It never occurred to me that the hose fittings are simply barbed fittings with
metal ferrules crimped on them. As a result of this, all that needed to be
done to re-orient my hose was to put the fitting in a vice, place a large pipe
wrench on the ferrule, and twist.

< head slap >

So after that it was a quick trip over to the dealer to pick up some plastic
rivets for the auxiliary fan shroud to replace the ones that I cut off or
punched out when I removed it.

Got back to the ranch and installed the compressor, the rebuilt manifold and
the receiver/dryer. With everything buttoned up I pulled a quick vacuum on
the system, closed it up, and started my timer.

15 minutes - still at 30” Hg

30 minutes - 30” Hg

60 minutes - 30” Hg

With these results I was pretty sure the system was intact, so I pulled a
vacuum on it for about an hour and a half to be sure any moisture was boiled
out of it. I charged it to about 60% and fired it up. It made cold. Not ice
cubes, and I didn't expect them with this low of a charge, but definitely
making cold air. I’m going to button everything in the cabin up after
replacing the foam drain tube and be done for the day. I figure I’ll sneak up
on the charge over the next couple of days to get the best efficiency out of
the system.

While I was under the car I noticed the inside of the front tires are wearing,
so I’ll take the car over to my tire place tomorrow and have them check out the
alignment.

The 617 has a small tensioner nut that takes a 10mm socket to
release or increase the tension on the belt. It moves the
compressor toward or away from the engine after you have loosened
the holding bolts. You can see it in the manual pdf 83-522 on
page 18 as nut 3 on clamping screw 4. Check the part number on
the belt and compare with the one sold by on line vendors to make
sure you have the right one.

Can't see if that has 2 rows but if it says 4 pass I guess it does since
each loop goes back and forth X2. It looks like the retrofit on my car
was done right, there is a sticker there and everything, so maybe I can
get by with just the compressor and flush, etc. though it was starting
to leak down. Rings? It BLEW ICE COLD before it gakked.

If your condenser fittings are at the upper right corner looking at the car

some of the hot rod AC retrofit places, but you would have to fabricate your

Because there is no “proper charge” in a conversion. The best way is to work
off pressures and temperatures.

If you look around you’ll see percentages of R12 to R134a running from 70%-95%
suggested for converted systems.

Re: [MBZ] W126 AC Rebuild

2017-07-04 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes

GOOD info!

Dan Penoff via Mercedes
July 4, 2017 at 9:02 AM
Some observations after a drive this morning:

74F ambient, 55F-60F vent temperatures. Note that I only filled the
system to about 60-70% initially. I’ll continue to sneak up on the
refrigerant fill as I continue to drive and the ambients get higher -
it will be in the 90s today, for sure.

While it’s difficult to nail it down to any particular component, I
have to believe the parallel flow contributes significantly to the
efficiency of the system. I say that because with the original
condenser the cooling capacity would drop off noticeably at idle or
when the vehicle was stopped. During my drive today I noticed no
difference in vent temperatures at idle to when stopped.

I’ll continue to observe and report as I drive the car more. Tomorrow
is a work day and means that I’ll be doing my normal commute at both
surface street and highway speeds. All I all I’m very pleased with the
way things are working at this point. As I see how well the system
cools at higher ambients I’ll continue to add refrigerant in small
amounts.

Do you think the new condenser is better suited to 134 than 12?

Waytago!

Yeoman's work, as usual.

Dan Penoff via Mercedes
July 3, 2017 at 4:07 PM
Picked up where I left off on Saturday. Went to the hose place and got
humiliated….

It never occurred to me that the hose fittings are simply barbed
fittings with metal ferrules crimped on them. As a result of this, all
that needed to be done to re-orient my hose was to put the fitting in
a vice, place a large pipe wrench on the ferrule, and twist.

< head slap >

So after that it was a quick trip over to the dealer to pick up some
plastic rivets for the auxiliary fan shroud to replace the ones that I
cut off or punched out when I removed it.

Got back to the ranch and installed the compressor, the rebuilt
manifold and the receiver/dryer. With everything buttoned up I pulled
a quick vacuum on the system, closed it up, and started my timer.

15 minutes - still at 30” Hg

30 minutes - 30” Hg

60 minutes - 30” Hg

With these results I was pretty sure the system was intact, so I
pulled a vacuum on it for about an hour and a half to be sure any
moisture was boiled out of it. I charged it to about 60% and fired it
up. It made cold. Not ice cubes, and I didn't expect them with this
low of a charge, but definitely making cold air. I’m going to button
everything in the cabin up after replacing the foam drain tube and be
done for the day. I figure I’ll sneak up on the charge over the next
couple of days to get the best efficiency out of the system.

While I was under the car I noticed the inside of the front tires are
wearing, so I’ll take the car over to my tire place tomorrow and have
them check out the alignment.

Sort of. Rebuilding the major hose assembly was half the cost of new.
They could have rebuilt the others, but I don’t think it would have
been as cost effective. New compressor cost me about $225 including an
expansion valve and receiver/dryer.

But I’ve got a hard stop now…

Poop.

Looks like I'm done until Monday. I got the compressor out and
everything swapped over to the new compressor. I was sighting the
manifold that I had rebuilt by my local industrial hose place and
thought, "Gee, that fitting to the condenser doesn't look right."

That's because they assembled the new hose with the fitting to the
condenser off by 180 degrees. Dang it!

So I've got a hard stop until I can take it back to them and get it
fixed. They'll have to cut the crimp off, rotate the fitting, and
recrimp it. Not a big deal to do, but it really sucks as I was just
about to close up the system and start pulling a vacuum.

So the thread will be suspended until Monday, I guess. Good thing I
took the day off.

So hoses are as much as a new compressor, even using a local rebuild

Dan Penoff via Mercedes
July 1, 2017 at 3:42 PM
New from receiver/dryer to expansion valve, expansion valve to fitting
on false firewall. Total was about $170 new from Mercedes. Manifold
that connects to the compressor has two hoses on it, had the whole
thing rebuilt at Amazon Hose here in Tampa and it cost me $150. It
goes from fitting on false firewall to compressor, compressor to
condenser. New assembly from Mercedes would have been about $320 my
cost and the only one they had was in Germany, so it would have been a
week to get it. Amazon rebuilt my hose in a day.

Hose from condenser to receiver/dryer was included with condenser.

So all hoses have been replaced with new barrier style hose. All new O
rings, of course, too.

Next I'll be draining the cooling system so I can remove the radiator and
install the new parallel flow condenser. Pretty straightforward job and
doesn't involve getting down on my hands and knees much, thank goodness.

After that will be the compressor swap and the installation of the remaining
lines and receiver/dryer. If I’m living right I might have this thing back
together by the end of the day. It’s wicked hot and humid here today, so I’m
pacing myself to prevent getting overheated…

Re: [MBZ] W126 AC Rebuild

2017-06-30 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
So I’m maybe another hour into the job and I’ve already replaced the two hoses
to the expansion valve and got the new expansion valve with all new O rings all
the way around and the fittings snugged down finger tight.

While it hasn’t been a fun job, it wasn’t nearly as bad I thought it might be.

I’m going to head back out for the final push of the evening and get the
bulkhead seal on the hoses in place and the false firewall and related stuff
back together. That way in the morning I can start in on the condenser and
compressor before the day gets blazing hot.
