Yes, 116s are also excellent. Surprisingly good handling for a big car,
especially in euro spec.

I just pulled mine (300SD) out for the first time this year this morning.
Great car.

Like Curly said, if the ride height changes, it must be a 6.9.

My 116.120 (300SD) would gobble up RR tracks at 55mph with scarcely a
quiver, the kind of tracks that slow SUV drivers to 10-15mph. I probably
scared the crap out of some of them by passing them right before or after
the tracks at a 40mph speed differential.

my 123 240D rides much better after I put new Bilsteins on it, as
does any MB i've ever driven. they were critical on 110/111. I
could drive one of those and tell you if it had bilsteins or junk
shocks without looking at the shocks. Not sure I could do that any
more, but back in the day when 110/111 were on the road, I could. I
had 100% accuracy then.

I've driven a 116 and enjoyed it immensely. Much better than a 123
though maybe not as responsive as a 124/201.

I learned to drive in a W116 450SEL. When I needed a car I'd borrow it from my
parents during high school. I then drove it on and off during college and
pretty much adopted it thereafter. I must have clocked 100,000 miles on that
car. Definitely a smooth riding car but not mushy like the American land yachts
of the time.

Re: [MBZ] W210 Longevity

2015-04-24 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
Actually the lifetime journey started in like '02 or so when one of my
wife's patients, an Indy MB mechanic, was no longer able to drive so was
selling his 300TD. He was basically broke, and she had some measure of
pity on him, and the boychild needed a car for school commuting etc. so
we bought the TD. It was a good choice -- solid, hard to get into
trouble with a NA engine, and in fairly good shape. Paid too much for
it I think, but it was for a reasonable cause. The ex-wife widow called
me to see if I wanted a drum of engine oil he had in his little garage
at his apartment when he passed a year or so later, was not particularly
good oil (Shell something) and not diesel oil, so I passed on that. I
guess I could have recouped some of the car price with that but had no
way to haul it and a lifetime supply was a bit much.

Bought the boy the 84 SD when he graduated college, the daughter unit
was by then driving the TD. Mama told me after the fact that she liked
the SD and why did I get it for him and not her, sigh... So for her
birthday a few years back got her an SD like the boy's. Now the daughter
is driving mama's SD, the boy's SD and the TD are here and I need to do
something with them. Mama needed a new reliable ride so got the ML.
The TD is kinda past it's useful life due to rust but it still runs
well, I am thinking to pull some parts and haul it to the knacker.

But yeah, I remember my buddy's dad's MB from way back then and how
exotic it was, the ride and performance. I'll see my friend in a coupla
weeks, will have to talk about that car!

I have heard (never owned one) that the 116 is incredible, ride wise. I have

there. The suspension supposedly drops too, when you get over 80-85mph.

My 4matic has 260k on it.
First owner leased it in NH.
2nd owner got it off lease, ran the odo up to 234k, traded up to a 211 when the
trans started acting up. Interior was absolutely mint when I got it, but right
side of body had lots of scratches on it.
I've put a bit over 25k on it in 3 years. Interior far from mint now, I used it
like a truck to haul construction stuff in.

No reason it can't go another 100k unless it gets too rusty.

unreasonable... its easier to reach than the 1980s diesels, actually.

The rust, on the other hand. And that W210 ride... yuck.
