[MBZ] OT: Golf brakes

2016-08-16 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Again breaking in (see what I did there?) with car news.
Some of you might remember some months ago I replaced the rear brake pads and
calipers on the Golf I also free'd up the sticking caliper pins to make the
calipers actually work.
At the time I bled the brakes with my new power bleeder but the pedal travel
remained short and touchy. A lot of newer vehicles are like that and I hate it.
The repair instructions on myturbodiesel.com suggested using the VCDS (no idea
what it stands for, its the computer link to the car) to bleed the ABS
controller. I tried that but it didn't help.
Recently it occurred to me I was probably doing it wrong, so today while trying
to troubleshoot laggy turbo performance I ran through the ABS pump output tests
a couple times. Result: MUCH better pedal feel. So I'd managed to bleed the air
out of the calipers but air in the ABS pump itself was giving me squishy
brakes...

Curt,
How does the VCDS work? Is this the setup that links to the car using a
laptop, link cable and specific software? I read in some TDI forums that this
setup is needed to power the fuel pumps to properly prime the system when
changing the fuel filter on my 2014 Beetle TDI.

The Cessna ended up in the driveway after the owner, 69-year old Harold Guretzky
had to give up his pilot’s license for health reasons. Rather than paying
$150/month to store the plane, he removed the wings and had it flat-bedded to
his driveway. He replaced the wings — which, I should add, do not encroach on
anyone’s property other than his own — and it didn’t take too long for the
neighbors to start complaining, which led to ticketing and a summons from the
Town of Hempstead Buildings Department which could cost as much as $2500, with
fines every week the plane remains.

What baffles me is why did people give a shit? Multiple residents of his street
apparently called the police — why? If you drive by a house with a plane in the
driveway and your primary reaction is anything other than “hey, cool — there’s a
plane in that driveway,” then I think you, as a human, have some pretty severe
problems.

If you just buy the cables, MUX and software on an external USB drive you can
get it all for under $300. That’s what I paid about a year and a half ago on
Alibaba. Consider that the MB stuff is not just the cables and software, it
also includes the multiplexer that is necessary for the older cars that used
the HHT (hand held tester) and that with the multiple cables included you can
run diagnostics on anything MB from 1993 or so to 2010 or thereabouts, which
includes the CANBUS driven cars.

I paid $75 for a nice HP business class laptop with a serial port to run it.

Hi Kevin,
You've got it exactly. People complain that the $250 cable is expensive but the
software is free and I believe Dan spent way more money on the MB system.I'm
running the software in Virtualbox on my Mac since it requires Windows. Seems
to work just fine. I originally bought it for my '98 but it works on my '05
too. I don't remember when the CANBUS cars started but mine won't cover those,
it was an extra $100 for the cable that does both...
There are a bazillion little changes you can make, of course you can read the
OBD-II codes but you can get car specific codes, you can change the timing a
little bit, adjust the injection quantity a little, correct for slight speedo
discrepancy due to tire changes etc.
Today I've been using it to track turbo output vs MAF (mass air flow) to be
sure the MAF is working correctly. I think it is but for some reason the turbo
is being slow to spool. The software has the ability to graph over time:
http://i843.photobucket.com/albums/zz353/curtludwig/VCDS_05_Golf_2_zpseeafy7qi.pngThats
my car this afternoon. The lavender line is accelerator input, yellow is the

engine temp and barometric pressure turned off to un-clutter the graph a
little.I did some runs with EGR actuation too but it made for a graph that was
hard to read.
I *think* that the slow rise in turbo means its bad. I've seen some other
graphs where turbo pressure rises quickly with increasing engine speed and
stays high, on mine it significantly lags accelerator input. The car feels like
the turbo isn't spooling until 2200-2500 rpm, then it pulls like a freight
train.
Maybe I should do another graph with power output...

