Dave, you are making a big mistake. Be patient and you can find a good used
compensator on ebay for a couple hundred bucks. I swapped out a spring kit
for a compensator on my lovely 111 3.5 coupe and the ride improved
enormously, eliminating the harshness.

Who was it that was looking for a dead compensator to play with?
When working, the compensator would seem to be more elegant
than SLS. No pump, reservoir, separate control valve...
I can imagine taking a compensator to a hydraulic cylinder
rebuilder and asking them to reseal it.
