Re: [MBZ] Windows 10 Upgrade from 7

2020-01-08 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Kaleb,
Have you run a search for logs? There is a log folder under Windows. It
normally only holds "update" logs, but check anyway. Also, did you go to your
PC maker and get the latest BIOS? I still think it's something simple which is
being masked by the final error message. Did you get my files?

Re: [MBZ] Windows 10 Upgrade from 7

2020-01-08 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
On mine I disabled that pci card in device manager that said it needed a
driver. I’m doing the install again right now and it appears to actually
install windows 10, because it boots into it then downloads updates. It’s
currently at 13% on updates. Will see if it works this time or not. I am not
sure how far into updates it got before but I’m pretty sure it has at least
made at least this far.

Well just restarted and now it’s undoing changes so failed again.

Probably but it is annoying that their upgrade program does not appear
to work. I am not asking it to do anything odd.
The laptop is an Acer with an i5 chip and 6 G of RAM and lots of hard

It is a few years old but hardly an antique.

Re: [MBZ] Windows 10 upgrade failed again

2020-01-07 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Kaleb,
I sent you some file attachments, but neither my email or the files seem to
have made it through to you. If you get them, try the Upgrade Assistant
(original). It was good at finding and showing actual reasons that your PC is
not ready for an upgrade. It was the reason I found out that one of my Vostros
needed a BIOS upgrade first.
And for the other naysayers, I've always upgraded because it keeps all my
settings and I don't have to waste time creating them again. Also, I first
used Macs in the early 90s. They had HD controller problems and other issues.
Yes they had good graphics, but... We all like what we use. I just don't use
odd or non mainstream APPs. Not worth the OS problems they can cause.
Again, good luck,
Roger

Are your "browser, email client, pdf viewer, pdf creating, image/photo
editing, vector graphic editing, CAD, spreadsheet, word processing, music
player, video player" all on Linux, or are some of the virtual machines
for that?

If those are on Linux, which programs do you use for them?

Some things I had not heard of before:

In computing, SSHFS (SSH Filesystem) is a filesystem client to mount
and interact with directories and files located on a remote server or
workstation over a normal ssh connection. The client interacts with
the remote file system via the SSH File Transfer Protocol (SFTP), a
network protocol providing file access, file transfer, and file
management functionality over any reliable data stream that was
designed as an extension of the Secure Shell protocol (SSH) version
 2.0.

EncFS provides an encrypted filesystem in user-space. It runs without
any special permissions and uses the FUSE library and Linux kernel
module to provide the filesystem interface. It is a pass-through
filesystem, not an encrypted block device, which means it is created
on top of an existing filesystem.

Unison is a file-synchronization tool for OSX, Unix, and Windows. It
allows two replicas of a collection of files and directories to be
stored on different hosts (or different disks on the same host),
modified separately, and then brought up to date by propagating the
changes in each replica to the other.

Makes me want to jump right into Win10 from Win7! NOT!

Re: [MBZ] Windows 10 upgrade failed again

2020-01-07 Thread Brian Toscano via Mercedes
Macs are not what they used to be.

Years ago they were light years ahead of Microsoft but over time the two
have converged. Microsoft has gone up and Apple has gone down. I remember
back in 2007 or so using a neighbors printer with my Mac and he said I'd
probably have to install some device drivers, etc. I said I'll probably
just connect the USB cable and hit print and it will print. The printed
pages came out and he was so impressed he bought Macs for his family. This
is why people used to say "Macs just work."

But it's just not the same anymore. I'm sending this email from a
Microsoft Surface Pro 7 running Windows 10... The SSD in my Mac failed
last Monday morning. I tried to recover from Time Machine to an external
drive and it restored but would not boot. Then I tried to upgrade the OS
on the recovery drive I was restoring to so it would be the same version as
the Time Machine, but it would not install because it did not see a factory
SSD. I read of others having similar problems installing or upgrading Mac
OS when the factory SSD drive is not seen.

Windows is not perfect, but its trending better and macOS is trending
down...

I would try a fresh install on an empty hard drive rather than try to
upgrade from Windows 7. Too often the spec sheet says it will work, but
it's just not a great idea even if it manages to work somehow.

I banish those specialty applications to a virtual machine. And I
have a bunch. [sigh] The host is GNU/Linux. From the host
(Linux) I have good software for browser, email client, pdf
viewer, pdf creating, image/photo editing, vector graphic editing,
CAD, spreadsheet, word processing, music player, video player,
etc. And then some programs that I rather depend on - some which
might be Linux only, like sshfs, encfs, unison, ssh, SoX, ffmpeg,
BASH, etc.

The virtual machine is for hardware specific software like audio
DSP control, audio mixer remote control, wireless microphone
management, and so on. Wine doesn't work for most of 'em.

Audio editing in Linux is fair. Audacity is good at what it does,
but is not a real DAW. Ardour is kinda tricky and picky but is
quite capable.

Video editing in Linux is not so great. Cinelerra is the best
I've found so far - clumsy, picky, and hard to use. Avid and
FinalCutPro from 20 years ago was better. I haven't use either in
more than a decade so I don't know how those two are now - but I
do miss FinalCutPro version 2 when I want to edit video.

Almost any Linux will be no more trouble than Apple or
Microsoft. Just different - and much more "within your control".

I think that is a description of Win10!! The control prefs are
such a pain. New names for the same control. Access path seems
to be different every time I use it., control some stuff from
here, some from there, some from dialogs from Win7, some from
WinXP - maybe even some from Win95!

