-ADDED Sunroof Issue
Now that the leak is definitely from the sunroof, I'm still not 100% convinced, but you might be right. There's enough torque in the body that a windshield might leak or not depending on how it's parked, could there be anything to that? How sure are you that your drapage did not cover any part of the windshield, or affect runoff over it? Is there any chance that while cleaning the drains you either poked through one of the rubber hoses, or pushed it off? My experience with the sunroofs is that it's basically a drip tray under the hatch, with a drain hose on a fitting in each corner. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] UPDATE: 2004 E320 4matic - Water on Front Passenger's Side after Heavy Rain-ADDED Sunroof Issue
Jim, I neglected to mention two facts, one I parked the car in the exact same location in my driveway which is facing in on a fairly steep downward incline. Secondly, the leak was definitely less after my friend cleaned out the drains. He said he had the sunroof off to check the drains thoroughly. He found debris in the right front drain which is on the same side as the leak. The sunroof sits slightly lower than the roof line on all sides, I am not sure if that is a result of the reinstall or it was originally like that when I purchased the car 4 months ago. Also I was very careful to seal the sunroof with tape and plastic not getting near the windshield. Just finished getting the remnants of adhesive off the roof. Appreciate your input. the leak was definitely less after my friend cleaned out the drains. My vote then is for a problem with the drain hose right where it joins the sunroof. Either pushed off, or split. Re: [MBZ] UPDATE: 2004 E320 4matic - Water on Front Passenger's Side after Heavy Rain-ADDED Sunroof Issue
Jim, You are right! The leak is somewhere from the right front drain hole in the sunroof to where the windshield pillar meets the top of the console. I poured a pint of water into the drain hole, almost immediately it drained from the bottom of the wheel wheel. But in addition it started dripping from the side of he console. There is no pooling of water in the sunroof area. I opened up the side of the dash console via a plastic cover that is hidden when the passenger's door is closed. I am probably not making myself clear so I attached a picture which shows where it is dripping. The dripping continues for about 15 seconds and stops. Now that I know generally where the leak is coming from any instructions (with pictures) on how to access the area and what to repair.