Re: [MBZ] OT: Golf brakes

2016-08-16 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I went out and played with the actuator a little just now. It starts moving at
about 5"hg and is fully in at 15 which seems to be normal.
I'm wondering if I've got an air leak somewhere. I pulled the air filter, it
was a little dirty but what you'd expect after a year. Its got an oil change
coming up so I'll do that then, I also blew out the airbox good, again a little
dirty but about what you'd expect. Theres a secondary air door that opens if
the primary air intake is clogged, it wouldn't open so I oiled its pivot and
got it working again.
I'll take the car to work tomorrow and see if its better. I was thinking it
might feel a little better when I did the runs for the screenshot I posted. I
wonder if with a little air in the ABS system maybe the brakes were dragging
slightly...

[MBZ] Tri-star Crack 'Ho

2016-08-16 Thread clay via Mercedes
I went to PnP to pick up a tail light for Mom, who backed into a Suburban.

As I was driving in to the entry lane, a pair of white MB sedans caught my eye.
Builders sales lot… cars too nice to get stripped. The 95 S420 was a great 20
footer. Fellow working the lot was alone on his first day and could not get
data on the car, or find keys. Called to the main office and found out they
picked it up for $100, make offer sale, I said $500, he countered with $600.
Hook was set, all that was needed to reel me in, would have been keys to be
able to give it a crank. NO ATF stick, and the oil stick brought up brown
emulsion. Interior was pretty nice, no tool kit in the trunk, odd pitting in
the paint at the rear door curve to the fender.

The two and a half hours I played with cars in the yard, that W140 was calling
my name. Must be what a crack head feels waiting to score another fix. I want
a white car so I can repaint it in Polizei colors. I seem to be looking for
some crafty thing to fill my spare time.

I got the tail light for Mom. Could not remember what it looked like so got
one older than her car, and one the year after. One should work. Found a pair
of ’95 grilles and some other fun bits, like the passenger side wipers for
W140. Dealer cost for each is $150. Number 1 son had to get new for his car,
so may as well have spares, or something to sell on. Found a nice W124 switch
panel in zebrano.

After planning where to store the W140, how to get it there, timing of the
events, how to get a key and registration, I went back to see if they would
take a payment to hold the car until I could get it. Found out the engine was
blown, that is why it was there. Sales guy thought it may be something like
sprung timing chain smacked the valves. From the oil, looks like it was
overheated and blew the head gasket. SO, that means sourcing a M119. Add that
to the list of things.

Drove home with my haul, without purchase of the car. Dropped the grilles at
my indy, who was able to persuade me to walk away. Just take a deep breath and
let it go. Guess I save my cash to hit the BC Stars Show and Shine end of
this month.

Re: [MBZ] OT leasing a car

2016-08-16 Thread clay via Mercedes
More cramped than a W124. While cooling my heels at stealer I took to seeing
how well my back side fit these things. GLA is made for dwarves. E class, as
most of the cars, provide good legroom for driver, but you have to be
pre-pubescent to fit well behind. GLE did have room enough to keep my knees
from bumping the seat ahead.

Remember the Dallas episode where JR had drugs planted on an opponent and then

I wouldn't have to plant drugs over there, I can smell them anytime the wind
blows from the west...
A year or so ago my great uncle Fred died. My cousin Phil is executor of the
will. Phil is a nice guy but not overly gifted in the thinking department. My
dad was executor of great uncle Reg's estate so he's helping Phil out. Phil's
sister Melanie is a real piece of work, 5 kids by 5 different fathers, a couple
of whom she even married. With her father dead she's now seeing dollar signs.
Melanie decides she'll threaten Phil and my dad and leave a message on the
machine that they're going to "get it" and the police will be all over them.
We're all baffled so dad calls the police. An officer comes over and takes a
recording, and tells dad that this happens all the time. Scum bags threaten
other scum bags with police action. Being scum bags they're naturally afraid of
the police. Of course my dad and Phil haven't done anything so they're
effectively unthreaten-able since they haven't done anything to arise police
ire. Melanie and her idiot husband got what must have been a hilarious visit
from the police for these threatening phone calls...

