Yes, seller does provide a VIN so I was going to check the engine serial
number, but when I pasted it in at lastvin.com it did not decode so there's
probably a typo in it.

2020-09-02 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
OMG I love this car! It gets 29.3 mpg in mixed driving and has many
comforts and convenience features vs.my '83 300TD. You can't tell you're
driving a diesel, it is that quiet, and it has great acceleration in case
you need to get away quickly.

Try to get "keyless go" if you can and be sure there are no codes or
driving issues, and that all service records are available. From what I've
read 2014 model year is an improvement over 2013. I got a good deal and
saved thousands because of the high mileage (135k) but no regrets since it
was dealer serviced from day one.

I just noticed yesterday that the "check engine" icon was lit. This is a
generic, non-specific alert that the owner'smanual says I must get
professionally evaluated. The vehicle is behaving normally in every regard.

I hesitate to take the car into the dealership for what they might tell

My tech cleared the code to see if the CEL comes back. I noticed fuel

First thing this morning I tightened the fuel cap, which was slightly

My 2010 Dodge RAM actually has a special light just for a loose fuel cap. I
don't remember if the check engine light comes on also or not. Its nice to have
that extra indication of the exact problem without needing a scanner.
Amazon sells little bluetooth or wifi scan tools. One of those along with an
app like Torque can scan OBD-II codes cheap cheap. I think I paid $10 for mine,
its paid for itself a few times since it will also clear codes.

Loose gas cap can cause it, at least in gasoline cars. Not sure about a
diesel. Just realize that it may take some time for the light to go out
even if that's the problem. It take a certain amount of time with no
faults before the light goes out.

Re: [MBZ] Check engine light on 250 GLK Bluetec SUV

2020-09-01 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Yes the iCarsoft gives details on the problems if you drill down on each
code.  I don't know about your car but it will list all the various
nanny modules on the car, then you click on each one and it will
diagnose that module and show any issues, then you can click on each one
and it will tell you information about it, maybe some diagnostic
procedures as well depending on what it is.

These are indispensable tools for any cars later than like 1990,
anything that has electronic bits and an OBD port.  I bought a cheap
adapter for the ICarsoft to plug into the round 38 pin diagnostic port
on the newer cars but I have not used it yet so not sure if it works or
not.  It was like $15 on Amazon but there are cheaper ones on ebay that
might take a month to come from China.

In a diesel, all sorts of things might do it, including 'cat pee quality
poor'. When was the DEF tank last filled? It might be as easy as diluting
what's in there with fresh stuff. Or it might be something entirely
different, like an O2 or NOx sensor. (those NOx sensors can lead to
'reduced power or shutdown in 100 miles, 90 miles...' as the EPA would
rather see you die in Death Valley than drive out in a car with a diesel
emissions malfunction)

Loose gas cap can cause it, at least in gasoline cars. Not sure about a
diesel. Just realize that it may take some time for the light to go out
even if that's the problem. It take a certain amount of time with no
faults before the light goes out.

Advance Auto can pull the code and tell you what it means. This will be
an OBD-II code, which are standard across all cars. So you'll have a
pretty good idea of what the problem is, but there may be more detailed

It's going into "limp home" mode -- check the switchover valves for EGR, boost
control, and manifold flaps if it has them. A bad switchover will result in
all sorts of ills, cured by replacing it.

A read-out of the error codes should help.

Re: [MBZ] Check Engine Light Update

2011-01-25 Thread Dieselhead

Glad you figured out the codes and the reset.

I can explain the difference in your 124s. The current one has no
loose suspension parts and is correctly aligned. Few 124s are
anymore, unless the owner has spent a lot of time and money to
correct it or to keep it correct.

I have spent 3 years and quite a bit of time and money on my 124, and
it is pretty good, but not perfect. It is now a joy to drive, but it
is still not quite right. I suspect maybe some worn parts in the
front, but not the normal items, as they are new.

By the way, I cannot explain this, but this 124 drives VASTLY better
than any other Mercedes I have driven in the snow/ice. I don't know
if its just better tires or what. But, I used to have to put snow
tires on my 90 124 diesel and the 90 126. But, this car did great!

201s are the same way but worse... For my '84 I've done:
rear links
rear subframe mounts (4)
rear shocks
steering shock
drag link
idler arm bushings
wheel bearings (both front, one rear)

and its almost there. I've got the tie rods yet to do and it'll need another
alignment (regardless after its trip into the ditch) and new tires.

Isn't it the other way around? IIRC the official aiming instructions for
the 124 in the FSM tell you to aim the nozzles to hit about halfway or maybe
two-thirds of the way up the windshield as a compromise, since at high
speeds airflow will pull the stream upwards, and at low speeds gravity will
do the opposite.

Re: [MBZ] check engine light??

