Re: [MBZ] OT: Bilateral Knee Replacement

2013-10-27 Thread Dwight Giles
Thanks Greg this is helpful. I am going to print it out and take it with me
on thursday when I go see orthopedic surgeon for 2nd opinion on my
knees. Not sure I have courage to get both done at once. In any case I will
get right one done soon-probably at end of the semester.

On Oct 27, 2013 12:54 AM, Greg Fiorentino gf...@dslnorthwest.net wrote:

Okay, so I started having some problems with my knees about 7 years ago,
 and
it became serious enough that I saw an orthopedic surgeon at my local
medical group (The Vancouver Clinic). I got Casey Cornelius, an earnest
 and
intelligent young man. He did x-rays and MRIs, and pronounced my knee
joints and menisci a mess. He said that the only surgical solution would
 be
total replacement, but that he could not recommend that for me as I was too
young. He said that my anticipated lifespan considering my health status
was much longer than the working life of replacement joints at that time.
He recommended periodic injections of replacement synovial fluid
 (Euflexxa),
which I had been doing every 6 months since then with moderate improvement.

Fast forward to a few months back. I read on the medical news that the FDA
had just approved a device (Trade name Oxinium) for a 30 year lifespan. I
made an appointment with Dr. Cornelius. I asked him about the news item
 and
he confirmed it. He said that yes, the FDA had just certified it and that
it was the only product he used. He said he'd done about 1,000 of them in
the past 3 years. He said that now I was the ideal candidate for this
 surgery.

I did some more research on the Oxinium thing. It turns out this is a
 trade
name for zirconium metal parts that have been surface-treated to form a
ceramic-like coating. I think this is a controlled oxidation process
similar to anodizing in aluminum. The result is a ductile zirconium
substrate with an extremely hard and wear-resistant surface coating. It is
also extremely non-reactive, so not likely to cause any adverse effects in
contact with body tissues or fluids. The longevity of the device is more
due to the lack of abrasion on the highly cross-linked Ultra-High Molecular
Weight (UHMW) polyethylene that forms the cushion between the metal parts
than the wear on the metal itself.

I decided to do both knees at the same time for several reasons. I knew
that the recovery would be more difficult and painful, but I also thought
 it
would be worse to do one after the other and prolong the inevitable. I
 also
had managed to max out my out-of-pocket medical costs for the year already,
so if I could get it all done before 2014 it would lower my costs
considerably. Besides, the future of our medical insurance is not exactly
 predictable at this point.

The process involves more x-rays and MRIs. The images are sent to a
manufacturing facility somewhere in the SE US. They make (through some
 sort
of CAD-CAM process) the prostheses as well as the jigs and guides used by
the surgeon to trim off the ends of the bones. I understand that a
 surgical
tool similar to a multi-function DIY shop tool is used in the OR. Dr.
Cornelius told me that sometimes on-the-spot adjustments have to be made in
the OR to the pre-set surgical plan, but that in my case all the
measurements were right on the money and it all went slick.

So far the recovery has been yes, difficult and yes, painful. But the
physical therapy I'm getting and all other recovery metrics are showing a
faster than expected improvement. I consider myself very lucky indeed to
 be
able to avail myself of this incredible technology and a highly skilled and
experienced surgeon. I was in the hospital for a week at the Legacy Salmon
Creek hospital (right across the street from The Vancouver Clinic. They
have a knee replacement unit that handles a lot of these surgeries with
 many
 different products.

 Hi All:

I've just been through an experience that may be of interest to some of you
who are probably in the same age group as I am (68 y.o.). On 10/8 I
underwent surgery to replace both knee joints and am experiencing an
excellent recovery so far. The events that have led me to this point have
been full of happy coincidences, including having stumbled upon the latest
and greatest in technology and metallurgy in knee replacement materials.

I will be happy to provide gory details to the list if anyone is
 interested.

I still have an old Mac II fx, which I got simply because it was cheap
(surplus from my neighbor's work) and cost $10,000 new. Works fine so
far as I know, we used it to do the newsletter for the homebrew club
for years until the monitor blew. Pretty spiff for 1990: 40 MHz
Motorola 68000 something chip, 24 MB Ram (in the days when a PC could
only use a couple MB without drastic expense or gyrations), super VGA
monitor.

Probably still works, but I don't have room to run it just for fun, it
sits on the shelf in the basement next to my HyType II printer that
quit in 1990.

I have a G4 Quicksilver sitting in the back bedroom acting as a backup machine.
That's about as old as mine get.

My current machine (which just recently replaced a C2D 20 iMac) is a Mac Pro

machine, but I'm just not motivated to do it at this point as I don't do
anything that requires that sort of horsepower.

I will say that adding SSD boot drives to my machines has made them quite fast.

If anyone wants my G4 I would part with it cheap. It's just taking up space.
Got a 15 Cinema Display, the round speakers, a RAID card with a couple of
drives and I don't know how much memory.

Re: [MBZ] [Banned] the irony of it (watch related)

2013-10-27 Thread Peter Frederick
Finding a working movement that age is difficult, as no one has been
having those watches serviced for quite some time. They most often
appear from estate sales, where the watch has been sitting in a drawer
unused for 20 or 30 years. They almost never run properly as
acquired, and not having them cleaned and serviced results in
excessive wear from dust and dirt on the pivots and subsequent need
for searches for parts.

That said, there is no problem with swapping in a working movement,
they aren't serialized. Same as swapping smaller parts as far as I'm
concerned, it's not a collector's item, it's a personal wristwatch.

