No, not the word, the element... I got some new tars on my truck at Costco a coupla weeks ago and noticed they are fitted with the green caps, they put nitrogen in them. A coupla weeks ago at the Cars for Coffee event down the road the beemer dealer had a coupla new cars there for some reason, and looking at the stickers I noticed Nitrogen Tire Fill $89 on there. Must be some special Hun nitrogen they use? $89 for nitrogen in tires, WTF? Costco was free. On another note, Costco had the Bridgestones $70 off a set but did not have any to fit my truck so I had to go with Michelins, which were more spendy. I commented to the guy that next week the Michelins would probably be $70 off. Shonuff, got the new coupon book the other day, and Michelins are $70 off a set. So I go to Costco, whine to the desk woman, and she gives me $70 in coin of the realm, just like that. She said that was easier than running a credit on my bank card. I'm sure it is no big deal for Costco, but I like that kind of response. Now y'all can tell me I got the crappy Costco Michelins, which are different from the Michelins I would get down the road at the real tar shop. But the real tire shop would use only 80% N, so Costco is 20% better in that regard. --R ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. Tire Warehouse up here does the nitrogen fill but with it you get tire damage protection and whatnot. When I bought tires for the Jetta I managed to get all 4 tires for $300 with the nitrogen/etc thrown in for free. They were super busy and I told the guy to answer the phone, I could wait. If you're extra nice people tend to be extra nice to you. That chin spoiler is supposed to improve your mileage by preventing air from going under the truck on the highway. You need to make one that can be lifted or lowered depending on where you are driving. Hydraulic or air cylinders? And the winch? Must be some way to make an anchor that you could drive into the ground so you could pull yourself free. I used to work with a fellow who was an avid hunter and fisherman. I would think the real problem with the highlift jack is finding places on the truck that are not going to be damaged by the jack. Re: [MBZ] OT: The secret revealed
The chin spoiler and big bumper are gonna go, they're too much liability for what is probably minor gain. This truck gets better mileage than my Ranger did already, now it needs to be as good offroad, the Ranger was an excellent woods truck. Winch doesn't help much when you're in the ditch. Pulling yourself forward won't help, pulling yourself farther into the ditch won't help. Lifting the truck UP and putting stuff under it will help. We've never had a winch and I've really never been stuck where a winch would have done me much good. On the other hand I've gotten trucks out a couple times with Highlift jacks. Its a matter of matching your equipment with your situation. Ever place is different. Maine is much like atlantic Canada but probably unlike the Canadian mid-west. I find it a mistake to generalize based on what is like in your area. What works for me might not work in California for instance. I almost never have to worry much about wildfire or being able to find water. On the other hand I often get caught where things are soupy. -Curt From: Randy Bennell rbenn...@bennell.ca To: Curt Raymond curtlud...@yahoo.com; Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Monday, September 8, 2014 10:57 AM Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT: The secret revealed That chin spoiler is supposed to improve your mileage by preventing air from going under the truck on the highway. The hooks can also hook around a bumper so you can jack there if theres nothing good to jack against under the wheel. They also sell a big foot to put under the jack. 3.55 gears instead of 4.10 has something to do with it. :) The Ranger also had a big airdam, it had the fog lights in it. The fog lights succumbed to the deer I hit last November. Interesting that Kroger is taking this up. When I lived in Indiana you saw OC people all of the time. I don't ever recall seeing one in a Kroger, but I clearly recall seeing them in places like WalMart. In fact, I was in a Walmart with my youngest son right after we moved there, and all of the sudden he's poking me and saying quietly, Dad, there's some guy with a pistol and he's not a cop!! Hard to say without having a good look at it, if as described 6k is not far off the mark, the 108/9s are going up in price lately, as they have the classic Merc look and are still very usable as a daily driver. It's a V8 with steel suspension, so no carbies or air suspension to spend up on. Air suspension is universally regarded as being superior to steel springs but can cost a bit to fix. So yeah if you are wanting a 108 without breaking the bank and being afraid to drive it, this would be it. I really don't think you would find a much cheaper V8 108 than this, unless it's a total junk pile. Hendrik who has a secret lust for V8 108/9s On 09/09/14 08:55, Kaleb C. Sure it is... if its really 99% rust free. I just sold this: http://images.jaimekop.com/2014_08_09_280SE/ for much more, and there was nearly a bidding war on the car. And I didn't even list it for sale yet. W108s are hot, and they're going to rise. Finally. But you're really missing the boat with the V8s. I've owned a few of both and always thought the V8 was too heavy and bloated, and had the sleepy 3 speed automatic. 6 cylinder cars are the best. I strongly prefer the early W108s (1966-67) as well due to their higher interior qualities without any of that safety nonsense added in 1968. I like the fluid coupling transmissions more too, but most people probably don't agree. Jaime On Mon, Sep 8, 2014 at 7:17 PM, Kaleb C. Yeah but you got to compare it to the 3.5 and 2.8, neither of which are super efficient. You also got to compare it to other cars of that era, none of which got good mileage, apart from some of the Diesel ones but even they are crap when compared to modern electronic Diesels. A 108/9 with a modern Diesel engine would be cool or even convert it to a hybrid. There is a fella on the OzBenz forum who is toying with the idea of converting a CLK to hybrid, the upshot is pretty much that it will never pay for itself. One probably does not own one for the mileage though. I drove the new W140 over 1,000 miles in under 24 hours and felt relaxed and refreshed. No sore back/butt, etc. Not many cars can do this nowadays. Combined with its excellent repair record during the first 8 or 10 years, it would be a good investment. That said, I wouldn't buy one for one principal reason: It rides rough and there seems to be little cushioning by the seat; you feel every bump. My old Beetles rode better. A Mercedes seat would help but that might be difficult or impossible to install. My reasons for buying a new or late model car are exceptional fuel economy and reliability on long trips; something the Prius would satisfy; but being pounded on rough roads for hours at a time would be unpleasant and tiring. Aaah now your talking like an S class owner. You'll have to get Reggie to drive you around but you should get an SEL for the extra legroom. The transmission itself is overall fine, I just don't care for the missing first gear. (That is, the 3 speed's ratio on first is similar to the 4 speed's in second). On the highway its grand, but around down its pretty sleepy. I've never driven a 3.5 with the 4 speed fluid coupling trans. I suspect I'd like it. Re: [MBZ] This worth anywhere near the listed price?
It was quite common to drop a 615 in these in Germany -- lowered the tax rate and gave decent performance with much better milage. It is better than a comparable Cadillac or Oldsmobile -- in that era they got six mpg, as low as 4 if you drove hard. Huge honking things that rolled like whales. I wish my was restorable, and I had the $$, they are a blast to drive, and if you set them a bit lean, aren't so horrible on milage you can drive them on trips.