Do you mean "reinstall TO fresh media"?

A new SSD is cheap compared to buying a whole new PC. Maybe his system can
accept two hard drives, so he can keep his existing drive as the data disc.

Kaleb needs to back up his data and reinstall Windows from fresh media. I NEVER

Just did it, worked perfectly. Nice, I've got win 10 using 64 but and

Are you trying a clean install, or upgrade with keeping your files / data etc.?

Try this, if you have a spare hard drive so you can keep the old and not
lose your data.

Download the clean installation from here:

Install a clean version, and when you connect to internet and it asks for
the key, use your Win7 key. Buddy told me that's how he did it, worked
fine.

I'm going to try this with my factory installed win 7 pro key.

There was an update last year (I don't recall when) which required you to
do it then or you would not get future updates.

I don't know why M$ makes it so hard to keep a computer updated. There
should be a limited number of software configurations for a properly
updated, running computer, but they seem to want to start from scratch
every time.

 Kaleb,
Did you check for an installation or error log or event log that might
give you the exact cause for the load failure? If you have Ultimate, you
will end up with Win10 Pro, not Ultimate. Are you certain that your Win7
ultimate product key is a valid key? I ordered a thumb drive from a guy
on eBay that will install Win10 or do fixes to existing installs of Win10
(I think it was around $11). If you can get Win10 installed, go to a junk
computer store or Goodwill and copy the product key off a box and use it.
MS will take the valid key and give you a new digital key. I have a
Dell460 that I got last summer, supposed to have Win10Pro but it was Win10
Enterprise without a valid product key. Since I can't get a valid key, I
may just do a Win10 Pro upgrade on it to make it valid.
You need to find out specifically what is blocking the upgrade. As I said
before, it could be the need for a BIOS upgrade as it will prevent the
 upgrade also.
 Good luck,

Kaleb,
Reboot your win 7 computer to safe mode. Then find the option that
lets you
boot it to a previous date when it ran on Win 7. [should be a list of
saved

times when it did backups...
The earlier boot backup will have the Win 7 key and run normally... from
that, recover the key.
Win 10 wants to take over, so when it installs it wipes out the registry,
thus your Win 7 key file to take over..
I hate everything Win 10 does. Personally, I intend to run Win 7 until its
wheels fall off..
Perhaps, by then.. "Win 12 or something will work"...

I have no idea. I have a 2 tb SSD which I just installed not long ago
and everything was running great. It was installing and I left it
along then came back later and it was restarting in windows 7. Just
said installation failed and rolled back the changes. Previous to this
I checked the properties and it said windows 7 was active and genuine.
Now it’s as if the product key is missing and wants me to activate. I
can’t seem to find disc I used which has the key on it. Right now it
keeps say I need to activate now.

When I did it on my laptop it also failed the first time and rolled
back to win 7 but did not have the missing key issue. I just ran it
again and it took on the 2nd time/

Re: [MBZ] windows 10 upgrade on PC

2020-01-04 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
What what I read looks like it could be something with an antivirus program.
Only thing that was running on this machine was the Microsoft security
essentials. During the install it says something about it not being compatible
so I disabled it. On 2nd attempt it said same thing. I just installed it and
will try it again and see what happens.

It looks like it installs 10 but then does updates which fail so it reverts
back.

2020-01-04 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Kaleb,
Did you check for an installation or error log or event log that might give you
the exact cause for the load failure? If you have Ultimate, you will end up
with Win10 Pro, not Ultimate. Are you certain that your Win7 ultimate product
key is a valid key? I ordered a thumb drive from a guy on eBay that will
install Win10 or do fixes to existing installs of Win10 (I think it was around
$11). If you can get Win10 installed, go to a junk computer store or Goodwill
and copy the product key off a box and use it. MS will take the valid key and
give you a new digital key. I have a Dell460 that I got last summer, supposed
to have Win10Pro but it was Win10 Enterprise without a valid product key.
Since I can't get a valid key, I may just do a Win10 Pro upgrade on it to make
it valid.
You need to find out specifically what is blocking the upgrade. As I said
before, it could be the need for a BIOS upgrade as it will prevent the upgrade
also.
Good luck,

2020-01-04 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
> I'd like to have 64 thinking that I can use the 8 GB of RAM installed.

The 'bitness' of an OS is not a single number. There's half a dozen ways to
measure this,
each with different implications. There have been any number of '32-bit' OS's
in the past
that are quite capable of using more than 4GB of RAM. It's just that no single
_process_
could directly use more than 4GB unless that process was using a 64-bit address
space.

There's a lot to be said for using 32-bit processes on a 64-bit-capable
machine/OS. They
tend to use memory more efficiently. I have a small write-up:

Kaleb,
Reboot your win 7 computer to safe mode. Then find the option that lets you
boot it to a previous date when it ran on Win 7. [should be a list of saved
times when it did backups...

Yea I have that and it shows no key activated

Microsoft - Windows 7 Ultimate (x64)	00426-065-4097422-86619 (Key: none
activated)

Now that I think about it the install I used was some sort of enterprise
version I got from my brother which can supposedly be installed on
multiple computers. I used this same install on my laptop that the
screen when out. I will hook it up to my monitor then run Belarc on it
and get the key off that computer. Wait nevermind that wont work
because I upgraded that laptop to 10 already. Crap. I am going to have
to hunt for the CD or else pay for a license.