Melanie decides she'll threaten Phil and my dad and leave a message on the machine that

Curt,

Remember the Dallas episode where JR had drugs planted on an opponent and then arrested? Just a
thought. I'm having trouble understanding some of the member opinions on this. Yes, we are free to
do what we want, UNTIL it causes a problem for others. I have a neighbor who is a real a**hole and
since I live in the country, I'm told you can do whatever you want in the country. My old civics
teacher in high school many years ago summed up civic responsibility quite simply as, "my
right to swing my arm ends where your nose begins". I think it's called respect for the rights
and wishes of others as well as yourself. After all, we do all need to live in this society which
means we all can't just "do whatever we want". Just some additional thoughts on this
topic.
Best Wishes,

Re: [MBZ] Curt makes the news

2016-08-16 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Kollyphonya (Kollyfonia?) Sister Syndrome. In my younger days, I
called it California Sister Syndrome.

I have seem it so many times it should be in the APA handbook by now.

The first time I saw it in person was about 40 yrs ago. My ffriends
form Kolledge went back to farm with the family. Grandpa (about 80)
promised them the fram they lived on and farmed in his will. His dad
(grandpa's son) lived nearby on a farm he had "owned" and worked since
late 1945 when he came back from the USAAF. Only problem was that
Grandpa never bothered to record legal deeds to the farms, nor set up a
trust. We don't know if or when his will was updated, or if he had a will.

(can you smell it coming?)

So grandpa croaks at 84 or 5 or so. Is daught flies in from
Kollyphonia. either there was a will or not, I am not sure of the
details, but both my fiend and his dad, either found out the will was
not updated, or the sister hid the latest will or whatever. At any
rate, they made reasonable offers for "their" farms to buy out the
Kollyphonia sister's interest at fair market value. The Kollyphonia
ssister has a hissy fit, runs all over the small town telling everyone
they are trying to "steal" the farms from her. Being from LA, she
"knows" the farms are worth (X) times more than the price offered
indicates. (x = any number from 2 to 100, depending on how wacko the
sister is)

Rather than agreeing to an appraisal, the Kollyphonya Sister calls in
the big city shysters, who file lawsuits and fors everything to be
sold. The whole mess takes over 12 months, in which time both families
are evicted and take huge losses. The dad dies of a broken heart within
a year, his wife very close to the same time. My friend ended up havein
his wife take the kids and leave, with a divorce in the time it took to
wind through the court.

In the end, the fair market value IS the fair market value, the GREEDY
sister gets less than the original offers, and goes back to Kollyphonia
to sulk.

The sister with way overinflated ideas of farm value has been played out
in many many families I have known. Of all the kids I knew in HS who
went on to farm, maybe 25% or less had a family that was able to make a
generational transition. In most of the cases, the sister lived in
Kollyphonya. Im my case, I was not fortunate enough to have a "sister"
in Kollyphonya. That is 10 times further away then my case.

Greed is greed, and unfortunately, greed and jealousy are rampant ing
families.

Good luck with Melonhead. We can hope the visit from the po-lice made a
lasting impression. If so then threats of sending the popos to her may
keep her backed down.

The pressure bleed from on top was the only way I could get the 107 with
ABS to behave. I never had any such problem with 126 cars with ABS,
just gravity bleed from above. Keep the reservoir full enough so it
won't run out. Simple.

I made a pressure bleeder with a new $10 1 gallon sprayer from the HoDe,
a few fittings, 20' of 5/16 tubing and a new cap form flaps. Dump a QT
ot DOT5 fluid in and go. In this case, I found real Castrol GT brake
fluid, which is my mind the gold standard, although ATE stuff should
also be a gold standard. (probably pentosin too)

More cramped than a W124. While cooling my heels at stealer I took to
seeing how well my back side fit these things. GLA is made for
dwarves. E class, as most of the cars, provide good legroom for
driver, but you have to be pre-pubescent to fit well behind. GLE did
have room enough to keep my knees from bumping the seat ahead.

That is only one thing. The general deterioration of pretty much every
system indicates long term lack of service/maintenance. How many
decades since it had an oil change? Interior shot, exterior shot,
suspension gone, a/c not working, sunroof not right, windows not right,
most body panels rotted. Engine, trans, driveshaft and diff, all
questionable, and likely abused, given the overall abuse of the car.