2010-05-20 Thread R A Bennell
Is there a spot to plug it in? Most of the code readers don't work on pre 96
vehicles. They were OBDI and the newer
version is OBDII. I think that some of the older OBDI units could be made to
flash the dash lights and one could
read the codes in that manner. Have never done it so am speaking from memory of
things read on the net etc.

Now OBDII is sort of interesting. Plug in the scan tool and it tells you what
to look for. Some of the fancier
units will give a data stream while the engine is running and being driven. My
inexpensive one will not do that.
Engine must be off if I recall and it just tells me what code was set and lets
me delete and reset if I wish so
that I can see if it happens again.

My son just replaced the O2 sensor on the Maxima on Sunday. It kept setting the
code and he would reset it but he
was concerned that he my cause harm to the cat if he left it doing that for
very long so I picked up the sensor for
him and it seems to have solved the problem.

Remember that the code is only a hint at what is wrong. I had codes on my
Supercrew a couple of years back and it
did tell me what was bad but not in a way that meant much to me. I changed out
several COPs before I learned that
there was a bare wire shorting the poor things to ground and frying them. After
a couple I started looking to see
what was up but in the interim had swapped one to the next cylinder and as such
ended up with 2 dead ones.

you have to have one to read the codes, there are 3 wires to it
that you

plug in depending on which system you want to check. Look on ebay,
there is the lest light on there usually, or you can probably make
one

pretty easy.

Dieselhead wrote:
I don't think the 95 E320 is much different than a 94 E320. You don't
need a reader. It is not ODBII. Take a picture of the right inner
fender area and send it to me. Maybe I can figure out the code dealie
from the picture. The cover is a 2 or 3mm thick piece of plastic from
what I could gather. The cover on ours was gone.

Sorry to get us back on topic, but I am still trying to figure out
how to check the codes on my 1995 E320. Is the group wisdom that I
need to get a code reader?

?ctually, the normal reason you get a check engine light is that
the computer cannot control the mixture. Time to check for vacuum
leaks, manifold cracks (if you have a plastic manifold), and leaks
between the air flow sensor and the throttle body.

My brother in law replaced all four O2 sensors on his used BMW and it
drove terribly, died all the time when you let the clutch out,
bucked, you name it. Finally found an experienced mechanic who
determined that the crack in the air duct between the air flow sensor
and the throttle body was causing erratic mixture control, lighting
up the CEL and setting O2 failure codes. New duct for $80 or so
fixed it permanently.

light came on. So, the next time we
stopped, I went ahead and disconnected the battery to clear the code and it
worked. The light did not come back on
during the rest of the trip. I drove about another 110 miles with no problems.
Then, this morning, on my way to
work, it came back on again. So, here are my questions:

IS there one particular fault that happens on this cars most of the time?
When I disconnected the battery, I
forgot, it would set the code on the radio. So, how do I get the unlock code?

Any ideas would be great. Thanks,

What codes were on it? You read the light
flashes, then clear the codes under the hood. I
don't remember the codes, but you can find them
on the internet. Seems to me that 4, 5 and 9 are
common and often appear and disappear without
reason.

It has to do with the air pump (4 or 5) and then
the other codes pop because there is an error in
the signal from the air pump, although the air
pump is working ok.

If you are really nice to Rusty and send him the
VIN, he can send you the radio code.

Easiest way to fix it is to find the light and pull it. ;)

I personally like the older mitsu mightymax's, the CEL was tied to the
odometer, and had a switch behind an escussion plate to flip it off for
another X thousand miles

What do your fuses look like? How about your grounds and biodegrading

Re: [MBZ] Check Engine Light

2010-05-18 Thread Peter Frederick
åctually, the normal reason you get a check engine light is that
the computer cannot control the mixture.

The early system as used in my '82 380 SL is really stupid.
An odometer roller flips a hall-effect switch that causes it
to blow a microfuse inside the speedometer, which causes the
light to go on, permanently! You have to partially disassemble
the speedometer, realign the roller, and replace the fuse in
order to turn off the light. Naturally, even the official
repair now is to simply remove the light bulb!

Donald, This is a listing of the codes for an S500, but they appear
to be the same as I remember for E320. I don't have an E320 anymore,
so I can't take pictures of the unit. There is an LED and a
pushbutton to read the flashes. I think it is supposed to have a
cover, but mine didn't have a cover.

You push a button and it flashes a light. You count the flashes to
get the codes. (4 flashes = code 4)

I didn't know about this. What button? How do I check the codes.

Snook's E320 has a button and an LED under the hood. You push the
button and the led flashes to give you the code. Then I think you
hold the button down for a long time to clear the code. It is on the
passenger side, near the right side strut mounting, just in front of
the firewall.

The code give some clues about what is wrong, but it is an art to
figure out what is REALLY the root cause.