Of course, one must remember that the main reason the watches end up
in the drawer unused is that there is something wrong with them

No, it'd be like buying a rusty 300TD and swapping the motor into your 300TD
with the blown engine. The difference is the 300TD's engine has a serial number
on it and watch movements usually don't, so nobody will know you swapped
movements if you don't tell them.

However, unless there's really something wrong with yours, servicing yours
probably isn't much more labor than servicing a running movement and swapping
your hands and dial onto it.

old watchmakers have thousands of movements and parts plus tons of it shows
up on ebay. yes, it will likely require service. it's what i would do to
solve this problem. first i'd find someone who can fix anything to
declared it unfixable. then i'd replace the movement with another of the
same type.

On Sun, Oct 27, 2013 at 11:29 AM, Peter Frederick psf...@earthlink.netwrote:

Finding a working movement that age is difficult, as no one has been
having those watches serviced for quite some time. They most often appear
from estate sales, where the watch has been sitting in a drawer unused for
20 or 30 years. They almost never run properly as acquired, and not having
them cleaned and serviced results in excessive wear from dust and dirt on
the pivots and subsequent need for searches for parts.

That said, there is no problem with swapping in a working movement, they
aren't serialized. Same as swapping smaller parts as far as I'm concerned,
 it's not a collector's item, it's a personal wristwatch.

Of course, one must remember that the main reason the watches end up in
the drawer unused is that there is something wrong with them

Pismo's were great -- with two batteries, I got upwards of 8 hours of
run time, specially after new cells in the batteries. However, it was
slow as molasses with Word, which I'm stuck with, and much heavier
than the TiBook.

My TiBook is back to full function now -- I lost a screw out of the
top frame in the bottom, and the other one was loose under the
keyboard, and I found the screws holding the batter connector in place
were also loose (being a watchmaker, I tend to under rather than over
tighten things!). Got all that fixed and suddenly the re-celled
battery is working properly, it doesn't lose it's time settings every
start, and it's usable again. Don't do all that much with it, as it
won't support new enough software for full browsing use (I think it's
still running 10.4.6), but for image editing of family photos, keeping
track of beer and wine batches, and email it's great.

I could skin however decided to glue the whole darned thing together
though, it's all failing and it's a huge pain to re-glue everything.

Don't remember any video chips cracking off the boards or stupid stuff
like that in those days either (self-igniting Powerbooks aside, as
that wasn't a Apple issue, it was a Sony battery issue that persisted
for some years). Now they are high priced self-destructing throw-
aways -- my family history is 20% dead in a week with new MacBooks
over a few years, which is totally unacceptable.

Main problem is excess heat localized to the video and processor chips
-- they run HOT unless actively cooled (by the time smcfancontrol
initializes on my newly fixed MacBook A1211, the chip is up to 80C)
and the thermal stress cracks the solder even when they are re-
balled. Bad design with totally inadequate cooling due to the silly
demand that they be so thin. Adding 1/4 to the height would fix it
right up and allow a return to a design with fewer screws, etc.

Oh well, we shall see. Not going to be significant changes in
performance any more, so they are all pretty much commodity objects
now -- you can still buy a MacBook with the same performance specs
(other than more cores, which becomes valueless beyond 4 anyway) as
mine.

Don't know if desktops are a habit or a requirement, but for most
people it doesn't make any difference. In fact, for a lot of people,
a smart phone is all they really use.

Me, I have a couple SCSI scanners attached, two printers (and soon
three when I get the BW R1800 fixed), so a desktop is pretty much a
requirement. Better memory, better processing power, etc. than the
contemporary ones. Since I've moved to an LCD monitor, though, there
is very little difference between the laptop (MacBook Pro) and the
desktop other than the SCSI connector. Scanning is still quite slow,
but that's a function of the scanners, not the computer.

Big honking desktop machines are probably a niche market now though,
because the only people who really use them are doing video editing or
heavy duty Photoshop or publishing. Ordinary users don't need
anywhere near the power or memory for web browsing or email, family
pictures, etc. Although I do have to admit there seems to be a trend
toward more and more intensive data exchange (read crap on web pages)
these days.

The Android OS on the HP TouchPad did everything I needed and more, and it was
easily configurable and allowed me to tinker under the hood all I wanted. The

The only determining factor was connectivity, but to be honest, I don't really

Speaking of bad caps, I have a MacBook Pro that is totally inert now
except that the battery charges. Any chance of a blow fuse or bad cap
on the logic board keeping it from booting? Acts as if the logic

Is anyone using this? I have a 2yr old imac that is running 10.6.8 and

I just built a bootloader with Chameleon to boot into Mavericks with my Mac Pro
1,1 which actually shows as a 2,1 due to the use of a firmware update.

http://batmanofzurenarh.wordpress.com/2013/06/17/install-mac-os-x-10-9-mavericks-developer-preview-on-a-mac-pro-11/

netkas does some really nice bootloader stuff for 32 bit EFI if his site ever
stays up long enough to get the information.

I'm not impressed. I have a boot drive with Mountain Lion on it as well, but I
rarely use it as I just don't see any significant reason to run it.

I wouldn't bother, unless there's some super-duper feature it has that 10.6/7/8
doesn't.

I still have my 2007 17 MBP though it too is getting tired. I don't need

the RAM and hard drive. It has the dreaded 17 MBP battery problem and
after the 2nd one died I didn't replace it. The motherboard was replaced
out of warranty through a NVIDIA recall program.