In person inspection may yield some favorable exceptions, but generally
when a car is abused, everything is abused.

Re: [MBZ] OT: What's wrong with Mrs Clinton?

2016-08-16 Thread rogerhga--- via Mercedes
Well, after much research on the internet, the list archives, and other
credible sources, I have come to the conclusion that Hillary suffers from the
"devil biting her big fat rump". I watched her squirm in a chair yesterday
while Joe Biden spoke (although a Biden speech might equate to a devil rump
bite). I think more research should be done. I also think she should be
evaluated by a good Dr. like Kevorkian or some of his associates. I'm certain
Soros and the Clinton Foundation have enough funds to provide this checkup. I'm
still trying to keep an open mind regarding her condition (so many varying
reports in the media...not the mainstream media, but others who aren't afraid
to speak), but at present, the devil theory seems to hold the most promise.
Best Wishes,

I was thinking that too. If I could do a high mileage lease, then the residual
value would be relatively low and I might be able to purchase it for my wife to
drive. I think she likes the Altima, too.

The cool thing about the 100k/36mo lease is the residual value is diddly-squat
if you intend to buy it.
I almost assumed the last five months on a 60k/39mo lease on a totally loaded
2012 Cruze LTZ.
Not because I wanted to pay $230 a month to drive a Cruze, but because if I
were to buy a GM econobox, a stick shift 1.4L turbo Cruze LTZ-RS with leather
and everything would be the way to go, provided I could buy a 30kmi car for the
auction value of a 60kmi car.
Despite paying for 60k, he'd only put 32k on it, and the end of lease buyout
was only $10,600.

I drive Mama's ML occasionally, which the E class of the SUV line. At
6'4" I find the longitudinal legroom OK, and don't even run the seat all
the way back, but the width of the well between the door and the center
console is annoying as my right knee hits the console sorta at the top
of it where it is somewhat uncomfortable. I do not feel that way on the

You should go sit in one or drive one and see how you feel in it but if

[MBZ] OT Bowsaw Crosscut Bucksaw

2016-08-16 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Today I ended up watching a lumberjack/woodcutter contest. It was
pretty interesting. the axes and axemanship is way beyond my talents.
But watching one man crosscut, 2 man crosscut, bucksaw and even bowsaw,
I thought I should try the crosscut and bucksaw some year. The bowsaw
is so easy to get the blade going crooked, I never much liked a bowsaw,
except for light pruning.

I finally went up and asked how long beforetime you have to register.
They told me I could still sign up for the bowsaw, the last event, so I
did. Ha! I have not run a crosscut or bucksaw for 50 years, and have
not used a bowsaw for about the same time, other than for light
pruning. Once I hit 12 or 13, I started using the 35 lb chainsaw, and
never went back to the lighter tools. Ha! I took ninth place. The
last 7 of the 8 people before me all had trouble keeping the blade
straight, so I figgered the blade was bent/twisted and hard to control.
I offset the twist and didn't go too fast the first half, then tried to
pick up speed and then the blade went crooked. At that point, I knew I
was screwed. I kept trying to straighten the kerf, and managed to get
through the piece. I was surprised that the poor work still placed for
a ribbon. It was fun, so I think I should clean up the one man crosscut
I have and try to sharpen it and practice, then enter next year.

Anyone know what the pros use to treat the crosscut saw? Wax? oil?
I'd guess beeswax is the traditional treatment, but maybe the pros use
ski wax or some other stuff.

Re: [MBZ] OT Bowsaw Crosscut Bucksaw

2016-08-16 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
You need a saw set tool, which sets the tooth offset properly.. Then you
need to learn how to file the teeth properly so they are razor sharp..

Before you do any of that.. sand and polish the blade to a mirror like
finish.. buff it out.. clean and shiny blade has less drag.. tooth offset
ensures that the only contact the blade has with the wood is at point of
contact at the teeth.. no blade drag..

Less drag means less effort.. faster cut.. sharp teeth.. with proper saw
set means each move cuts wood..

If you go professional.. you will set and sharpen the teeth so the saw cuts
on both the push and pull stroke.. maximize the wood removal..

Time is money...
